Th Jackets got the season started out on the right foot. The question now becomes whether they can continue the momentum.

Ed. Note: I'll be releasing this on Monday mornings following each game this season, with the exception of Thursday games when they'll be released on Saturday mornings.

Amazing the difference a year can make.

As Tyler noted in the postgame wrap-up, a year ago at this time, we were collectively having an identity crisis after watching Georgia Tech kick a field goal as time expired to take a 10-9 lead at halftime against...Wofford. If some fans had their way at that point, Paul Johnson wouldn't have even made it back out to the field after halftime -- he'd have been given a one-way ticket to the unemployment line.

Luckily he wasn't, and the rest of 2014 turned out okay.

This year, there are no such demands being made, and the waters are thankfully more clear so far.

Quarterbacks

It was generally a good performance for both Thomas and Byerly, with the exception of two small moments. Thomas made good decisions and didn't get a whole lot of chances to keep the ball (he was consistently forced to pitch), but he made a good read of the defense to scramble on his rushing touchdown and then threw an absolute gem of a pass to Micheal Summers for another score. Byerly performed very well for a couple of quarters of action -- he's a real blessing to this team as the backup quarterback.

Thomas and Coach Johnson talked about one of the moments for improvement in the post game press conference, when Thomas took a long sack after trying to do too much to extend a play. As a second-year starter and a junior, the hope would be that Thomas won't be doing much more of that this season. The other moment was earlier in the game, when Thomas threw a long pass targeting Brad Stewart. It wasn't a good pass and looked a little forced, and Thomas was lucky that the Braves didn't make him pay for it. I was generally pretty impressed with Thomas in the passing game though, I thought he changed up his receivers well and went through his progressions well. He didn't deal with much pressure (thanks to some great blocking), but it's still a good sign moving forward.

Altogether though, it's hard to complain given the offensive output. A strong performance all around.

Grade: A

B-Backs

Anyone who was holding their breath coming into the season over how the B-Back position was going to shake out can now exhale. The one-two punch of Patrick Skov and Marcus Marshall was solid, and generally very promising. Skov is every bit as physical and strong as advertised, and how about the breakaway speed of Marshall? This tandem looks extremely dangerous moving forward. The biggest point of emphasis moving forward will be Marshall improving his ball security, but so far, so good for the true freshman. Marcus Allen also contributed at times and brings some similar athleticism to the position -- hopefully his injury isn't serious enough to keep him out of action for very long.

I want to add here that, after one game against inferior competition, I wouldn't be surprised or disappointed if Marshall were to end up starting at some point over this season Skov. Again, it's early, and we'll have to continue to monitor the situation through the games, but his physicality and burst are almost prototypical for the position.

Grade: A

A-Backs

I was relieved by a lot of what I saw here, too. There were some good blocks made by Clinton Lynch and Isaiah Willis in particular, but the group as a whole was pretty effective in both phases of the game. Broderick Snoddy looks to be back and fully healthy, which is a huge deal for the team moving forward. He had a couple of nice plays, including a long run in the first quarter. I was really impressed by what I saw from TaQuon Marshall and Qua Searcy as well, each of whom had some longer plays on offense (Searcy with an early run and Marshall with a reception a bit later).

To me, the big question is whether the solid blocking we saw against Alcorn State will translate to games against more talented players, like the ones who play for Notre Dame and Florida State. Hopefully this group continues to develop (they weren't perfect), but they're on the right track thus far.

Grade: B+

Wide Receivers

This group saw some pretty limited action in the passing game (the QBs were a combined 4-5 passing, and two of the completions were to A-Backs), but were solid when called upon and blocked fairly well otherwise. Isaiah Willis scored in the first quarter on a rocket toss that was a little tougher than it should have been, primarily because Ricky Jeune struggled a bit to get a block off. There were a few moments like that throughout, but for each of them, there were also moments where guys stood out by delivering a strong block.

Like the A-Backs, this group wasn't perfect and will need to develop some more throughout the season, but they're just fine for now and contributed when asked to.

Grade: B+

Offensive Line

These guys had a strong game, in particular the first string. Shamire Devine was impressive with his ability to play for long stretches of time, where stamina has been a major issue for him to date in his career. Marcus Marshall's long touchdown runs were both heavily aided by the line opening up a clear alley for him to run through, and Justin Thomas was kept safe in the pocket for the most part (with the exception of a cheap shot that drew a flag early). The second string was pretty good too, although they were a bit more of an even match for Alcorn State's starters at times.

Lots of good moments from these guys and very few complaints.

Grade: A

Offense

They set a school record for points scored in a quarter (34 in the first) and could have scored 100 before the Budweiser song if the coaches had really wanted to. After they struggled massively in the first half of last year's Wofford game, this was very refreshing.

Grade: A

Defensive Line

Alright, so here's the thing. A lot of the reviews I've seen thus far (around this site and otherwise) have expressed disappointment with the defensive line. They were expecting catastrophic pass rushing and a complete neutralization of Alcorn State's rushing attack. Instead, they got a decent performance that lacked in producing pressure on passing plays and enabled the Braves to still get 4.3 yards per carry over the course of the game.

That said, I didn't think it was actually that poor of a performance. I think the defense (and the line in particular) was more reserved in its attempts to rush Gibbs because of his mobility, and their desire to make him beat them with his arm. (He finished 8 for 22 for 50 yards and a pick.) Plus, an all-out pass rush with only four players can very easily end with players getting out of their lanes and the quarterback having room to scramble and pick up yards on the ground. Speaking of which, I thought the line was pretty good in the running game, even if the Braves did finish with over 4 YPC. It turns out that they went in to halftime with only 4 first downs, and they got their very first when they were down 41-0. Backups and walk-one may have played a little more of this game than we realize, but know this: Alcorn's first five drives finished like this -- interception, punt, punt, punt, punt -- and they combined to produce 5 net yards. The defensive line will be just fine.

Grade: B+

Linebackers

This group didn't exactly stand out on defense as much, but they had some good moments nonetheless. Paul Davis jumped a snap count and got a shot in on Gibbs early, and both Victor Alexander and Brant Mitchell made some good plays too. the group seemed to struggle a bit to contain the Alcorn State running backs, but it shouldn't really be a big problem in other games. This should be a pretty strong unit, though it should see a lot of rotation of personnel.

Grade: B

Secondary

I thought the secondary had a pretty strong night, Chris Milton and Jamal Golden in particular. Milton had the early interception and did a nice job defending several passes (it was like they told Gibbs, "Find #28, and throw it anywhere else") and Golden was repeatedly stepping up and supporting the run. (Golden only finished with 2 tackles, but it certainly felt like he got involved more than that.) True freshman AJ Gray was pretty phenomenal as well and seemed to be all over the field. Lynn and Corey Griffin co-led the team with 6 tackles apiece, and Lynn added a TFL to boot.

Lots of good stuff here, hope to see this group continue to show off its depth and develop on an individual and group level.

Grade: A

Defense

I'm going to ignore the second half, when the defense seemed to lighten up quite a bit and spent a lot of time playing guys who won't see much of the field the rest of this season. In the first half, though, the defense was everything you could have asked for. Alcorn State was only allowed 71 yards and 4 first downs on 8 possessions before halftime, and they didn't convert a single third down in that period either. When the starters were in the game, you got exactly what you hoped for. No need for concern here.

Grade: A

Special Teams

This was clearly the biggest problem area all night for Georgia Tech. It started poorly when the second extra point was snapped over the head of holder Ryan Rodwell. From there, there were multiple muffed punts and one or two punt returns that should have been fair caught. The good news is that seasoned vet Jamal Golden wasn't making these mistakes -- it was a pair of guys who were playing in their first college game as true freshmen. Get some of the mistakes ironed out, and hopefully this group will be in business. But, only time will tell.

Grade: C

Overall

Again, massive improvement over what happened this time last year, in a similar situation. There was some true freshman talent that was on display throughout the game that was really encouraging to see. The offense seemed to mesh well (pun intended) given the losses it sustained in the offseason and relative youth of the skill position players. The defense did its job and was effective for the most part, especially against an offense that's typically pretty potent.

Lots to like, but we'll learn a whole lot more about this team in the next 3 weeks.

Grade: A

After a long offseason filled with questions and concerns that the Jackets wouldn't be able to replicate their 2014 success, Georgia Tech did exactly what they were supposed to do in the season opener - completely dominate.

Week one - 2014. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets open up the season at home against Wofford with plenty of questions marks surrounding the team.

After a half, Tech leads 10-9.

10-9.

Fans are spotted leaving Bobby Dodd Stadium with plenty of complaints about that high school offense and how pathetic the team was.

Week one - 2015. Coming off of an extremely impressive 2014, the Jackets open up the season with another cupcake at home. The first quarter ends - Georgia Tech leads 34-0.

If that's not enough to explain the enormous strides this team has taken in just a year, I don't know how else to explain it. A team that has a majority of the starters that played in that opener against Wofford a year ago still on the team looked like a completely different unit in the opener against the Alcorn State Braves. The confidence was there, the talent was there, the motivation was there, and the atmosphere was there.

The Georgia Tech team that took the field on Thursday night was one that looked the part of a potential title contender in the coming months. Even compared to recent blowouts by Tech teams that turned out to be very mediocre, this blowout looked different. The first-team starters could've scored 100 in the game and had time left on the clock. True freshman Marcus Marshall could've ran for as many yards as he wanted behind an offensive line that was an absolute force on basically every single play. The first-team defense could've forced more three-and-outs than first downs with plenty of breathing room. It was almost torture watching how easy it looked.

We shouldn't get ahead of ourselves, because big schools are supposed to blowout cupcakes to start the year, but it did look different. And there's a difference between progressively beating down an inferior opponent and scoring five touchdowns in 14 minutes without breaking a sweat.

"I thought our guys got off to a good start," head coach Paul Johnson said. " When the 1's were out there on both sides of the ball, they were playing pretty well. We got ahead and were able to substitute pretty liberally and let everybody play. It was a good way to start the season."

To summarize how good the 1's were, they only played the first quarter really. He finished the game completing three-of-four passes for 54 yards and a touchdown and three carries for two yards and a touchdown. His rushing yardage was hurt by a 19-yard loss on a sack that both he and Paul Johnson called "a boneheaded play." His touchdown pass was a beautiful rope thrown to Micheal Summers in the corner of the end zone that had perfect placement. Thomas' throws looked very sharp in limited action.

When Thomas was asked about those throws being something we maybe didn't see last season, he responded, "I feel like I've always been able to throw the ball pretty well."

After Thomas' big loss on the sack, Marcus Marshall got his first career carry and made it count going for a 49-yard touchdown. Marshall would add another long touchdown run in the third quarter with a 64-yard score to cap off his impressive game. He finished with eight carries for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Marshall was explosive and showed his endless potential in this offense. Paul Johnson was also impressed by his play, but he made sure to mention his one fumble a few times which was Tech's only turnover in the game.

The starter at B-Back held his own as well - creating a bit of a thunder and lightning combination. Patrick Skov carried the ball 12 times in the game for 72 yards and three touchdowns. Like anticipated, Skov ran right at - and right through - defenders on his way to a wonderful debut at his new school. Skov tripled his career yardage at Stanford in the game, and he was very talkative and upbeat in his post game interview.

Skov talked about the unique situation it is to play in his new role, and he described his experience in a unique way as well.

"It was a good atmosphere," Skov said. "I'm enjoying the southern atmosphere here, and hopefully we'll keep the vibes going.

When asked about Justin Thomas, Skov described how he sees him in the offense.

"I love JT, that's my boy. He drives the car, he's what makes the offense goes. I learned quickly how my position feeds off of the quarterback. He's the driver, it's up to him to give or pull, but it's what the defense gives us, and he's gotta kinda be able to dish it out like a point guard, and we all build off of each other."

Once the clock hit zero, the Jackets had built up a 69-6 lead to record an encouraging opening win to the season, but as always, Johnson is keeping everyone level-headed and looking ahead to the next game and the steps needed to take for the Jackets to succeed.

"All in all, it was a good way to start," Johnson said. We've got a lot of improvements to make, and we need to get ready for next week."

Quick Notes:

Broderick Snoddy had three carries early in the game and looked like his old self. He said he is definitely 100%.

Tim Byerly looked very good in his duty at quarterback. He's a true luxury to have as a backup.

Paul Johnson was about as smiley and optimistic as you'll ever see him after a game this early in the year.

Patrick Skov was a fantastic interview. He seems to have a personality that really leads the locker room and creates a positive atmosphere around him at all times.

Among the eight true freshman that saw the field, Marcus Marshall was obviously outstanding, A.J. Gray made some nice plays on special teams early and played well on defense, Vic Alexander was very active defensively and had a nice TFL, and TaQuon Marshall didn't look great in the return game, but he made some great blocks offensively, and a very nice catch-and-run from a pass thrown by Thomas. Those four guys should be the ones we see the most of this season with the addition of Brad Stewart. Stewart and Thomas narrowly missed on a long pass in the first quarter.

Marcus Allen left the game with an ankle injury and didn't return. Johnson didn't seem to think it was serious.

69 points is the second most ever scored by the Jackets in the modern-era.

Tech's 34 first-quarter points is a modern-era school record.

Tech didn't commit a penalty in the game for the second time during Paul Johnson's tenure. The other game came against Syracuse in 2013.

After a long wait, football has finally returned and it was everything we could have hoped for.

Well guys, that was fun. In what turned out to be a serious mismatch, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets completely dismantled the Alcorn State Braves 69-6, after leading 48-0 at the end of half time.

The main thing I want to touch on before I open it up for discussion is what happened at B-back. Coming into the season, people thought there would be some issues, but I think it's safe to say that those were put to rest pretty quickly. Grad student Patrick Skov set the pace after getting the start and finished the game with 12 carries for 72 yards and three touchdowns. The real story, though, was true freshman Marcus Marshall, who finished the game with eight carries for 184 yards and two touchdowns. If these two can keep going like this, it's going to be a fun season.

What stood out to you? What happens from here?

Can you see into the future? We've already determined it.

Weekend selections are back, now being handed out by a higher power.

Greetings, citizens of Earth!

No, relax, I'm not here to announce the arrival of a new world order. That comes later. I have been tasked with something much more pertinent and of interest to you, dear readers of the From the Rumble Seat Georgia Tech blog community. It would appear that college football is something of much import to you, so I am here to bring you a challenge. You like to guess the outcome of college football games. The Duff'd It! Illuminati have already determined the outcomes of those games. Let's see how you stack up against the real rulers of the world.

So, you may ask, what's in it for you? Perhaps a seat on the Illuminati committee? Probably not. The satisfaction that you the best among your peers? Certainly. Is it time to start picking? Yes. Yes it is.

Alcorn State Braves at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

"I ain't a fan of schools that call themselves State," Paul Johnson says at his presser, "You're a school, not a state. I make sure to tell 'em that before I send them packing."

An unfortunate media member interjects: "So, Coach.... what about Middle Tennessee State?"

Paul Johnson looks down at his podium and presses a button. Electric currents course through the unfortunate media member's chair, killing him.

"Any other questions?"

Illuminati pick: BRUH.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. South Carolina Gamecocks (-3)

The ultimate Carolina showdown. Winner gets to call themselves the True Carolina. Loser has to rename themselves East Dakota. Win or lose, you can expect the hatin'-assest hatin'-ass Spurrier post game.

Illuminati pick: North Carolina Wins.

#2 TCU Horned Frogs (-16.5) at Minnesota Golden Gophers

TCU just barely missed out on the playoff last year. This year, they're out for blood. Their opponents' blood, I mean. Not the blood horned frogs shoot out of their own eyes. That'd be weird. Why would they be after their own blood? Why the hell are you so curious about blood?

Illuminati pick: TCU wins but does not cover.

Michigan Wolverines at Utah Utes (-5)

Jim Harbaugh's Khaki Army vs. the LDS Church and their devoted dark slack wearers. THIS CALLS FOR A SLACK-OFF!

(No, the University of Utah is not officially affiliated with the LDS Church, being a public institution. Yes, there is still a large LDS contingent, because this is Utah.)

Illuminati pick: Utah covers.

Washington Huskies at #23 Boise State Broncos (-12)

Chris Petersen thought he had left Boise for good. He'd left the program he built for a posh new gig in Seattle. But he was wrong. You never leave Boise. Not until it's done with you.

Illuminati pick: Boise State covers.

Louisville Cardinals vs. #6 Auburn Tigers (-10.5)

Bobby Petrino is having the second worst weekend of his life. He's back in Atlanta, a city that forever hates him, coaching in the home stadium of the NFL team he abandoned. Now, here he is, having increased his win total at the Georgia Dome by 50%, gleefully knowing just how much his army of haters has grown.

Bobby Petrino his having the second best weekend of his life.

Illuminati pick: Louisville wins, Auburn is not #blessed enough.

Virginia Cavaliers at #13 UCLA Bruins (-19.5)

Virginia's non-con schedule the last three years includes (among others): BYU, UCLA, Oregon, Boise State. It's like sending your weakest soldier out to take down that huge castle. Bless his heart.

Illuminati pick: UCLA wins but does not cover but oh gods there is so much Cavalier blood everywhere

#15 Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Texas A&M Aggies (-3.5)

Texas A&M is favored over Arizona State even though the Sun Devils are ranked and the Aggies ain't. You know why that is, of course. It's that #SECWest swagger. The Aggies are from God's own division.

Devils don't care about which division is God's, sun or not.

Illuminati pick: Arizona State wins.

#20 Wisconsin Badgers vs. #3 Alabama Crimson Tide (-10.5)

The cold, ruthless Alabama machine vs. the school too cold and drunk to feel. Unfortunately for Wisconsin fans, the only craft beer recognized in AT&T Stadium is Dr Pepper.

Illuminati pick: Alabama covers.

#1 Ohio State Buckeyes (-11.5) at Virginia Tech Hokies

The defending national champions find themselves in the home of the only ones to beat them last year. But that was a long time ago. The Buckeyes have done some soul searching. They needed time to find themselves. What they found is they have multiple qualified quarterbacks and the best damn team in the land. The Hokies found something else.

Illuminati pick: Ohio State covers #goacc
