Nealy was forced to share the honor with Florida State's Telvin Smith, but that doesn't diminish the fact that he played an awesome game! Congrats, Quay!

CO-LINEBACKER – Quayshawn Nealy, Georgia Tech, Jr.-R, LB, 6-1, 232, Lakeland, Fla.

Nealy had an interception, a fumble recovery and a pass break-up as Georgia Tech blanked Syracuse, 56-0, allowing just 208 total yards. Nealy had a pair of tackles and was instrumental in the Yellow Jackets recording a second shutout in the same season for the first time since 1985.

Observations

Man we needed that. What a huge win to re-orient the ship, this team needed some positive energy.

Our average starting field position was at our own 40 yard line, that is huge. Compare that to Syracuse's average starting spot of the 22 which results in 216 "hidden yards" accumulated throughout the game for GT. That is an enormous advantage that is tough to overcome, especially with how well we were playing.

We did a great job running the ball, and passing the ball for that matter, I mean, helluva job by everyone this game. Advanced Box Scores are great when literally every facet I look at is better than average.

And its something I don't cover in this (I need to though) but the fact that we had ZERO penalties is just awesome. The team clearly had it's head in the right place.

Check it out!

It was a great win on Saturday for Georgia Tech. To recap, here's a quick compilation of some videos based on the game, from Paul Johnson's midweek press conference all the way through the postgame interviews. Enjoy! Mailbag answers will be posted later today.

I'd venture to say that things didn't really go how we expected them to against Syracuse, but I'd also venture to say that nobody here is upset about that.

Over/Under 1.5 Interceptions for Georgia Tech's Defense

Actual Number: 2

Georgia Tech's defense was able to manufacture two interceptions as well as a fumble recovery, and won the turnover battle 3-1. Syracuse was intercepted on its third drive of the game by Quayshawn Nealy, who read the eyes of Terrel Hunt as he stared down a receiver. Nealy jumped the route and was able to secure the ball on his way to the ground after a slight juggle. Later, Louis Young was able to pick off backup quarterback Drew Allen on a play where Allen overthrew his receiver. Both were instances where players were given a shot to capitalize on a mistake and didn't miss the chance.

Optimism 1, Pessimism 0

Over/Under 18.5 Pass Attempts for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: 5

The correlation holds, as Georgia Tech won without having to pass much at all. However, it was good to see that when they did pass, they were efficient about it -- Vad Lee went 3/3 for 88 yards and a touchdown, including two beautiful deep passes to Darren Waller and Dennis Andrews. That's exactly what we need from our passing game moving forward.

Optimism 2, Pessimism 0

Over/Under 4.5 Yards per Carry for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: 5.88 yards per carry

Everything just worked on Saturday. The B-Back dive was gashing for big yards, the pitch man was frequently able to get a big gain, and the QB keeper was effective as well. It was really beautiful, and this is what we see when everything's running smoothly as it was.

Optimism 3, Pessimism 0

Over/Under 54.5 Combined Points for Georgia Tech and Syracuse

Actual Number: 56

A quick refresher from the "picks" article...

...If Georgia Tech wins 49-0, then the outcome is "Under" (49 + 0 = 49 < 54.5), while a 28-27 Georgia Tech victory yields an outcome of "Over" (28 + 27 = 55 > 54.5).

You know, I made up that first scenario as a bit of a joke and an extreme case, just to illustrate how things could potentially happen. Turns out our guys did one touchdown better than my "wild" scenario. I personally thought it a bit strange that Syracuse's defense was so helpless out there, given that they were the more hyped unit coming into the game.

Optimism 4, Pessimism 0

Over/Under 0.5 Passing Touchdowns for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: 1

When <strike>RHP</strike> WR DeAndre Smelter threw an interception on a trick play early in the game, I just knew that we wouldn't really be throwing the ball for the rest of the game. And we didn't -- there were only 4 attempts after that play. Luckily for this line though, one was a deep pass to Darren Waller that was caught inside the 5 and he was able walk in for a score, becoming Georgia Tech's first touchdown in meaningful time since our game against UNC.

Optimism 5, Pessimism 0

Over/Under 7.5 Point Margin of Victory for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: 56

Gotta love it when your team beats a conference opponent by 8 touchdowns and shuts them out in the process. Boy, did it feel good, and boy, was it a much-needed performance for our fans.

Optimism 6, Pessimism 0

Weekly Shout-Outs

First shout-out here goes to me, for making lines that forced 2 incorrect picks from Dive Keep and Pitch and pulindian.

Second weekly should-out here goes to AugustaJacket, Buddy Smiggins, and richman0610, who went a solid 5-1 this week. AugustaJacket and richman0610 missed on the interceptions line, and Buddy Smiggins missed on the combined points line. I'll try to do better next time.

Our next weekly shout-out goes out to Atlanta's original team, whose pessimism was the only thing keeping me from being the weekly LVP. Appreciate that!

We also have a shout-out today for dhbartlett, who couldn't have been more wrong when he said...

"Under- 8 TD? I don’t imagine" - dhbartlett

Interesting anti-prophecy there though.

Final shout-out of the week goes to ClavinCliff, who called his shot when he said...

It was a phenomenal game for the Yellow Jackets, who have restored some faith in the fanbase following a dominating performance against conference newcomer Syracuse.

Alright, everybody at once now.

Breathe in....breathe out....

One more time.

Breathe in....breathe out....

That was cool. I felt uneasy picking Georgia Tech to cover a 7.5-point spread. Turns out I should have picked them to cover a 50-point spread.

Those guys came out today and showed zero regard for how good Syracuse is or even might be. They came out with the mentality that they were better, and that they knew it and weren't going to be convinced otherwise.

The entire game, Georgia Tech was intent on shoving the ball right down the throats of Syracuse, and there was nothing the Orange could do to stop it. It was beautiful. People complain about the spread option that we run being boring, but that's the kind of game that really makes you appreciate it in all of its glory. The option that we ran was nearly unstoppable, and if we're being honest, it felt fantastic to watch my team put the opponent on the ropes from the get-go and just never take its foot off the gas. Tech came out and straight-up whipped Syracuse today, and honestly, they earned that.

Let's not get crazy. Tech wasn't perfect today. I was watching the game with Sean Bedford (yes, that Sean Bedford), and he was continually commenting on how Vad Lee and Justin Thomas would run the option in a way that they stretched out the play as far as possible, making it nearly to the sidelines, before pitching the ball... It worked, but the issue is that it doesn't really work against a quicker, better-trained defense, and that they've got to do better fundamentally if they don't want to be destroyed by defenses down the road (Pittsburgh, Clemson, and uga in particular).

A lot of other things went wrong too. DeAndre Smelter threw a terrible pass in the first quarter -- I liked the creativity, but the execution was abominable. (For what it's worth, he could've had 15 yards if he'd just tucked and ran the ball.) There was the occasional tackling issue, and there was almost a huge special teams miscue following a blocked punt. In the end though, it was fantastic in general.

I'm satisfied with what I saw today. If we can do that against Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Alabama A&M, questions will be more along the lines of "can we upset Clemson or uga?" and less along the lines of "can we make a bowl game?" Hopefully you liked what you saw too.

What are your thoughts on today's game, Tech fans? Are you relieved? Are you still stressed? Are you still a bit pessimistic?
