Just when you thought the bloodbath was over, it's about to get a little worse.

Over/Under 8.5 Pass Completions for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: 7 Completions

This was the second-worst line collectively, with only 23% hitting on it. There's really not a good reason for that either -- Vad Lee threw 24 passes, of which there's no reason he couldn't have completed 9. Well, except that he was having a rough game, as was the O-Line in front of him.

Over/Under 300 Yards Rushing for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: 129 Rushing Yards

Not only did Georgia Tech go under 300 yards, they went wayyyy under 300 yards. As in, didn't even make it halfway there. Again, it was an ugly game for blockers, and a magnificent game for Bud Foster and his crew. Disappointing no doubt, but it is what it is.

Over/Under 55% Passing for Logan Thomas

Actual Number: 76%

Yeah, this is where I start questioning how good I am at making lines versus how weird of a game this was. Logan Thomas had 26 attempts against Alabama and only completed 5. He had 25 attempts against us and only missed on 6. Is this dude a wizard? Interesting too because this number was so stupidly above the line, and yet only 2 folks picked it right for a 9% success rate. It's too bad I'm not an actual bookie, because I would have made a boatload of money off of that one.

Over/Under 1.5 Turnovers for Georgia Tech's Offense

Actual Number: 3* Turnovers

I put an asterisk there because we can't be certain that Georgia Tech actually turned the ball over thrice. Yes, there was the fumble on Tech's first drive that led to a 2-play Hokie touchdown drive, and yes, the final drive ended with an interception, but then there was the other one. The second drive of the game saw Brandon Facyson (if you recognize that name, it's because we recruited him hard last year) intercept a Vad Lee pass on what neither I nor the refs can decide was a great play or a combination of showmanship and poor camera angles. In any case, it went in the books as the second turnover of the night for Georgia Tech. It was a devastating one too -- this was the second most successful drive of the night yards-wise.

Over/Under 165 Rushing Yards for Virginia Tech's Offense

Actual Number: 59 Rushing Yards

This is one spot of pride for the Yellow Jackets in this game. The Hokies weren't able to get anything going on the ground, rushing 25 times for 59 yards, an average of under 2.5 yards per carry. Their only real offensive success came through the air, even though that wasn't wildly successful either. The Georgia Tech offense was pretty awful Thursday. The same cannot be said about the Georgia Tech defense -- they're looking like a big-time unit so far this year.

Over/Under 7.5 Point Margin of Victory for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: -7 Point Margin of Victory

Again, I'm not sure, but I'm thinking that this game was just wildly against everyone's expectations. Sure, we're all confident in our own team, but it's telling when a lot of Hokie fans were picking our team too. It was a rough game, and we just have to move on.

Weekly Shout-Outs

We have a new leader! pulindian broke a tie with Dive Keep and Pitch with his 5-1 performance, and now has a 3-pick lead over DKP, packerman, and richman0610. His record of 21-3 is something I consider a challenge, and one that I probably will not win.

Congrats to packerman for his perfect 6-0 picks of this week, although I think you'll agree he said it best.

Being right has never felt worse.

-packerman, Sept 26 11:10pm

This week's LVPs are jabbajacket & The_GT_LineageX11, who each went 1-5. Make no mistake though, they both still have 10 correct picks on the season, though The_GT_LineageX11 holds the tiebreaker with a 50% success rate.

Finally, I want to point out kizzak, who was the only picker outside of packerman to correctly pick Logan Thomas to go over 55% passing. What do you know that we don't?

Presenting the results of this week's charting project

This year I am taking part in Football Study Hall's Game Charting Project where each week I take a closer look at Georgia Tech's game film, charting how many rushers and blockers there are on pass plays, how far a pass travels in the air, and many more little tidbits. Here are the results of that charting. You can view all of this year's game charting in the Advanced Stats and Analysis Story Stream.

This one was tough. On one hand, we had a million and a half mental mistakes in a huge game against a conference rival. On the other hand, we were one or two plays away from actually winning the game. I'm going to try and save my opinions after watching the game until the end, so here are a couple of observations from watching the game.

Defense

Logan Thomas

The dude has talent, no doubt, but man is he inconsistent. After starting the game on fire Logan just shut off and couldn't complete a pass:

Quarter

Completed Pass / Incompletions

Yards / Passing Play

1

6 / 0

13.67

2

5 / 3

8.375

3

5 / 2

3.86

4

3 / 3

7.5

Alright it looked a lot worse while watching the game. But still, the defense did a good job of limiting the passing plays after the first two drives. When Logan Thomas ran the ball though, it was another story.

Runner

2.00

1

And here is the breakdown from Logan's runs. Every single carry was up the middle. Every.Single.One.

Run Type

Yards / Run

# of Carries

3

Scramble

2.5

2

I'm not saying this is bad, but damnit this was all they did!! It's so frustrating to see Logan Thomas get 3, 4, 5 yards at a time running the zone read. AND THESE WERE ALL UP THE MIDDLE. Gah. Whatever, our run defense did a great job limiting everyone else, I'm shocked at how well they played.

Tackling in the Secondary

It sucked. Virginia Tech's receivers averaged 5.1 yards after the catch. And its not like they were being hit in stride on posts and slants where they could run with the ball easily. These were missed tackles all over the place. Our defensive backs have missed tackles all year and this week was the worst I have seen so far this season. They did a great job coming up on running plays when our front seven wasn't swallowing everything up, but man we missed way too many tackles on short passes and allowed the receivers to get yards after the catch.

That was pretty much it on defense, we played kind of awesome. I think this was one of the most impressive defensive performances we have seen in a long time by our defense. AM I MORE CONFIDENT ABOUT THE DEFENSE THAN THE OFFENSE?? WHAT IS THIS I DONT EVEN.

Offense

Run Blocking

It wasn't good. Our offense does not work when the defensive line gets penetration on backside scoop blocks. Go watch the 3rd down play in the fourth quarter before we went for it on fourth down. The backside guard gets beat to the point of the attack and the backside defensive tackle is able to trip up David Sims before he gets running. This can't happen if we are going to sustain drives and make plays on offense.

Our playside blocking wasn't anything to brag about either. I head a lot of talks about Vad missing reads and not making the right decision. Well it is tough to read the defensive end when the line isn't blocking well enough to stop the linebacker and defensive tackle from getting to Vad before he even reads the pitch man. It is not a bad read when David Sims gets tackled by 2 defenders at the line of scrimmage and Vad also gets hit; he read the right guy but there was no hole there. Virginia Tech's defense is great and fast, and our line is not good enough to block a team like this that is flying around. That is pretty much what it comes down to, our offensive line can't block defensive lines that are this fast. It happens, we just need to do a better job of doing something about it.

Passing Game

Vad consistently had pressure in his face and could not step in to throws to make them accurately. Vad is a good passer but he needs time and space to set his feet and throw the ball accurately. Virginia Tech brought a ton of pressure this week, bringing 5 rushers 13 times and 6 rushers 9 times while only bringing 4 rushers 4 times. Our line, and Vad, was unprepared to handle this amount of blitzes. And they weren't complicated zone blitzes meant to confuse Vad, they simply wanted to put pressure in his face and got it just about every time. This has got to get better

Formations

We only ran 5 formations this week:

I'm not sure why we didn't see the full house more often, but its not like we needed more diversity. The plays were there, we just didn't execute. Thats what this game came down to, we just did not play up to our potential and didn't do the little things necessary to win. Vad really didn't make many bad reads, we just didn't block well enough at all.

Turnovers and Penalties

Am I the only one who couldn't believe they upheld the "interception" in the first quarter? In what game is that called a pick? The defender got one hand on the side of the ball, I honestly can't believe they called that and then upheld it. Using Brian Fremau's Game Splits tool we can analyze the effect of each facet of the game on the final scoring margin. In this game Georgia Tech lost 8.4 points due to turnovers; we only lost by 7. Take away the stupid stupid penalties and turnovers and this game turns out much better for Georgia Tech. You obviously can't take those away, however it is just frustrating to have something so silly play such a big deal.

Observations:

Virginia Tech's Offense was bipolar on Thursday. A 13% success rate on passing downs vs. a 47% success rate on standard downs would imply that they couldn't pass the ball very well. But then when you look at their play type breakdown they had a 16% success rate on running plays and a 56% success rate on passing plays. I had to look further into this so here is a table breaking down the performance by play type AND down type.

So there it is. We could not stop their passing game when they had a threat of the run. 10+ yards per play on passes on standard downs seems rather ridiculous (the national average is about 6.5 yards per pass on standard downs). But then we absolutely killed them when they tried to pass the ball on Passing Downs, I don't think I need to put any frame of reference on only allowing .88 yards per pass on passing downs.

Man our offense could not get anything going on early downs. Our standard down success rate was only 36%, so we weren't setting our offense up for easy drives, and our 1st down yards per play was atrocious. Our average distance to go on 2nd and especially 3rd downs was actually better than Virginia Tech's. And we weren't making many big plays either, and had 0 explosive drives (10+ yards per play on average). As bad as our offense was performing our defense was doing their part to keep us in the game. The defense did an incredible job of limiting VT's scoring to give us a shot.

I think the Drive data in the bottom right of the table pretty much sums up why we lost. 3 turnovers just won't cut it against tough opponents, we only gained about a third of the possible yards available to us, in the past we are at 50-60% of possible yards, and VT had a 133 yard advantage in field position (the "hidden yards" field). We did just enough wrong to lose this game. We didn't play any worse than Virginia Tech did, but we just had too many mistakes to overcome. If we eliminate our mistakes then I think there is a different tone this week, our performance wasn't so bad, just unfortunate to get a loss.

It's time for me to eat some words. This isn't going to be fun.

Over the past few weeks, I've guaranteed a very large number of people that we would come away from this game with a win. How could we not? Thursday night at home, whiteout, major celebration at hand, Virginia Tech's been unimpressive at best so far this year...what could go wrong?

A lot, apparently. I was dead wrong about this game.

Let's start with the good. The defense played a solid game, I thought. Of Virginia Tech's 17 points, I really thought they only earned 7 of them. They had a great 91 yard touchdown drive early on in the first quarter, but that came after a 2-play, 27 yard touchdown drive, and preceded an 8-play, 26 yard drive that resulted in a field goal. Three scoring drives. One of them was the Hokies really earning it. The rest of the night, Tech's defense was very stout. Of Virginia Tech's 11 drives, 8 of them ended after 5 plays or less, with 7 of those yielding no points. They gave up a lot of yards, especially though the air, but really are developing a good "bend, not break" attitude. I'm excited about them going forward.

I wish I didn't have to talk about everything else.

The offense was out of sync the entire game. There never came a point where they were just firing on all cylinders. Of their 11 drives, only 4 went more than 5 plays. They turned it over on each of their first two drives, once deep in their own territory, and the other bringing a halt to a drive that was going well (9 plays, 51 yards). Vad Lee was not good passing, going 7/24 for 144 yards and 2 INTs. The protection wasn't particularly good, but Vad missed quite a few open receivers and threw some poorly placed balls in general.

I thought he wasn't helped much by the play calling. I understand trying to establish the option game, and I think doing so pays big dividends over the course of a game, but I hate the idea of trying it, failing at it, trying at it some more, failing at it some more, and then refusing to just let it go and change the strategy. Part of this, to me at least, is the formations we were lining up in. If you're passing from under center, you're at least trying to create the illusion that you might run. Problem is, when you're down 7 with under 10 minutes to go and you've barely broken 100 yards rushing, why would you continue to try and make anyone think you can run the ball effectively. I'd much rather put Vad in the pistol, where he's much more comfortable, line up 4 wide and start the play ready to pass.

Oh, and let's not forget the penalties. Coach Johnson was clearly trying to change the rhythm of the snap count early on, which was a clever wrinkle, but had it backfire when the players were clearly uncomfortable with the concept and couldn't stay still for long enough. There were a ton of false starts, far too many for a team playing at home. It also looked like we were running a lot of plays from the base set, but with both receivers to one side, where the A-Back on that side moves up to be on the line (because of formation rules). That led to some pretty constant confusion as well, and created a penalty on Tech's last drive when Robert Godhigh was trying to get on the line at the moment that the ball was snapped (good for an illegal motion penalty -- declined because Vad sailed a ball over an open Darren Waller). Tech committed 9 penalties for 66 yards as a team, and the only one that wasn't majorly preventable was a pass interference called against Louis Young.

I want to give credit to Virginia Tech. They played an extremely clean game offensively, offering up no opportunities for Georgia Tech's defense to turn the momentum in their own favor. The Hokies' offense wasn't phenomenal, but they were good enough, and most importantly they didn't lose the game.

Georgia Tech took this game, put it on a silver platter, offered it to the Hokies, and Virginia Tech took it. This falls somewhere between "Georgia Tech got beat" and "Georgia Tech downright lost", but I think that Virginia Tech did way too much well for it to be completely the latter.

Luckily we get a few extra days to process here, because it might end up being a very rough trip to Coral Gables next weekend.

Thoughts, Tech fans? Who's at fault? Did VPI win, or did Tech lose?

Here are some numbers from Georgia Tech's loss to Virginia Tech. Some are encouraging, others very alarming.

The Virginia Tech defense is everything its hyped up to be.

Bud Foster's crew shut down Georgia Tech and held the Yellow Jackets to only 129 yards rushing. The Hokies also made plays through the air as Logan Thomas completed 19-25 passes for a total of 221 yards. The Hokies were in control throughout the game and held on to win with a final of 17-10. Georgia Tech now has to regroup and get ready for a good Miami team next Saturday.

The Yellow Jackets are now (3-1) on the season and (2-1) in the conference.

Stats that make you feel blah:

Third down efficiency: 5-14

Fourth down efficiency: 0-3

Rushing yards: 129 (Yikes!)

Total yards: 273

Penalties: 9-66 yards

Turnovers: 3 (1 Fumble and 2 Picks)

Could not block: Derrick Hopkins (6'0", 311lbs) Virginia Tech Senior Defensive Tackle

Mr. Consistent: DeAndre Smelter - three catches for 76 yards

Came to play: Logan Thomas- 19-25 passes and 221 yards passing with one touchdown.

The Yellow Jackets are off to a slow start as Vad Lee and company can't seem to get anything going. Virginia Tech has had no problem moving the football as they have scored twice and are now up 14-3 at the half. The Yellow Jackets started off slow last week but pulled themselves together and played good football and won against North Carolina. Hopefully they can do the same tonight!

What some would call Georgia Tech's biggest conference game of the year has arrived, and you'd better believe that Bobby Dodd Stadium will be one giant party tonight.

Every year, we look forward to playing the Virginia Tech Hokies, and each of the last three years we've come up empty. Not this year. This year is different. Georgia Tech isn't yet firing on all cylinders offensively, and yet has scored 70, 35, and 28 points in its three games this year, respectively. The defense is under new management and showing a new attitude, putting them in the top 15 nationally in a number of categories. The special teams aspects are fully functioning for the first time in years. On the other sideline, there's a team that has trouble scoring and is ripe for a downright thumping. Three years ago they ruined Josh Nesbitt, two years ago they ruined the reputation of Jeremiah Attaochu, and last year they ruined us as fans. Newsflash: this year we ruin them. It's time for them to pay the piper for all of the misery they've caused us these past 3 years. Frank Beamer is one of the least favorite coaches in our fanbase (putting it lightly), and our team and coaching staff cannot WAIT to stick it to him tonight.
