Taking a deeper look at last week's game

This year I am taking part in Football Study Hall's game charting project. Each week a number of us chart select games around the country to take an in depth look at each play in a game to track certain factors. For instance on passing plays we look at the number of blockers, number of rushers, the depth of each throw, and many other items. Here are some of my observations after watching the film.

The Formations

Against UNC we added a few new formations, but generally stuck to the "vanilla" flexbone look that is the staple of the offense.

Formation

Number of plays run

Flexbone

46

Flexbone - Tight

14

Flexbone - 3 WR

6

Flexbone - Twins

6

Full House (Diamond)

5

Flexbone - 1 WR, 1 Extra OL

4

Flexbone - Pistol

3

UNC saw a heavy dose of the standard flexbone formation, but they also saw a few new looks in a 3 WR formation, 2 split out to one side and 1 to the other (although one of these WR's was actually an A-back.) We also ran some goal line or short yardage formation with the one of the standard personnel WR's swapped out for an extra offensive lineman. We did not run much pistol/full house this game, 8 snaps combined. I think the weather may have had a pretty large influence on this.

Formation

Flexbone - Pistol

0 / 3

NA / 5.3

I think the trend we see here is that the game was played in bad weather. Last week, against Duke, GT ran the ball 80% of the time, even though we were ahead for a majority of the game. This week, against UNC, despite trailing for a substantial portion of the game, 85% of the plays were running plays.

The production we get in the running game in the tight flexbone formation is really starting to interest me. Against Duke, we got 6.0 yards per running play out of this formation, this week we see a 7.3 yards per run play. If we combine both games' numbers, we see a 6.9 yard per run play out of this formation. From my unscientific eye/memory test, I think we actually run wide a lot out of this formation, and the tight set of the wide receivers and the blocking running back allows us to seal the second level of the defense to the inside to spring the ball carrier. When we run the standard triple option play out of the unadjusted flexbone, the WR seals to the outside while the A back seals to the inside, leaving chance for the ball carrier to misread a block or cut. Perhaps simplifying this scheme by sealing everyone in one direction is helping out our ball carriers.

Defense

The obvious observation everyone made was the shutdown by the defense in the second half. The spark for this, in my opinion was the incredible work done by Jeremiah Attaochu on the first drive of the second half. UNC threw a skinny post for an 82 yard TD that was called back for an obvious holding call on the RT for grabbing Jerry's shoulder as he sped right by. After a 10 yard pickup on a draw play, it was 3rd and 4. Attaochu switched sides to attack the LT, and this time used a combination of speed and power to beat his blocker for a sack. You could see the way this fired up the rest of the defense for the rest of the half and demonstrates that he is the undoubted leader of this unit.

On the negative side, we got burnt down the seam/hash for much of the game by the UNC offense. On the hopeful side, our late interception came on a play in this area of the field.

Quick Hits

Waller and Smelter are really coming along, I think. Look for CPJ to attack the outside with the traditional VT defense setting their corners up to play 1v1.

Lots of dives. They were mostly successful, too. It was good to see Vad not get bored handing it off and instead just continuing to just take whatever the defense was offering.

Some of the running around the edges was disjointed both by poor outside blocking and some guys not using their blockers correctly. There were a couple of plays where the ball carrier would get too close to their blocker, allowing the defender to come off and make the tackle or set the block up wrong to allow the defender to come free. Hopefully the guys were able to take a look at this during the week and can correct it for the Poly game.

It's Mason's second straight week winning the honor.

For the second time in his career, and the second straight week, Georgia Tech's junior OG Shaquille Mason has been named the ACC's Offensive Lineman of the Week. Mason did a phenomenal job on Saturday playing against a very stout UNC defensive front. Vad Lee was sacked twice on Saturday, the first two times that's happened this season, but upon a review of film, both plays saw Mason take his man completely out of the play with some great pass blocking strength and footwork.

Mason hasn't gotten a lot of playing time in his first two years at Tech, always being stuck behind the likes of Omoregie Uzzi and Will Jackson. When he's gotten the chance though, Mason has made the most of it. Many folks would actually say that Mason is the most talented offensive lineman at Tech (although Mason would tell you that honor belongs to yet-untested Shamire Devine).

Congrats to Shaq, and here's to hoping he can reel off a few more awesome performances!

Looking deeper into the stats of Saturday's win.

Well lets not mess around on a short week, here is the advanced box score from this week. No new additions from last week, which is unfortunate because penalties and special teams played such a huge part in this game, but I'm working on it. If you are confused by anything then please read the description in this post to give you an idea of what this covers.

Observations

This box score doesn't really explain how we won this game haha. We did a great job of limiting UNC's success on passing downs (UNC's offense is better than average so holding them to average is a good performance). We ran a hell of a lot more plays than UNC did, wow. I think we just controlled the ball so much they couldn't get anything going. 40% of our drives were Methodical (10 plays or more on a drive) and look at the number of play differential in the 3rd and 4th quarters. UNC just never had the ball enough to score.

I could have sworn Georgia Tech was going to have a field position advantage in this game, but UNC's average starting spot was actually 3 yards better than ours. Both were bad though, our ability to flip the field played a huge part in keeping UNC from moving the entire length of the field.

I have no idea what half time adjustments were made by the defense, but they were awesome. Going from allowing 7.3 yards per play in the 2nd quarter to 2.7?!? That's huge.

Our 1st down offense could use some work but man we played lights out on 2nd/3rd/4th downs.

This week was filled with redemption and overall good scores! I'll try harder next time...

Over/Under 3.5 Vad Lee Touchdowns

Actual Number: 2 (1 Passing, 1 Rushing)

Lee had 5 touchdowns last week against Duke, but was toned down to 2 touchdowns against UNC. David Sims had two TD's on the ground, and the relatively low score of 28 points meant there wasn't a whole lot of scoring to go around. That won't be a common trend over the course of the year, though.

Over/Under 0.5 100-Yard Rushers for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: 1 (Robert Godhigh, 100 Yards on 9 carries)

It took a 48-yard carry to get him in range, but Godhigh was able to be Georgia Tech's first 100-yard rusher since Vad Lee did it last year against UNC. The Tar Heels have traditionally struggled with Paul Johnson's offense, so it's not surprising that this was the game to break out of the slump. We'll see how many more games involve a Tech ballcarrier hitting the century mark this year.

Over/Under 0.5 Touchdowns for Broderick Snoddy

Actual Number: 0

After a performance against Duke that saw Snoddy go for 29 yards on only 3 carries and fit into his role in the offense better than he ever has yet, I (among others) had high hopes for Snoddy against UNC. However, those hopes weren't realized. Not only did Snoddy not score a touchdown on Saturday, but he didn't even record a touch via carry or catch.

Over/Under +0.5 Turnover Margin for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: 0 (1 takeaway, 1 giveaway)

After the Sun Bowl and Elon were filled with Georgia Tech scoring turnovers (3 INTs in each game), the past two games have resulted in a grand total of one takeaway, that coming in the form of a Louis Young interception in the fourth quarter on Saturday. It's been a strange drought of turnovers for Tech, a continued lack of which will hurt when playing teams like Miami and BYU where offense will be more of a struggle.

Over/Under 2.5 Sacks for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: 1 (Jeremiah Attaochu)

This result is only partially negative, as Attaochu would have had another sack or two if UNC's offensive line weren't forced to hold him on occasion. Also consider that UNC threw a lot of quick passes, keeping Tech's defensive front from having an opportunity to rush the passer. The other side of this coin is that the rest of Tech's defensive line had limited opportunities to get after Renner, which they were unable to take advantage of. This would seem to be an issue that isn't getting better by the week.

Over/Under +3.5 Point Margin of Victory for Georgia Tech

Actual Number: +8

Not sure if we're all really good at picking against the spread, or if we're really cocky about a team that's pretty good at covering the spread. In any case, this is our second straight week of all voting members being correct about GT covering.

Weekly Shout-Outs: Congrats to user pulindian, who went a perfect 6-0 this week! His week put him into a tie with Dive Keep and Pitch for the season lead at a whopping 16-2 (88.9%)! Another shout-out goes to users 4Natlchamps, JohnHeisman, and mrnuttle, who were our only sub-.500 users this week. If the three of you need inspiration, just look to PeterInVA -- last week's LVP at 2-4 who made a jump this week to 5-1! PeterInVA is this week's most improved!

Georgia Tech's win over UNC was a weird one, a hard-fought one, and each unit performed a little differently than others...

Quarterbacks: B+

It was a difficult day for Vad Lee passing. Between the poor weather conditions and the lack of protection at times against a violent UNC pass rush, he didn't have a very easy time. That said, he still managed 7/12 passing for 104 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. Then consider that he carried 24 times, but for only 55 yards, but that he was able to add a touchdown, except that he lost a fumble, and that he made a lot of good reads on the afternoon. I'm conflicted but fairly satisfied. It wasn't a dominating effort, but it was solid.

I also need to mention that Justin Thomas came into the game in multiple situations (when Vad had his helmet taken off, and another time when he got banged up), and it was Thomas who was the QB for David Sims' touchdown early on. He played phenomenally in the role that he was put in. He bumps up Vad's B to a group B+.

B-Backs: B+

For the second time in four games, David Sims came within 3 feet of having 100 yards rushing, finishing with 17 carries for 99 yards (a whopping 5.8 ypc) and a TD. It was great getting to see him established within the offense after a struggle to do so early on.

Zach Laskey had a tough time today, with only 7 carries for 18 yards (2.6 ypc). I can't say there was much rhyme or reason as to his struggles, but I know that he also dropped a pass on a screen play where he had an opportunity to shine a bit.

Combine the two of them and they were pretty good, especially Sims towards the end. These guys get a B+ as well.

A-Backs: B

First, we have to mention Robert Godhigh. He became Tech's first 100-yard rusher this season, and the first for the Jackets since Vad went for over 100 in Chapel Hill last year. He got almost half of his yards on a 48-yard carry, and was in position for another huge run before he was brought down from behind just as he started to break it. It was overall a solid performance today from Robbie, something we've gotten used to.

Charles Perkins had his best career game since Duke in 2011, rushing for 26 yards -- all of it on a single carry on a good decision by Vad to pitch. Call me a fanboy, but the kid has struggled since arriving on campus and I was happy to see him get out on the outside and go for a big gain.

Tony Zenon might be the MVP outside of Godhigh in this position group. He only had 10 yards on 3 carries, but he made a catch for 6 yards, stepped in to return punts after Jamal Golden had to leave the game, and did a fairly good job blocking for his teammates. Nothing too flashy, but Zenon played a good game.

Synjyn Days went for 8 yards on 3 carries, Dennis Andrews got 5 yards on his only carry, and B.J. Bostic got 4 yards in as many carries with a catch for 7 more yards.

The perimeter blocking wasn't particularly good today, but this group performed admirably and took advantage of the opportunities they got. I'll give them a B.

Wide Receivers: A

All I'm going to say here is that DeAndre Smelter is going to be a big-time player for us this year. His skills and instincts are incredible for someone who's been away from the game for so long. Combine that with Darren Waller coming up with clutch catches when he had the opportunities, and I'm not worried about this pair a bit.

Offensive Line: C

FINAL SCORE: Yellow Jackets 28, Tar Heels 20

For more on Georgia Tech's win over North Carolina, check out the postgame wrapup.

These guys had a rough game, there's no two ways about it. It seemed like any time Vad wanted to pass, he was making decisions a lot quicker than he wanted to, and it took a while to get the B-Back established. They hung in there though, and by the end of the game there were running lanes galore as the Jackets looked to put the game to bed. It was an OK performance here, but they'll have something to prove against a talented Virginia Tech defense on Thursday.

Defensive Line: C

Of these guys, only Euclid Cummings and Jeremiah Attaochu had more than one tackle. However, Jerry added his first sack of the season on a great play. Overall there was a lack of pass rush for a lot of the day, although there were some key moments where these guys really came through. They also had a rough time in run stopping, although they didn't get a ton of support from the linebackers either. Overall not a great day for them, but not a disaster either. They need to step it up as we get more into the season if we're going to be a legitimate contender in the ACC.

Linebackers: C-

The starting linebackers combined for 5 tackles -- 3 from Jabari Hunt-Days, 2 from Brandon Watts, and nothing from Quayshawn Nealy. However, Nealy left the game in the first half and I don't believe he returned, and his replacement, freshman P.J. Davis, added 3 tackles. I want to give these guys a lower grade than I did, but in a win it didn't seem appropriate. These guys had a tough time all day between stopping runs and covering UNC TE Eric Ebron. Hopefully this gets better down the stretch.

Secondary: A

I gotta tell you, this unit was the saving grace of the defense today. Jamal Golden and Jemea Thomas co-led the defense with 4 solo tackles, and Thomas added a pass break-up for good measure. Chris Milton added 3 tackles of his own, including the only tackle-for-loss besides Jerry's sack. Louis Young broke up a couple of passes, made 2.5 tackles, and had a clutch, momentum-killing interception midway through the 4th quarter on UNC's second-to-last drive. Props go out to him for sticking with his man through an afternoon filled with frustration. From there, Domonique Noble had a pass break-up, and Demond Smith and Lynn Griffin were able to contribute some as well. I was happy with how this unit performed, even given the adversity it faced of Chris Milton and Jamal Golden missing significant parts of the game after injuries. I look forward to seeing these guys build on this performance on Thursday.

Special Teams: B?

"Special" is a good word for this unit. Sean Poole had an interesting afternoon -- 4 punts for an average of 46.5 yards, as well as a 20-yard carry for a first down that was called back by a holding call, and then resulted in a first down after, well...stuff got kinda weird. Harrison Butker had a pretty good day with kickoffs, and even recorded 2 tackles (officially more defensively productive than Adam Gotsis...). His coverage unit was pretty terrible though, and I just really don't know how I feel about them the last two games.

Weird game with a lot of ups and downs for the Special Teams units. I'll give them a B?

What are your unit grades, readers?

There wasn't much about it that you'd call "pretty", but at the end of the game Tech had more points on the scoreboard.

The first word that comes to my mind when I look back at this game is "rain". I think you'll understand why.

The second word that comes to my mind is "ugly". This win was ugly, there's no doubt about that -- but it was a win, and still found ways to impress me.

UNC came out and scored 13 points in the first quarter before the Yellow Jackets were really able to get much going. It wasn't looking good -- the UNC offense was thrashing Ted Roof's crew, and the Tech offense looked like it was operating in quicksand.

The Yellow Jackets responded to the Tar Heels' second TD with a score of their own, although they would be answered right back as North Carolina scored their third touchdown on four drives, to make the game 20-7 in their favor.

Here's where my "impressed" feelings come from. Georgia Tech is down two scores, playing in the rain and struggling to get much of anything going, and it's not looking good. It's a great time to roll over and call it quits and start thinking about Virginia Tech on Thursday.

Obviously Tech disagreed. The Yellow Jackets scored a pretty TD on a pass from Vad Lee to Darren Waller with less than a minute until halftime, and made some adjustments in the locker room that enabled them to shut down the Tar Heel offense in the second half. Consider this: after halftime, UNC's stat line reads as such...

18 plays, 58 yards, 7:39 TOP, 3 punts, 1 INT, 0 points

Folks, that's called taking a team to the woodshed.

Tech added two touchdowns on drives of 9- and 11-plays respectively, and were able to kill the clock and finish a 13-play drive with two plays from victory formation.

It wasn't pretty, but it was a good sign that the team was able to fight back from the edge of the cliff to push UNC right back off of their side. Good win. Looking forward to this Thursday.

What are your thoughts about this win, Tech fans??

Today, the Yellow Jackets look to earn a second straight win over a divisional opponent as they take on Larry Fedora's Tar Heels.

This afternoon, Georgia Tech will open a tough four-game stretch after warm-up games against Elon and Duke. The next four games come against divisional opponents UNC, Virginia Tech, and then Miami, before they travel to Provo, UT to take on BYU. Today's game is a rematch of last year's game that finished with a combined 118 points, as Tech rolled 68-50 in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels bring an up-tempo offense led by senior QB Bryn Renner and TE Eric Ebron, while the Jackets look to counter with a defense led by senior DE Jeremiah Attaochu and senior LB Brandon Watts.

Meanwhile, there's a really interesting look at the UNC-GT series in the Paul Johnson era over at Tar Heel Blog which I'd recommend checking out.
