On Saturday, it was Tech's offense that caused "fatigue"...

Georgia Tech came in knowing a win against Duke would end their ACC contests with a share of the Coastal divion lead. In workman-like fashion, Tech grinded it out early, then rode the hot hand of Tevin Washington and the B-Backs to a 42-24 victory on Saturday. It was Senior Day (as well as Military Appreciation Day), and Seniors played key roles in the win. Tech has now won 4 out of their last 5 games.

The game started like a shootout...albeit in slow-motion. Both teams matched each other for scores in the first half, but on only 4 possessions each. As they did the week before, Tech's defense locked down the opposition in the 2nd half. They say that the 1st drive of the 3rd quarter is the most important in the game. With Tech facing a 3rd-and-7 on this opening drive in the 3rd, Tevin threw a bubble screen to Chris Jackson, and what ensued will be remembered for a long time. The ball goes through Chris Jackson's fingers, and after later admitting to missing his blocking assignment, OT Ray Beno snatches the ball out the air...then stumbles upfield down the sideline for 9 yards and a 1st down. Tech never looked back after that heads-up play by Ray Beno.

OFFENSE

It's hard not be impressed by the complete dominance of Tech's offense, as they controlled the clock to the tune of a 38-22 TOP edge. So you like a good "Death March" drive? How about 5 of them? On 5 of the first 6 drives, Tech reeled off drives of 13, 10, 16, 13, and 18 plays (these 5 drives alone consumed 31 minutes) and 5 touchdowns. How do you do that? By converting on 3rd down, which Tech did 13 out of 20 times. B-Backs Zach Laskey and David Sims ran hard, combining to rush for 142 yards on 29 carries (4.9 yards/rush)...and each provided a TD for Tech.

As had been the gameplan, CPJ gave Tevin and Vad Lee each 2 series. Who'd have thought that Vad's second drive (and Tech's 4th overall) would start only with about 1 minute left in the 1st half? Tevin finished the game, but not without Vad showing incredible athleticism on a 4th and Goal from the 2 where he was dead-to-rights behind the LOS...yet made a wiggle, made a tackler miss, and lept across the goalline to put Tech up 21-17.

On Senior Day, it was Senior Tevin Washington that stole the show. He opened the scoring in the 1st quarter with a 1-yard TD run that eclipsed Josh Nesbitt's ACC record for career rushing TDs by a QB (by the way, Vad is already in the top-10 on this list and may destroy this record before all is said and done.) Tevin on the day rushed for 62 yards on 19 carries, and passed 6-10 for 102 yards and 3 TDs.

DEFENSE

After allowing Duke to score on 4 of their first 5 drives, Tech's defense once again locked the Blue Devils down in the 2nd half. In the final 20 minutes of the game, the defense held Duke to only 33 yards on 14 plays...including a 4th down stop (on the fake punt) and an interception by Jamal Golden.

The most noticeable aspect of Tech's defensive output was the disruptive pass rush that pressured Duke's Sean Renfree. On the afternoon, the defense recorded 4 sacks (Attaochu 2, Barnes, Gotsis) and forced 2 holding penalties in big spots. The defense also held Duke to only 3.5 yards/rush, and limited Duke to only converting 3 out of 10 3rd downs. And finally, we saw solid tackling and pass coverage for an extended period.

SPECIAL TEAMS

There actually wasn't a whole lot of Special Teams play in this game, except for the XP team. Tech only recevied 1 kickoff and 1 punt return...Duke's Ross Wilson put the ball in the endzone on kickoffs, and because both teams went for it on 4th down 4 times each in this game. The units were solid, with the exception of a Sean Spoole shank of a rugby-style punt before the end of the 1st half (thankfully Duke didn't have much time left).

OK, it's COFH week. Does Tech keep the momentum going into Athens? Does Tech get motivated by ruining the MNC chances for the DWAGS?

With a win tonight, Georgia Tech put itself in the running for the ACC Coastal title.

It began just like any other prototypical Georgia Tech shootout. We score, they score, we score, they score, we score...we get a STOP? Between a few such stops and a HUGE effort from Tevin, Zach Laskey, Attaochu and lots of others, Georgia Tech may have very well completed its journey from ACC bottom feeders to Coastal division champions tonight. With another little bump from crazy old testament God and the angry ACC Gods of Football, of course.

Our game plan started, like it always does, with the offense. Tevin Washington put in four touchdowns tonight (three on the ground, one in the air), tying his career high. Robbie Godhigh added another two (through the air, surprisingly enough). Tevin was also 6-10 and had 102 yards. Of the offense's (somewhat) newfound effectiveness, Tevin said that the team is paying more "attention to detail," concentrating on things like playing with positive energy and team focus in key situations. If you ask me, these don't sound so much like "little details" so much as "wholesale attitude changes," but to each his own.

The defense also helped out, with four sacks (!), one interception, and three pass break-ups, including a huge one by T.J. Barnes in the 4th that put the light out on Duke's last real chance to get back in the game. After the offense-filled first half it appeared that the D wasn't going to be a factor in this game, but as coach Johnson pointed out in his post-game conference, Duke only had 154 yards at halftime! The score was close, but that was more us shooting ourselves in the foot with that long kickoff return and less Duke gaining any offensive ground.

There were a couple big factors that influenced all these goings-on and I'd like to take a minute to adress them. We'll start with the defense, because that's the area that showed the most improvement tonight. Earlier in the season the defensive staff put an emphasis on tackling in practice. Today it paid off, with hard hits and fundamentals tackling (can you believe it? I still think I'm hallucinating) a common sight on the field. There were some missed or miffed tackles towards the end, but for the most part, guys were getting to the ball and laying out for it. I asked coach Johnson and the defensive players what was different this time, and they said there were no major changes in tackling technique. I think that our guys were getting better angles because Duke players are less athletic and shifty than other guys we've seen to be quite honest, but that's just me. The other thing the D did very well was penetration on the line. Again, athletic disparity probably was a factor here, but the ends were rotating off their blocks like I've never seen this season. T.J. Barnes and Adam Gotsis were big factors in the trenches, getting in the Duke backfield several times and earning a sack each.

The offense also saw its share of improvement, particularly regarding the blocking. The OL continued to put the defense on their butts and opened up big holes in the Duke line for the b-backs to charge on through. On the outside, Robbie Godhigh said bullocks to size and blocked particularly well laying out corners all night. As a result of all these butts on the ground, the BB's had a big night and collectively accounted for 148 of 330 rushing yards. There was really only one bad on offense: Orwin Smith left the game in the 4th quarter and was in the training room after the game. However, he left the game under his own power, and did not look to be too badly hurt.

All in all, this was a great game to have right before DWAGZ to give us confidence and give us an example of how we could and should perform. What do you think about it FTRS readers? What did you see in the game that we can work on, and what did you see that should make your dwag friends pee their pants?

It's time to send our seniors off right. This team is 3-3 so far at home this year -- we need to get these guys one last win on the Flats as a thank you for all that they've done for the program. They're playing a Duke team that's not as weak as usual, or as weak as some think, and will need a solid performance to make sure that they bring home the W. The game starts at 3:30 and will be broadcast on ESPNU! Stay tuned here for live commenting from Nate, and follow him at @FTRSNate for more of his in-depth insights and analysis of the game as it unfolds.

With a win this weekend, Georgia Tech will become bowl eligible and force at least a tie in the Coastal Division. With a loss, they'll travel to Athens next week needing a win to become bowl eligible. Here are the keys to this weekend's game.

Georgia Tech's Focus

It's Duke. You're nearly a 2 touchdown favorite. The stadium's going to be half-empty. You just ROLLED North Carolina. Your QB is a rising star. Finals are soon. You're going home for Thanksgiving next week. You have a game against your hated in-state rival after that.

I can give you a thousand reasons that Tech players have to come into this game completely taking it for granted. The bad news is that if that happens, Duke, while not being a household name in college football (for positive reasons, anyways), is more than capable of sneaking up on us and winning. Focus. We're going to need it this weekend to be sure that we take care of business. Miss assignments, miss blocks, miss tackles, turn the ball over, make special teams mistakes, etc, and we're not good enough to recover against a team like Duke.

(As an aside, if you had told me as a freshman that 3 years later I'd be writing that paragraph, I would have asked for some of what you were drinking.)

Sean Renfree and Duke's O-Line

It's no secret that Duke's offense revolves entirely around their passing game. Now, I've come to the realization that, more often than not, we're not worth a whole lot when it comes to rushing the passer. That said, we have a very athletic front that can make Renfree's life miserable if given the opportunity. At the same time, our passing defense isn't great, especially considering we expected the secondary to be one of this team's strengths. A lot of how this game turns out will revolve around whether Renfree has time and can make good throws. Pressure him consistently, and the throws will become errant. If he starts making bad throws and has a few interceptions, they'll be creating a hole that will be tough to dig themselves out of.

Georgia Tech's Special Teams

They don't have to be perfect. They don't need any of Jamal Golden's heroics. They simply can't make any major mistakes. No muffed punts leading to turnovers, no returns for touchdowns allowed, no blocked kicks, etc. Again, they don't need to be perfect -- but special teams mistakes, as usual, are a really good way to give the other team momentum and keep them in the game while at the same time getting into your own head. Make more than one major mistake and, honestly, I really don't know if we'll be able to recover.

Continue the Block Party

Lead by the Goon Squad, the last two weeks have featured our offense putting on an absolute clinic in blocking. On a completely unrelated (or so) note, we've seen an abundance of lengthier runs in those games. That blocking means that 3 yard gains turn into 10 and 12 yard carries. A 2 or 3 yard loss, combined with a broken tackle, turns into a 25 yard gain. The Rocket Toss works like a charm. This impressive blocking display needs to be continued, and if it is, Tech's offense may well pick up right where it left off last week.

Tackling

Whichever team does it better will have a leg up in this game. It's been our Achilles' heel on defense at times this season, and it's another good way to keep a team like Duke, who loves to gain yards in chunks, in the game. At the same time, if Duke can't wrap up our ballcarriers, we've seen what they can know, and know that it'll be just another one of many miserable, long afternoons on the Flats for them.

That's my take on things, readers. What say you? How will this game be won by either side?

Seniors will run behind the Ramblin' Wreck for the last time at Historic Grant Field...

Georgia Tech hosts Duke (3:30 PM, ESPNU) in what could be a deciding game in determining the ACC Coastal division title and a trip to Charlotte to play FSU for the ACC Championship.

The sheer probability of that would have boggled your mind after Tech opened their season at 2-4 (1-3)...but since the tumultuous by week the team has posted a 3-1 (3-0) mark and, along with help from other ACC rivals, finds itself in position to reach some pretty important goals, such as...

* Become bowl eligible for the 16th straight season

* Move into 2nd place in the Coastal (and possibly represent the Coastal pending Miami's decision to self-impose)

Duke brings its most prolific offensive unit into Atlanta in its history, with Seniors Sean Renfree and Connor Vernon leading a pass-oriented attack against Tech's defense. Will it be another shootout like last week against UNC?

What do you hope to see tomorrow? Are you going to be there?

Surprisingly, a blog on the internet writes about duke football. Not surprisingly, they gave us some good insight into the game this weekend. Let's take a peek, shall we?

Mr. Mike Kline of the fine DukeSportsBlog.com took the time to answer some of our questions about the upcoming Duke game this weekend. Head over there to find our responses to his queries, and continue below for his answers to our questions:

1) Did David Cutcliffe conjure up a magic elixer? What's gotten into this Duke team that's looking like its back on the path to the Spurrier days?

Well my hope that what Cutcliffe is doing tops what Spurrier did and that he won't be bolting for another school anytime soon. I think it is a combination of improvements in all facets of the program. He's got the university committed to football. Facility improvements are in the works and will be a drastic improvement. Recruiting is taking off and he is finally getting to the point where he can redshirt some guys and build up the pipeline of talent. The reason he has been successful is because he is at a program that is so starved for success they will give him time to figure it out where as some of the more established programs give you two-three years tops before you are out.

2) Are you worried about losing Cutcliffe to Tennessee? I think they miss Fulmer enough that they'd bring back Coach Cut as a harkening back to the glory days. They also have more than enough money to sway any loyalties CDC may feel, in my opinion.

I've written several times about this very concern. At this point I don't think at 58 Cut will be interested in getting back in the rat race of the SEC. He is a loyal guy and though the ties to Tennessee are strong, if he goes there and finishes 6-6 his job's in jeopardy where at Duke he could get to an ACC Title game and likely have buildings named after him. I think if he was going to leave he would have done it two years ago when Duke wasn't showing signs of life, but at this point I think he has put to much investment in the program to walk away. With that said if he wants a crack at a national championship he might be lured to a bigger program, but for now I think he is going to be Duke's coach for the foreseeable future.

3) What's Duke's defensive plan of attack? Do you think they're changing anything up for us, or is it just the same attack that we've seen all season?

Well with trying to stop an option attack you have to play disciplined assignment football. Duke did some prep work in the spring and back in August and had the bye week to work on it again. But working on it and stopping it are two different things. Stopping Georgia Tech will require that discipline but it will required smart play by the secondary. With Vad Lee more of a throwing threat, Duke's defensive backfield has to be mindful and can't get caught sleeping or they will get burned. That said they have to be aggressive in helping fill their assignments against the run.

4) Who should we watch out for on the Duke offense besides Renfree? Granted, with our defense, we should be on lookout for the whole team, but who's been the go-to threat all season long?

In the passing game it is obviously Conner Vernon who is a little over 40 yards away from becoming the ACC's all-time leading receiver. Duke also has Jamison Crowder is fast and get behind the secondary as well as Desmond Scott. The running game has been a back by committee but freshman Jela Duncan has been there best back so expect him to get carries. Also look for Brandon Connette to line up in a variety of positions, especially in short yardage and redzone opportunities.
