Harris’s departure leaves Tech with three offensive linemen in the 2017 class

For the second time in the past week, Tech’s 2017 football recruiting class has taken a hit. Demetris Harris, a three-star offensive lineman from Jacksonville, FL, announced his decommitment from Tech on Thursday afternoon with a brief statement on Twitter.

My recruitment is 100% open❗️ pic.twitter.com/yta5uiWmbS
— Demetris Harris (@Meech64_) December 8, 2016

Harris—who was rated a three-star recruit on both Rivals (5.6) and 247 (.8207)—becomes the second player in Tech’s 2017 class to withdraw his commitment, following defensive back O.J. Tucker’s decommitment this past Friday. Like Tucker, he was in a position group where Tech had several other commits; specifically, Harris was one of four offensive linemen in Tech’s 2017 class alongside fellow three-star recruits Connor Hansen, Zach Quinney, and Michael Minihan. Adding line depth was a major priority since Tech will head into next season with just 10 scholarship linemen on the roster (not including the 2017 commits), and it’s likely that coach Paul Johnson and his staff will still pursue another offensive lineman for this year’s class.

Per Rivals, Harris has reported offers from Wake Forest, South Florida, Central Florida, and Georgia Southern, along with several other G5 and FCS schools. As of now, he has official visits to Wake, USF, and Tech planned in January, with the Atlanta visit occurring the weekend before National Signing Day.

With Harris’s decommitment, Tech is down to 13 committed players in the 2017 recruiting class:

The Yellow Jackets have had their first decommitment of the 2017 class.

After a pair of commitments in late November, Georgia Tech’s 2017 recruiting class shrank on Friday when DB O.J. Tucker decided to decommit. The 3-star native of Ocala, FL didn’t post an announcement on Twitter, but called to inform the coaching staff and retweeted multiple articles covering his change of heart.

After committing in early August, the Yellow Jackets added two more defensive backs in the following weeks, with Gentry Bonds’ commitment on August 17th and Tre’ Swilling’s commitment less than a week after that. Including the previous commitments of Dameon Williams and Jaytlin Askew, Tucker was the lowest-rated commitment of the group in the 247Sports Composite. Tucker still intends to visit the Flats on January 27th-29th, but will now also visit Maryland and Wake Forest in the weekends leading up to that one.

Tucker’s decommitment reduces Georgia Tech to 14 commitments for its 2017 recruiting class. It now looks like this:

A great weekend got even better on Sunday!

Ed. Note: Apologies for the delay on this. It’s been a busy week for the staff, both here and elsewhere.

On Saturday, Qua Searcy’s dive to seal a Georgia Tech win over their in-state rivals ensured it would be a good weekend for the Yellow Jackets’ coaches and fanbase. On Sunday afternoon, the weekend got a little better as the coaching staff got word that recently-offered QB Tobias Oliver had committed to Georgia Tech.

This is my Commitment....#TogetherWeSwarm pic.twitter.com/z56WqzE10E
— Tobias Oliver II™ (@tobiasoliver12) November 27, 2016

Oliver is listed around 6’2”, 180 pounds, and hails from Northside High School in Warner Robins, GA. His only other reported FBS offers were from Troy and Army, but he’s gotten more interest from bigger programs throughout the season, as he’s led his high school team to an 11-2 record with an upcoming appearance in the state semifinals this weekend.

A look at Oliver’s highlights (one of his games from this year are shown below) show why the Georgia Tech coaching staff would be interested in him. He’s a very gifted runner, with a great combination of top-end speed, acceleration, agility, and balance. He’s also fully comfortable operating within an option system that involves more than just the standard read option — he’s shown making good reads to pitch the ball, both backwards and forwards. I have one primary concern about Oliver as a quarterback in Georgia Tech’s system — his frame. Oliver is tall at 6’2” (for comparison, Justin Thomas is around 5’10”), but at only 180 pounds (roughly the same as Thomas) his frame is extremely slight. That helps him to be so nimble in his running, but also could be cause for durability issues.

In passing the ball, Oliver is reasonably accurate, although I can’t say I’ve seen him make many particularly tough throws (including highlights from other games). My main concern about Oliver, from a passing perspective, is arm strength. None of his throws (again, including other games) appear to have much power behind them. As a quarterback at Georgia Tech, he may not have to make a ton of tough throws, but he’ll need to have the arm strength to put the ball in windows while they’re present, before throws become a lot more tough. That, not to mention that he’ll also be asked to throw the ball deep down the field regularly within the passing game.

Oliver is a strong pickup for Georgia Tech — a quarterback with the athleticism to contribute at a lot of other positions if necessary. He’s rated as only a two-star prospect by Rivals (5.3), although that seems a little outdated considering his performance this season. He’s rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports (89) and the 247Sports Composite (0.8374).

As of now, Georgia Tech’s 2017 recruiting class is as follows:

The Yellow Jackets’ recent roll in recruiting continues, with lucky #13.

Just a few days after his brother, 4-star CB Tre’ Swilling, committed to Georgia Tech on Monday, 4-star RB/LB Bruce Jordan-Swilling joined him. Together, the brothers will continue the family legacy at Georgia Tech, where their father Pat is in the Hall of Fame.

Jordan-Swilling becomes the highest-rated player in the class, rated as a 4-star by both Rivals (5.8) and the 247Sports Composite (0.9396). When he signs, he’ll also becomes the highest-rated player signed by Paul Johnson at Georgia Tech, narrowly edging Justin Thomas (0.9372) and coming in right behind 2007 recruit Derrick Morgan (0.9411). He is rated as the #10 OLB in the 2017 class and the #6 player in Louisiana. Bruce stands at 6’0” and weighs about 215 pounds. Coming out of Brother martin High School in New Orleans, Jordan-Swilling had offers from more than 25 schools, most notably Alabama, Florida State, USC and LSU.

My first thought when I watched that highlight was, “That’s a football player.” I don’t know how to better embody Bruce Jordan-Swilling than that. He figures to play more on the defensive side of the ball in college, but appears more than capable of being a ballcarrier in Paul Johnson’s offense if necessary. He possesses a rare combination of size and speed, with a respectable 4.57 40 time, according to ESPN. Jordan-Swilling is a fantastic addition to this class, regardless of which side of the ball he ends up on.

Jordan-Swilling’s commitment is just the latest in an incredible run of recruiting for Georgia Tech in the month of August. He becomes the fourth commitment in the month, and the third to be rated a 4-star prospect by Rivals. With his commitment, the 2017 recruiting class for Georgia Tech looks like this:

Tech adds its highest-rated player yet in the 2017 class.

The Yellow Jackets have picked up their twelfth commitment of the 2017 class, and it’s a big one. Tre Swilling - son of former Georgia Tech great Pat Swilling - is coming to The Flats.

CB Tre Swilling becomes the second-highest rated player in the class, rated as a 4-star by Rivals (5.8) and a 3-star by the 247Sports Composite (0.8752). Swilling is ranked as the #16 player in Louisiana and as the #43 cornerback in the nation. He is also 6’0” and weighs 180 pounds. Choosing Tech over offers including Alabama, Florida State and LSU, Swilling becomes the latest player in the secondary for the 2017 class, joining Gentry Bonds, Dameon Williams, Jaytlin Askew and OJ Tucker.

Tre shows a great nose for the ball and an ability to close on receivers from virtually anywhere. It’s evident why he is rated as highly as he is. If he isn’t able to intercept the ball, he still breaks it up. And he doesn’t appear to lack for physicality, either. A future defensive backfield featuring Swilling opposite Gentry Bonds could be quite formidable for opposing quarterbacks.

It is also worth noting many people thought Tre and his brother, Bruce Jordan-Swilling would be committing together, even as referenced by Tre himself earlier this morning.

The Yellow Jackets add their highest-rated recruit yet with a highly versatile defensive back.

Rumors began swirling Wednesday afternoon about Georgia Tech gaining a commitment for its 2017 class. Those rumors were confirmed on Thursday morning, as 4-star DB Gentry Bonds announced his commitment to Georgia Tech.

This is a big-time pickup for the Yellow Jackets, as Bonds becomes the the highest-rated recruit in the class (depending on which service is being considered). A native of Murfreesboro, TN, Bonds stands 6’1” and weighs in around 190 pounds. He plays for Riverdale High School, where he’s the highest-rated recruit in recent years. Bonds commits to Georgia Tech over the remainder of his top 5 — Clemson, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kentucky — as well as offers from Louisville, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt.

Bonds’ junior highlights show a very gifted, versatile defensive back. He plays both cornerback and safety, showing equal prowess in both man and zone coverage. Bonds shows good instincts, breaking on balls and reading quarterbacks very well. He also shows good hands, converting some tough interceptions off of tipped passes. It should be noticed here, too, that Bonds shows some very good physicality, using his larger frame to his advantage. In transitioning to college, Bonds will need to continue improving his athleticism and the fluidity in his hips, and needs to polish some of his coverage skills. That said, his versatility is a huge part of his value on the football field, and lends itself very nicely to his transition to the Flats.

He becomes the 11th commitment and 4th defensive back in his recruiting class, joining Dameon Williams, Jaytlin Askew, and OJ Tucker in the secondary. Including recent ratings updates from Rivals, the 2017 recruiting class now shapes up like this:

The Yellow Jackets add their third defensive back to the 2017 recruiting class shortly after the start of fall camp.

Right on the heels of the start to fall camp late last week, Georgia Tech’s coaching staff got its tenth commitment from 3-star Florida DB O.J. Tucker.

Truly Blessed To Announce That I Am Officially A Yellow Jacket! #SWARM17 pic.twitter.com/Tz9B74B0Ld
— Juice_3k (@DatDude_Tuckk) August 6, 2016

As the tenth commitment in the class, Tucker becomes the third defensive back in the class, joining Jaytlin Askew and Dameon Williams. Tucker stands 6’0”, weighs in at 190 pounds, and comes from Vanguard High School in Ocala, FL. He commits to Georgia Tech over reported offers from Nebraska, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Iowa State, UCF, and more FBS programs.

Listed between 6’0” and 6’1” (depending on the site) and approaching 200 pounds, Tucker shows good size for a cornerback, which translates into good shows of strength when trying to knock wide receivers off of the line of scrimmage and when playing the ball on passes. He also displays pretty good ball skills in his junior highlights, bringing in interceptions off of tipped passes and knocking down passes from behind even when receivers have the positional advantage over him. One of my biggest questions about Tucker is his top-end speed, which on his highlights doesn’t make him particularly stand out against his high school competition.

With the numbers as they are and Tucker being the third defensive back to commit in this class, it’s unclear whether Tucker fits in as a cornerback or safety. With the current distribution of scholarships, it wouldn’t make sense to everyone slotted at cornerback (as the previous two commitments were, as as Tucker’s highlights show him playing pretty exclusively). Given his size and speed, my initial inclination would be that Tucker translates to the next level as a safety, but time will tell how that is sorted out.

Tucker is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals (5.5) and the 247Sports Composite (0.8455 — #2 in the class, currently).

Minihan is a three-star guard from the St. Louis School in Honolulu, Hawaii. He stands at 6’3”, weighs in around 285 pounds, and chose Georgia Tech over offers from Air Force, Army, Idaho, San Jose State and UNLV. Minihan’s commitment came only a few days after being offered by the Yellow Jackets.

This is the fourth offensive lineman in the 2017 class that now includes nine players. He’s the third commitment in the last 10 days, all of which have been offensive linemen. We saw last season just how critical a good offensive line is, and the coaching staff seems to be stockpiling players on the offensive front in this class. Minihan’s highlights from his junior season show encouraging signs in both run blocking and pass protection.
