Welcome to From the Rumble Seat’s coverage of National Signing Day 2017!
What is National Signing Day?
For those unaware, National Signing Day is the first day in which high school seniors can sign National Letters of Intent (LOI’s) to accept a football scholarship to play in college — an action that binds them with the school of their choice unless that school releases them from it. While important to note that the first Wednesday in February is only the first day in which high school seniors can sign an LOI, it’s the day in which most high school seniors that have been recruited will sign. While some players will sign after NSD each year, those are pretty exceptionally rare cases — NSD traditionally marks the end of the recruitment of any given class of high school seniors (with few exceptions), and things like recruiting class rankings are considered complete for all intents and purposes on NSD.
What’s going on for Georgia Tech on National Signing Day?
While some schools out there are waiting to hear from certain prospects (who will announce their commitments publicly on National Signing Day), Georgia Tech’s recruiting class is basically complete, and any last-minute changes would be a surprise.
Instead, the GTAA will be hosting a small National Signing Day celebration at the Edge Center (in the northeast corner of Bobby Dodd Stadium), where the coaches will present the Yellow Jackets’ commitments and speak about their strengths and each individual recruitment. This celebration begins at 8:30am ET, and is open to the public if you’d like to attend!
For those unable to attend, you’re in luck — this ceremony will also be broadcast on WatchESPN and Facebook Live!
We’ll also be covering this event LIVE right here, so keep your browser tuned to FTRS for all NSD-related updates!
What’s the latest on Georgia Tech’s recruiting efforts?
They’re doing really well in recruiting, to say the least. Since our last major update last week (January 24th), they’ve finished strong. Following the final weekend of visits, the following has happened:
- On Sunday, DB Tariq Carpenter flipped from UCF, and became commitment #21
- Later on Sunday, OL Boe Tufele came out of nowhere, and became commitment #22
- On Monday, 4-star DB Kaleb Oliver became the fourth 4-star commitment in the class when he became commitment #23
- Later Monday, WR Adonicas Sanders was the fourth commitment in under 36 hours when he became commitment #24
- On Tuesday, target WR Marlon Williams announced his commitment to UCF
Who is Georgia Tech still waiting to hear from?
Of the prospects that Kieffer covered a couple of weeks back, there are only two main prospects that we’re waiting to hear from. We should see a commitment from each at some point today, whether to Georgia Tech or elsewhere:
- Hawaiian DT Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa, who visited the Flats on December 9th and has since visited Navy, Notre Dame, and Vanderbilt. UPDATE: Tagovailoa-Amosa has signed with Notre Dame.
- Hawaiian DL Aliki Vimahi, who visited Georgia Tech the weekend of January 13th, and has also visited UCLA, Utah, and Virginia. UPDATE: Vimahi has signed with Utah.
Who will Georgia Tech introduce us to on National Signing Day?
You’ll have a chance to meet the players committed to the Yellow Jackets, through the coaches discussing them and with actual interviews with early-enrolled DB commitments Gentry Bonds and Jaytlin Askew! The list of players the coaches will be discussing is as follows:
