On the heels of a weekend where Georgia Tech had a pair of uncommitted visitors, and the commitment of one of them earlier in the day, the Yellow Jackets scored their second commitment of the morning from Cartersville DB Avery Showell.

Avery stands at 6’2”, weighs in at 200lbs, and hails from Cartersville High School. He commits to Georgia Tech after officially visiting Wake Forest last weekend, over offers from West Virginia, Minnesota, Middle Tennessee State, and a visit planned to Kansas State next weekend. (It’s unclear at this point whether he’ll still take that visit, although the coaching staff’s policies would make that seem unlikely.) After O.J. Tucker’s decommitment in December, Showell becomes the fifth DB in Georgia Tech’s 2017 recruiting class and the 8th commitment from the greater Atlanta area.
For a guy listed by all major recruiting services as a safety, Showell’s senior highlights are a little unusual. They hardly show him in coverage whatsoever, but instead focus on him playing an edge rusher-type role on defense and as a wide receiver (or occasionally tight end) role on offense. That said, his highlights show a few things that will translate to the safety position extremely well:
- Showell displays excellent athleticism, both in straight-line speed as well as agility. His athleticism is a big reason for his success in the role he played on defense.
- Not only is he athletic, but Showell plays the game with a high level of physicality. That bodes well for him in a safety position, where he’ll occasionally need to step up and support the run or lay the lumber to an opposing wide receiver.
- As a receiver, Showell shows pretty excellent ball skills. He’s able to make catches down the field while being covered, shorter passes in traffic, and various other situations. That will translate very well to him playing safety, where some players have more of a knack for making interceptions than others do.
It’s also worth mentioning that when Showell was first mentioned among our FTRS staff, it was pointed out that he’s listed between 6’2” and 6’3”. Kieffer in particular was excited about Showell’s length — that’s prototypical NFL defensive back length.
Showell is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals (5.6) and the 247Sports Composite (0.8320).
Congratulations to Showell, his family, and the coaching staff!
Showell’s commitment brings Georgia Tech’s 2017 recruiting class to 18 members. Here’s what it looks like:
