Last night, John Brice of Football Scoop reported that Georgia Tech was hiring Memphis DL Coach/Run Game Coordinator Kyle Pope as a defensive assistant.

Rivals’ Kelly Quinlan later confirmed the report.

The Yellow Jackets recently hired Jess Simpson to serve as the DL coach, and according to the Football Scoop article, Pope is also expected to be working with the defensive line, although he does have previous experience with linebackers.

This news all but confirms that DL Coach Marco Coleman will not be coaching with the Yellow Jackets next season.

Not to overshadow the news of Pope, but Quinlan also posted an update on the defensive staff search behind his paywall last night.

Although I can’t see what’s behind the paywall, KQ does share one tidbit, squashing the rumor that Tech was targeting Alabama LB Coach Robert Bala for the DC position. Interestingly, Bala and Pope both used to coach linebackers at Liberty (in different seasons, of course).

I think it makes a lot of sense that Bala is not being targeted as the defensive coordinator. Although he is a defensive assistant at Bama, he has very little experience as a defensive coordinator, and none at the FBS level. With Key bringing in so many defensive staff members, though, I expect we’ll begin to hear more news on the DC front soon.
