2021 FTRS Picks, Week 3: Happy Little Losses

Alabama v Florida Photo by James Gilbert/Getty Images

The average on picks last week sat around 4.17 points with a 4 way tie at the top scorers for the week. ClavinCliff, Hoot, GTSmurf, and FireTheOC all had the top score of the week with 7 correct picks. ClavinCliff is also our top scorer on the year with 17 correct picks and a correct pick percentage of 56.67%. There are a few names with higher pick percentages, but those users have not picked games each week, so congrats to Clavin for having the top spot. Here is the current results for the picks following last week:

Pick Standings

I was actually in Asheville, North Carolina last weekend for a wedding. Asheville is pretty nice to the homeless so I’m feeling less rambly than normal. Georgia Tech getting a close loss against Clemson is also a plus...

THE DEFENSE HAS BEEN ENHANCED BY NANO MACHINES!!! DEFENSE OF THE FUTURE, MAKING PARTIALLY ROBOTIC DEFENDERS TO PLAY BETTER DEFENSE!!! I FOR ONE SUPPORT OUR NEW CYBORG OVERLORDS!!!

SEC REFS TRYING TO RIG THE GAMES!!! IF THE SEC CAN’T WIN THROUGH TALENT I GUESS THEY GOTTA GET THE REFS TO TAKE DOWN THE OTHER TEAMS!!! THEY ALSO TRIED TO COVER IT UP BY BLOWING A CALL AGAINST ANOTHER SEC SQUAD!!! DON’T TRUST THE REFS PAAWWWWLLLL!!!

LOOK AT ALL THEM QUALITY LOSSES THIS WEEK!!! GEORGIA TECH!!! FLORIDA!!! VIRGINIA TECH!!! PITT!!!

... well maybe not Pitt. THAT WESTERN MICHIGAN TEAM DIDN’T PUT NOTHING IN THE WATER!!! PITT HAS AN UNHEALTHY DIET!!!

The first 3 (or 4 depending on how you count them) weeks have been great for college football and I can’t wait to see what this weekend holds.

picks for this week.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs #21 North Carolina Tar Heels (-12.5)

Logan: It is so weird to say we are riding high after a loss. I guess 2 seasons of 3-9 ball can do that to a person. We looked good out there, and while I did pick Tech to cover last week I did not expect it to be nearly as close as it was. The game this week is basically a home game at Mercedes-Benz stadium, so hopefully that will mean a good showing from the fans. This will be a tough game, and may well define the rest of the GT season. Regardless I’m on Geoff Collins Wild Ride and I can’t get off now. I’ll take Tech to cover based on what I saw last week and the fact that I think the spread for the Heels is too large given what we’ve seen from both teams.

Logan’s pick: GT covers

LSU Tigers (-2.5) @ Mississippi State Cowbells

Logan: This one is a little tough because both teams have had their struggles. Mississippi State is coming off a loss to Memphis where, as we stated above, they were done dirty by the SEC refs. LSU has a two win streak going against Central Michigan and McNeese, but lost the only serious game they played this year against UCLA. I think Mississippi State will come into this game looking to prove something and LSU hasn’t shown me enough to make me feel like they can contend.

Logan’s pick: Mississippi State

Mizzou Tigers (-1.5) @ Boston College Eagles

Logan: Boston College has looked good to start the season, especially on defense. That said this will be Boston College’s first power 5 opponent on the year. Mizzou has performed well offensively but is also giving up an average of 455.7 yds per game on defense. I’m gonna take the Eagles in this one, straight up.

Logan’s pick: BC

#7 Texas A&M Aggies (-5.5) vs #16 Arkansas Razorbacks

Logan: This is weird to say, but of these two teams Arkansas has looked better. Part of that is because Texas A&M had to make due with their backup QB in Zach Calzada over the past few games, but honestly Arkansas has surprised me by how well both their offense and defense has looked. I definitely disrespected the Razorbacks earlier on in the season because of their past history in the SEC, but they are feeling it right now. If the Aggies want to win their defense is going to have to continue to play lights out. This is gonna be a fun rivalry game to watch. I’m gonna take Arkansas to cover in a close one.

Logan’s pick: Arkansas covers

#9 Clemson Tigers (-10) @ NC State Wolfpack

Logan: Look, I get it, after last week it is hard to trust what Clemson is bringing to the table. As much as I want to give all credit to the GT defense, Clemson looked lost and confused on offense. NC State is a pretty good team getting a struggling Clemson team at home. This is fertile grounds to grow an upset. That said, Clemson is still Clemson and bad things happen to NC State. I expect Clemson to bounce back this week and take this game.

Logan’s pick: Clemson

#24 UCLA Bruins (-4.5) @ Stanford Cardinals

Logan: Stanford shocked everyone a few weeks ago by absolutely dominating USC. UCLA shocked everyone last week by losing to Fresno State in a close game. I am not a night owl so I cannot claim that I stay up all night to watch every game on the west coast. This might be the reason I keep underestimating the Cardinals. Well not this time. This is probably more of a gut pick, but I’ll take Stanford to cover.

Logan’s pick: Stanford Covers

#25 Kansas State Wildcats @ Oklahoma State Cowboys (-6)

Logan: Kansas State is so sneaky. They’re a team you just don’t think about each year, but they tend to have good seasons on the field. Last year was a bit of an anomaly, but this year seems to be coming along well. I expect the Cowboys to win this matchup but I’ll take another pick from the gut and say the Wildcats cover.

Logan’s pick: Wildcats Cover, Oklahoma State Wins

Louisville Cardinals (-1.5) @ Florida State Seminoles

Logan: I believe I said earlier in the season that I don’t know what to think of Florida State. I think I’ve got a pretty good idea of what to think of them now. This pick has nothing to do with Louisville (despite a good win last week against UCF) and everything to do with what I’ve seen from FSU.

Logan’s pick: Louisville

Wake Forest Demon Deacons @ Virginia Cavaliers (-4)

Logan: Despite being at the bottom of our list this game is actually on Friday night. I’m not entirely sure why Virginia is so favored in this matchup. I think Virginia does matchup well against Wake Forest, but ESPN has the Cavs marked at a 70.3% chance of winning the matchup, which seems awfully high to me. Maybe I’m just too much of a fan of the Claw-fence. Wake Forest covers, that’s my pick.

Logan’s pick: Wake Forest covers

#12 Notre Dame Fighting Irish @ #18 Wisconsin Badgers (-6.5)

Logan: Fox (the TV network) has had some good matchups this year... especially for upsets. Ohio State losing to Oregon and the Wisconsin loss to Penn State were both on Fox. Even games like Illinois beating Nebraska and UCLA beating LSU were covered on Fox. It seems weird to pick the results of a game based on the network covering it, but that’s just the kind of insanity I bring to the table. I was going to pick the Badgers, but seeing as they’re favored going into this matchup on Fox I now know I must go with the upset and pick the Irish. So there you go, Irish win this one.

Logan’s pick: Notre Dame
