RECAP: Georgia Tech blows 10-point lead in the fourth, South Florida wins 49-38

Well, this was a bit rough.

I really didn’t want to write this recap. That game hurt to watch, and I know that we’re all frustrated now, but we’re going to try get through this.

I don’t really need to recap what just happened. If you didn’t watch it, do yourself a favor and don’t. We’ll just talk about what we learned.

What did we learn today?

1. Our kickoff coverage was atrocious to start the game.

I don’t think I need to say too much about this. South Florida scored touchdowns on back-to-back kickoffs. The Bulls might have had a track runner back there, but as a kickoff unit, you have to do better.

2. Like I said last week, the defense is not an overnight fix.

I said it last week, and I may end up saying it every week. The defense isn’t going to get better overnight. Is it better than last season? While it may not have looked like it today, I would argue yes, it is better. And noticeably, at that. The defense did a good job of being opportunistic at times, and didn’t fold at the end of the first half, or on the fourth down stop at the goal line.

3. Tobias Oliver is a good back-up option.

Tobias Oliver is a bad man. After TaQuon Marshall went out with an injury, Oliver came in at quarterback and did a serviceable job, leading the offense to three scoring drives using a similar game plan to the one that Tech used against Virginia Tech with Matthew Jordan as its starter. And it worked. Really, really well. He finished with a team-high 18 carries for 97 yards and three touchdowns.

4. Penalties and turnovers lose a game for you.

Eight penalties for 88 yards and three turnovers. You don’t win a game with that. Enough said.

5. Clinton Lynch is healthy and looks great.

My president! One of the bright spots of this game, Lynch caught three passes for a whopping 111 yards and a touchdown. This man is healthy and back. Also want to give a quick shout-out to Qua Searcy who, despite his fumble, played very well today, finishing with 91 total yards and some really good blocking.

I know you’re angry. This was a frustrating game to watch. That being said, we’re only a couple games into the season, and I saw plenty of good things today, not to slight the bad stuff, because there was plenty of that too. We were all concerned about the offense last week, so they came out and put up nearly 40 points with over 600 yards. The season’s not over, so take a breather. Get the venting off your chest over here in the NSFW post-gamethread, and let’s get ready for Pitt next week.
