Georgia Tech Football: 2015 Jackets in the NFL - Week 1

New, 4 comments

The NFL Season has officially started, so let's see what our former players are up to.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

T.J. Barnes, DT, New York Jets (2008-2012)

The New York Jets won this week 31-10 over the Cleveland Browns. T.J. Barnes did his part to help by getting two tackles against the Browns in the rotation at nose tackle.

Mario Butler, CB, Buffalo Bills (2007-2009)

The Buffalo Bills won this week 27-14 over the Indianapolis Colts. Mario Butler only played for a little bit in relief, but was still able to register a tackle.

Andrew Gardner, OT, Philadelphia Eagles (2005-2008)

Andrew Gardner started at right guard this week in the Philadelphia Eagles' 26-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Behind Gardner and the rest of the offensive line, the Eagles' offense accounted for nearly 400 yards of offense, but star running back Demarco Murray only gained nine rushing yards on eight carries. What was really unfortunate was that Sam Bradford still played well enough for my fantasy team to one point.

Calvin Johnson, WR, Detroit Lions (2004-2006)

The Detroit Lions lost in Week 1 to the San Diego Chargers 33-28. Clearly, they didn't throw it to Calvin Johnson enough, because he only had two catches for 39 yards.

Michael Johnson, DE, Cincinnati Bengals (2005-2008)

The Cincinnati Bengals won 33-13 over the Oakland Raiders in Week 1. Michael Johnson helped out by getting a tackle in his first game back with the Bengals.

Shaquille Mason, OG, New England Patriots (2011-2014)

In just his rookie season, former All-American Shaq Mason received significant playing time as the New England Patriots beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 28-21 in the opening game of the season.

Derrick Morgan, OLB, Tennessee Titans (2007-2009)

Fresh off of a contract extension, Derrick Morgan and the Tennessee Titans pretty much completely destroyed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 42-14 (but of course, I had Bishop Sankey on my bench). Morgan definitely had the best week of Tech alumni, finishing the game with five tackles and 2.0 sacks

Daryl Smith, LB, Baltimore Ravens (2000-2003)

The Baltimore Ravens lost 19-13 to the Denver Broncos to begin the season. Daryl Smith continued to be a key cog in the Ravens' defense, accounting for six tackles and defending two passes.

Demaryius Thomas, WR, Denver Broncos (2006-2008)

On the other side of that game, the Broncos won and Demaryius Thomas had a decent day, catching seven passes, but only gaining 60 yards.

Vance Walker, DE, Denver Broncos (2005-2008)

On the defensive side of the ball, Vance Walker started at defensive end in the Broncos' 3-4 defense and registered three tackles in the win.

Darren Waller, WR, Baltimore Ravens (2011-2014)

Darren Waller played in the loss, but didn't accumulate any stats.

Did Not Play

In Week 1, the Yellow Jackets had two players on active rosters that didn't play this week. First up is Jeremiah (Jerry) Attaochu, OLB for the San Diego Chargers. After being listed as questionable for this week's game against the Detroit Lions, Attaochu was held out. The Chargers would go on to win the game 33-28.

The other player who sat out this week was Morgan Burnett, S for the Green Bay Packers. Burnett was held out of practice all week with a calf injury, Burnett was also held out of the game against the Chicago Bears, which they won 31-23.

Stephen Hill, WR for the Carolina Panthers, was placed on the IR prior to the start of the season. And DeAndre Smelter, WR for the San Francisco 49ers, was placed on the Non-Football Injury Reserve prior to the season.
