  • Surprisingly the onside kick wasn't even a top 10 play in the game. Overcoming a small deficit with that little time left is still very unlikely.
  • That third quarter was just brutal. We had about a 62% chance of winning at half time and ended the third quarter 5 plays away from having a 5% chance of winning.
  • We hit some big plays in this game to keep it close but we consistently had possessions that actually decreased our chance of winning the game.

  • I'll start with some positives. We did a much better job than we have been all year on moving the chains on 3rd down. I'm pretty sure 46% is the highest I've seen our 3rd down success rate all year. We had a 50% success rate running the ball and a 51% success rate on standard downs which should set up our offense to consistently move the ball. We also started out hot, gaining 9 yards per play in the 1st quarter.
  • But, there are a log of negatives on here. 2 turnovers isn't awful but without them we probably win this game. We only had 1 methodical drive (10+ plays) and only 1 explosive drive (10 yards/play) in the game.
  • On defense we allowed a 57% success rate on rushing plays and a 50% success rate on passing plays. We didn't allow many big plays but it didn't matter: UVA was just able to work the ball down the field with ease.

  • Our offense hit such a funk after our second touchdown. Our drives following that went punt, fumble, punt, turnover on downs, turnover on downs, and then finally a touchdown to get within a score. I hope someone can tell you why we all the sudden started sucking because I can't.
There really isn't much else to say. When your offense turns the ball over twice and your defense can't stop the opposing team from moving the ball down the field you probably won't have a chance to win a lot of games comfortably. We aren't playing *bad* in the sense that we are getting blown out by teams on our level, but you can't expect to avoid these close games were it's basically luck on who comes out ahead.
