Football: Depth Chart & Injury Report vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

Georgia Tech is starting a whole bunch of freshmen against Virginia Tech on Thursday. What could go wrong?

Injury Report

Position Player Status
AB Broderick Snoddy (R-Sr) Active
OL Shamire Devine (R-So) Probable (Undisclosed)
DL Jabari Hunt (R-Sr) Out (Suspended)
DB A.J. Gray (Fr) Out (Undisclosed)
AB Qua Searcy (R-Fr) Out (Ankle)
QB Tim Byerly (R-Sr) Out for Season (Knee)
BB C.J. Leggett (R-Fr) Out for Season (Knee)
AB Nathan Cottrell (Fr) Out for Season (Knee)
AB KirVonte Benson (Fr) Out for Season (Knee)
OT Chris Griffin (R-So) Out for Season (Knee)
DL Adam Gotsis (Sr) Out for Season (Knee)
LB Beau Hankins (R-Jr) Career Ended (Concussions)

Though a lot of the minor injuries likely benefited from time to heal during the bye week, several situations did not. Obviously Adam Gotsis has been added to this list, but the other notable injury is that of A.J. Gray, who will miss a second straight game after leaving the Florida State game with an injury. Hopefully his situation improves and he's able to play again this season.

Of note: Georgia Tech will be without 10 scholarship players in this game, and that's not even counting Micheal Summers.

Offense

Position First String Second String
QB Justin Thomas (R-Jr) Matthew Jordan (R-Fr)
Chase Martenson (R-Fr)
BB Patrick Skov (R-Sr)
Marcus Marshall (Fr)
Marcus Allen (R-Jr)
AB Clinton Lynch (R-Fr) Isaiah Willis (R-Jr)
Lynn Griffin (R-Jr)
AB Mikell Lands-Davis (Fr) TaQuon Marshall (Fr)
Austin McClellan (R-Jr)
WR Ricky Jeune (R-So) Brandon Oliver (R-Sr)
Harland Howell (Fr)
WR Brad Stewart (Fr) Antonio Messick (R-So)
LT Trey Klock (R-Fr) Bryan Chamberlain (R-Sr)
LG Trey Braun (R-Sr) Gary Brown (R-Fr)
C Freddie Burden (R-Jr) Andrew Marshall (So)
RG Errin Joe (R-Sr) Shamire Devine (R-So)
RT Will Bryan (Fr) Eason Fromayan (R-So)

The offensive line continues to shuffle a bit this week, with Trey Klock moving from guard to tackle, where he'll start in place of Bryan Chamberlain. Errin Joe also retains his starting status at right guard, in place of an ineffective Shamire Devine. Brad Stewart also steps in to start for the departed Summers at wide receiver.

Of note: depending on which B-Back goes into the huddle for the first play of the game, Georgia Tech will be starting 6 freshmen on offense, and 4 of them are true freshmen. They'll be doing this against Bud Foster's defense.

Defense

Position First String Second String
WDE KeShun Freeman (So) Anree Saint-Amour (Fr)
DT Patrick Gamble (R-Jr) Francis Kallon (R-Jr)
NT Kyle Cerge-Henderson (Fr) Francis Kallon (R-Jr)
SDE Rod Rook-Chungong (R-Jr) Tyler Stargel (R-Jr)
Antonio Simmons (So)
LB Tyler Marcordes (R-Sr) Brant Mitchell (Fr)
Victor Alexander (Fr)
LB P.J. Davis (Jr) Domonique Noble (R-Sr)
LB (4-3) Brant Mitchell (Fr) Chase Alford (Jr)
Nickel Lawrence Austin (So) Demond Smith (R-Sr)
CB Chris Milton (R-Sr) Lance Austin (So)
SS Jamal Golden (R-Sr) Corey Griffin (R-So)
Shaun Kagawa (So)
FS Demond Smith (R-Sr) A.J. Gray (Fr)
CB D.J. White (Sr) Step Durham (So)

With Gotsis out for the year and Jabari Hunt still suspended, Patrick Gamble gets the call at defensive tackle, where he'll start next to true freshman Kyle Cerge-Henderson. The coaches are likely trying to avoid burning any more redshirts this week, but in the case of an injury their hand may be forced. The interior of the defensive line is getting dangerously thin.

Special Teams

Position First String Second String
K Harrison Butker (Jr) Shaun Davis (Fr)
P Ryan Rodwell (R-Jr) Shaun Davis (Fr)
LS Casey Wilson (R-Fr) Sean Tobin (R-Sr)
H Ryan Rodwell (R-Jr) ----
KR/PR Jamal Golden (R-Sr) Brad Stewart (Fr)

No changes here, although there's a chance that Brad Stewart's role as backup returner changes now that he's a starter at wide receiver. They've played several players at kick returner all year, so I wouldn't read too far into this part of the depth chart.
