The Jackets met the Eagles for the second time this season in a make up game last night at 5pm at McCamish Pavilion. Coming as no surprise was the performance that Olivier Hanlan produced throughout the game, especially a go ahead 3-pointer with three seconds remaining to put the Eagles up 1. Unlike the ACC Championship where the Jackets had no response for Hanlan's 41 point presence, Marcus Georges-Hunt responded with a go ahead 3 pointer "and one" with less than a second remaining to seal a win for the home team.
This victory is the fourth ACC win for the worn out Jackets team. Without their star point guard Trae Golden; Marcus Georges-Hunt, Daniel Miller and Robert Carter Jr. stepped up to the challenge and brought home a "W" at McCamish Pavilion. Miller gave the Jackets 18 points, with Holsey providing 15, Georges-Hunt with 15 and Carter Jr. with 10. This was a huge aide to the team as Trae Golden sat the bench with a groin injury after putting up a career high 24 points away at Boston College earlier this season.
The game was intense and close for all 40 minutes. Many commented that the Jackets were not playing well, as they trailed closely for most of the game. Most of the poor performance was in the first half, as the Jackets shot 77.8% from the field in the second half and 53.8% for the game. Similar to many other games this season, I was impressed with the way that the players responded to adversity throughout the game. Brian Gregory has found a way to get this young, beat up team to still win games.
This win is a big one for the Jackets as it puts them above .500 on the season at 13-12 (4-8 ACC). Unfortunately, this season has not been what many had hoped for, yet you have to take the bad with the good. I am very happy with the way this program is developing.
Next, the Jackets face Duke and Clemson at home for two key ACC match ups. Hopefully players can heal and get ready to compete next week.
Edited: "Needless to say it's been an interesting season."-Gregory
