The weather was perfect for the second day in a row at Russ Chandler Stadium, and the Joltin' Jackets took it to heart. Tech (17-2, 5-1) went .400 at the plate to score nine runs and leave a hapless Boston College (3-15, 0-6) team in the dust, all while cute children wearing green brightened up the Rusty C. The Tech baseball staff really did a good job planning the family day that came with the favorable weather: a youngster threw out the first pitch and announced the Tech players as they came up to bat one inning, and the kids got to run the bases after the game. It was the kind of genuine cuteness you really only see in internet pictures of cats anymore and was a refreshing change of pace. On the field, however, no such change of pace took place, and the hardball Jackets went on to sweep their first ACC series since 2011.
Again having an active day with the sticks; Tech had 14 hits in 35 at-bats. The scoring was fairly concentrated with six of nine runs coming from the 2-5 slots in the order in GT's last two innings. Zane Evans extended his RBI streak to three games, getting nine on the weekend. Brandon Thomas also had a fun day at the plate going 3-5 and getting one of the team's five extra-base hits. There wasn't much really wrong with today's performance. Even Tech's lone error was a mis-score in my opinion. It was given when a grounder took a bad bounce on A.J. Murray and he missed it, allowing the runner to advance to first safely.
The Diamond Jacket's pitching staff also put on a show against the struggling Eagles. Cole Pitts had a great showing and finished with a impressive line: 6.2IP, 3H, 1R, 0ER, 3BB, 4K after 93 pitches. He has a 2.17 ERA right now through 29IP, though we haven't gotten into the meat of the ACC schedule so that might go up. In 2012 Pitts had a 4.26ERA through 31.2IP so he's definitely improved. If we revisit him in a month and his ERA's still around there we'll know we have Buck Farmer's successor on our hands.
Tech takes on Georgia Southern on Tuesday at 6PM and I'll be there. I'm assuming most of you are sitting on a beach somewhere right now on spring break, and I'd just like you to know how jealous I am of you.
