Jackets Soar Above Eagles, Win 12-5

Georgia Tech Baseball (15-2, 3-1) beat the fledgling Boston College Eagles (3-13, 0-5) in sturdy fashion at the Rusty C on Friday night. Georgia Tech continued its nearly uninterrupted streak of scoring ten runs or more, going for double digits in 10 for the last 11. It was a routine night for a Georgia Tech team that has had little trouble with most of its opponents this year. The only anomaly was that Tech starter Buck Farmer gave up an unusual number of runs in this game, with here "an unusual number" meaning "more than one." But seriously folks, Buck Farmer gave up more than one run for the first time in his five appearances, and that's nothing to shake a stick at.

The game was hard-fought from the beginning. Tech and BC essentially played "hot potato" with the lead the whole time, with Georgia Tech gaining the game's final lead in the seventh. The scoring started with a Boston College RBI in the first by Logan Hoggarth on a fielder's choice, followed by another BC run in the second courtesy of a Joe Cronin RBI double. Tech responded quickly; the Jackets again small-balled their way around the world off of three singles in four batters to make it 2-1 heading into the third. That's when a Brandon Thomas fired the "shot that was heard 'round the block, maybe," and dropped a solo shot just over the fence to tie the game at two. After either team filed no requests to the scoring committee in the fourth, Zane Evans showed up to the office asking that two runs be approved by virtue of his seventh home run this season, this one coming courtesy of BC starter Eric Stevens. The Eagles took the lead from the Jackets in the top of the sixth when they scored three runs to make it 5-4, but in the bottom of the inning the Ramblin' Reck took the lead for good with a Sam Dove double that plated Daniel Spingola, and a Daniel Palka single to plate Dove. After that, Tech would rack up 6 more runs thanks to a Spingola RBI single and a Kyle Wren sac fly, followed by some patient hitting that saw them draw four walks in their last frame to go along with two hits. Throw in a wild pitch that brought Mott Hyde home and you've got yourself a 12-5 victory in the series opener for the Jackets.

Tomorrow's game starts at 4:00 at Russ Chandler Stadium, as Dusty Isaacs looks for his third win of the year against Boston College's sophomore right-hander John Gorman.
