Georgia Tech went on an 11-0 run leading into halftime to take a 13-point lead. Kowacie Reeves then hit a three right out of halftime. Then BC went on a 12-0 run and took the lead with 9 minutes left. Georgia Tech had one more run, but with three minutes there was a 12-second stretch where GT got a flagrant and a technical foul (on Damon Stoudamire).
Once again Georgia Tech had no answers on defense. That is becoming a serious issue for this team. It helped that BC was on fire from deep, but they were getting a whole lot of good shots. GT wasn’t giving up easy shots in transition either. It was largely in the half court that BC did their damage. There were some lapses of concentration and miscommunications which hurt. But ultimately they gotta get better at staying in front of their man. Kyle Sturdivant and Miles Kelly both cited the defensive failures in the second half as the main cause of the loss.
GT was lead in the first half by Baye Ndongo and Kowacie Reeves. Ndongo added to his usual repertoire with a series of mid-range jumpers and even a three pointer. He finished with 18 points on 8/14 shooting and 10 boards. Unfortunately he was 1/5 from the line. Kowacie Reeves got on fire from three shooting 4/6 on his way 17 points on just 6/9 shooting. But both somewhat disappeared in the second half. Kyle Sturdivant also had a solid game and came up just short of the triple double finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds, and 9 assists. Miles Kelly’s struggles continued. He finished with 12 points on 5/10 shooting, but he had 5 turnovers including the aforementioned flagrant foul when he got tangled up with a BC defender.
Damon Stoudamire was frustrated near the end of the game with a series of calls that went BCs way (including the questionable flagrant foul). He got a technical foul for yelling at a ref that basically ended the Yellow Jackets’ chances of winning the game.
On Tuesday Georgia Tech welcomes Notre Dame to McCamish at 9 pm. Notre Dame has struggled this year, but have played a lot better in the last couple of games. The Yellow Jackets need this win to get some momentum going into their next two games at Duke and Clemson.
