Merry Christmas y’all! I spent several hours sitting in holiday traffic on Saturday, but it was all worth it because your 2023 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are Gasparilla Bowl champions and have finished their season with a winning record. Watching all the UCF fans vacate the stadium with five minutes left brought me so much joy.
Game Recap in Three Sentences
The early goings were a bit rough, but Tech turned things around with 27 unanswered points starting in the second quarter.
The defense locked down the high-scoring UCF offense, allowing just 114 second half yards and making a big fourth down stop late.
Game MVP Jamal Haynes got the run game going in the second quarter and didn’t slow down en route to 128 total yards.
Above The Line of the Week
- Dontae Smith, take a bow. He finished his long Tech career on a high note with 65 yards and a score.
- Haynes King. He didn’t have his best statline in this one, but his two total TDs broke Joe Hamilton’s record for most TDs responsible for in a season.
- The defense. They’ve been criticized a lot this season, but they really stepped up in this one against a strong offense and played superbly.
Unformed Thought of the Week
Brent Backwards-hat-friendship-bracelet-mardi-gras-beads-we’re-a-CocaCola-school-TO-HELL-WITH-GEORGIA-straight-into-the-mic Key now has more wins as a HC at Tech than Geoff Collins. Poetically accomplished against the very team that got Collins fired.

A Team That Just Wins
There’s something to be said for a team that just finds a way.
Star QB has an off night? Fine, let’s run ‘em to death. Defense gets beat a couple times early? No problem, we’ll figure it out and force some turnovers. Get hosed on a bad turnover call? Sure thing, get a sack and then score on the next drive. Don’t get too down, keep your foot on the pedal.
There’s a laundry list of things I’d like to see us get better at physically, but this team seems to be nailing the mental side of the game right now. Credit to Key for actually installing a winning culture instead of just talking about it. Seeing a team compete like this is a breath of fresh air and a far cry from some of the performances we’ve seen in previous years. We can fix the fixable things, but the culture is firing on all cylinders right now.
I’m beginning to trust Georgia Tech football again. They’ve got a while to go before they have my full trust, but I’m beginning to believe that this team can compete with anyone. A winning season, solid young talent, and a great recruiting class all point towards things being right on the Flats.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Go F****** Jackets.
