There has been plenty of news as of late, football related and non-football related, so before getting into the first of today’s Tidbits, I wanted to mention some of those items. First and foremost, congratulations to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets women’s tennis team. They had quite the showing at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic. This article breaks down some of the key details. Impressively, four Yellow Jackets finished the tournament undefeated.
In other Tech news, the Yellow Jackets softball team announced their fall 2021 exhibition schedule. Details can be found here. Finally, the kickoff time for the Pitt game has been set. Details are available here. The Pitt game is one I’ve been anxiously awaiting and I have a feeling so has head coach Geoff Collins and the rest of the team. Should be a good one.
The title for the first article featured in today’s Tidbits really grabbed my eye. Comparing Tech’s performance to a storm that Clemson had to face was a pleasing analogy. Of course, the result of the game wasn’t what the Yellow Jackets hoped for, but coming up just 6 points short is nothing to be ashamed of against the 6th ranked team in the country. Granted, the Tigers are a team that has a lot of issues and their 6th place ranking may not be quite justified given their performance in the last couple of games.
Despite all of the noise, what matters is the Yellow Jackets put up a heck of a fight in a game against a far superior team. Being able to perform at that level under the intense pressure of playing in hostile territory like Death Valley is not to be taken for granted. If anything, the upcoming UNC game will be a better gauge of just where this team is, but in my opinion, the results of last week’s Clemson game was plenty enough to show what this team is capable of.
Honestly, I believe this is the first KQ article I’ve included in the Tidbits though I may be mistaken. The NIL deal makes for a very interesting topic, so I was definitely inclined to include it and the article does a good job of pointing out some details about how NIL works that I wasn’t aware of.
Tech pairing up with Tivo for the largest NIL deal to date was definitely intriguing. But for me, the big takeaway was the aforementioned details. Specifically, how Tech has to field interest from outlets who may be pursuing potential deals with the school or its athletes and cannot approach them for a deal. Regardless of how it works, Tech did come out fairly well gaining $100K in investments for the program. Not too bad at all. At the end of the day, I think NIL could be a good thing for college sports and student athletes, especially if it can even help out some of the non-scholarship athletes as well.
