At Georgia Tech, athletics are important, but what really matters most is success in the classroom. Clearly, Yellow Jacket student-athletes are succeeding off the field, with an average GPA for the 2021 spring semester of 3.10. For this to be the mean at an institution as difficult and trying as Georgia Tech speaks to the well-roundedness of the student-athletes and the work that GTAA does to support them in all facets of life. The women’s swim and dive team was especially impressive, with a 3.64 team GPA. The baseball team lead the men with a 3.43 team GPA. These statistics are incredible, and the grades are certainly precursors to success in life. Keep it up, Jackets!
Emma Kauf is one of the best softball players to attend Georgia Tech in a very long time. Her first season brought her ACC All-Freshman Team honors and All-ACC First Team recognition. In short, she was pretty darn good. Kauf’s abilities have allowed her to be selected as a player on the, “Sugar Land roster of Team Alliance as part of USA Softball’s 2021 “Stand Beside Her” tour, presented by Major League Baseball.” Kauf will play this weekend in two doubleheaders against Team USA beginning on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. Being selected for these games is a huge recognition of her talent and dedication as a softball player. Congratulations, Emma!
It’s academic data release season for the ACC, it seems. Along with team GPA data, it was announced yesterday that two Yellow Jackets, Julia Bergmann and Matti McKissock, were recognized as part of the All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team. This is a huge honor for both of them, and demonstrates their well-roundedness. Both women were huge contributors on a NCAA Tournament second-round team, and were also strong leaders for the Jackets throughout the season. It’s great to see both Julia and Matti’s hard work on and off the court getting recognized. Congratulations!
If you thought that the academic news was over, you were wrong. Joining Julia and Matti on All-ACC Academic teams is Tech golfer Connor Howe. This is the junior’s first academic team appearance, he carried a 3.34 GPA during this year’s fall and spring semesters. Howe recently finished ninth at the ACC Championships, and is looking to have a successful summer on the amateur circuit. Congratulations, Connor!
At the time of publishing, the 121st U.S. Open’s first round was suspended after multiple fog delays on Thursday morning. All three former Yellow Jackets had finished their rounds, however, and two are sitting in a decent position to make the cut. Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar both are currently +2 (T61), while Tyler Strafaci is +7 (T146). It’s a tough course, so anything can happen today as players fight to make the weekend.
Question of the Day: Did you watch any of the U.S. Open?
