Technical Tidbits 5/3: Georgia Tech Football has a successful NFL draft

The Jacksonville Jaguars must like drafting Georgia Tech pass catchers, because Jalen Camp is the second in two years to be scooped up by the team in the NFL Draft. Camp follows former Tech TE Tyler Davis, who played sparingly during his rookie season. The Cumming, GA native was taken as pick 209 in the draft, and is the second draftee during Geoff Collins’ time with the Jackets. Camp is a physical, athletic receiver that impresses many with his raw strength. He should be able to compete for a roster spot in Jacksonville. Congratulations, Jalen!

The third Yellow Jacket drafted during Geoff Collins’ tenure came just hours later with Pressley Harvin III’s selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Harvin was picked up with just six selections remaining in the draft, so luckily there was a team looking for a punter with a lot of potential. Although, as Ray Guy Award winner, there is a massive track record of success that Harvin leaves behind in Atlanta. He has a terrific history kicking bombs (and throwing touchdowns), and his field-flipping ability will be difficult to replace on the Flats. It’s always great when a player who truly deserves it gets their named called in the draft. Congratulations, Pressley!

While not drafted, two other former Yellow Jackets had a great weekend after getting picked up by NFL teams. Team leader and LB David Curry signed an UDFA deal with the Denver Broncos. Curry is the epitome of a team-first player who will do anything to ensure the success of everyone around him. Special teams stud Jaytlin Askew was also picked up by a NFL team: the Miami Dolphins. Askew did wonders on the punt coverage squad as a gunner and has great athletic instincts. As the article above points out, Askew is following in the footsteps of current Jaguars special teams player Nathan Cottrell, who was a gunner with the Jackets and played his way into a NFL roster spot.

With four players headed to the NFL, it was only right for Geoff Collins & co. to bring in a recruit for the 2022 class. And, the coaching staff made a splash with this commitment: Jaron Willis. The OLB from Lee County High School (GA) is 247Sports Composite’s no. 150 player in the nation and the no. 17 prospect in the state of Georgia. Willis carries a 5.8 Rivals rating and a 0.9393 247 composite. He’s currently Tech’s highest-rated recruit in the 2022 class. This is a big in-state get for the Jackets, welcome to the Flats, Jaron!
