Georgia Tech slight favorites to defeat Virginia Tech

It's been quite the up and down season for the Yellow Jackets. It started with a loss to Northern Illinois, but then they took Clemson to the limit and defeated North Carolina. Then they followed that by losing two of their next three games.

That said, Georgia Tech has been competitive in almost every game they've played this year. They may be 3-4, but they've only lost 1 game this year by more than 1 score. Now they get ready to take on Virginia Tech, a team that's had a similarly strange season.

Virginia Tech has lost their last 3 games though, and that's enough for them to be underdogs headed into this one.

Odds

Oddsmakers like Georgia Tech in this one. The Yellow Jackets are 4 point favorites, and they're given -175 odds to win the game outright. That's an implied 63.6% chance to win the game. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech was given +165 odds, or an implied 37.7% chance to pull off the upset.

Matchup History

Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech have played each other 17 times in their history. Georgia Tech has won 7 of those games.

That said, recent history has been on the Yellow Jackets' side. They've won 3 of the last 4 and 4 of the last 6 games that these two have played.

Their game in 2019 was pretty, as Georgia Tech lost 45-0, but Georgia Tech won 49-28 in 2018. So, as badly as they lost in 2019, it does seem momentum is on the Yellow Jackets' side.

Conclusion

Georgia Tech is fighting for their bowl game since 2018. They have a real shot at it in a very weak ACC this year. That said, to get to 6 wins they're going to need to win at home against subpar opponents.

Virginia Tech has talent, but as a team on a 3 game losing streak, this is one Georgia Tech should win. If not, it's hard to see them going 3-1 the rest of the way and becoming bowl eligible.
