Virginia scored the lone upset of the week against a UNC team who is having some struggle stopping opposing offenses. Boston College made sure the game with Clemson stayed on the upset tracker but failed to come through in the end. As the season enters the back half of the schedule it looks like we could get the first matchup of Clemson vs Notre Dame before a title matchup. Miami will still get a say though after their bye.
@Clemson 34 Boston College 28
Clemson had to take on Boston College without Trevor Lawrence due to a positive Covid test but it was Clemson’s defense that came out uninspired in the first half. BC scored a touchdown on three of their four possessions and added another score off a Clemson fumble in the red zone. That would be all BC would do though as Clemson’s defense pitched a shut out in the second half. Lawrence’s replacement in DJ Uiagalelei led the comeback with 342 yards passing and two touchdowns.
Wake Forest 38 @Syracuse 14
Syracuse couldn’t get out of their own way as three drives ended in turnovers on the kickoff, first play, and second play of the drive respectively. Wake Forest cashed in on one interception for a touchdown to go along with a nice day from RB Walker who had three rushing touchdowns on the day.
Notre Dame 31 @Georgia Tech 13
In some respects, Georgia Tech didn’t look as bad as it had in the past two weeks but it still didn’t feel like they were ever in contention to win against the Irish. Long drives by Notre Dame ate up most of the clock and kept Tech from ever getting into a rhythm on offense. Ian Book didn’t light up the board with only 199 yards passing but assisted in the 227 rushing yards that wore out the defense.
Virginia Tech 42 @Louisville 35
Louisville could have run away with this game but three interceptions gave the Hokies all they needed to gain an early lead that would be threatened but never relinquished. Hokie QB Hendon Hooker was a perfect 10 for 10 and 183 yards but once again Herbert was a force on the ground with 147 yards. Hooker finished the drives with three rushing touchdowns of his own.
@Duke 53 Charlotte 19
The stunning stat line of this game was even with 53 points, Duke’s Chase Brice only managed 106 yards on 8 completions. The scoring was set up by Duke’s special teams making some nice returns and blocking a punt to set up great field position through the night. Charlotte maned to control the clock a whopping 42 minutes.
@Virginia 44 North Carolina 41
North Carolina is starting to have rough weeks against ACC teams on the bottom of the standings. Virginia notched their second ACC win behind a good day from QB Brennan Armstrong who threw three touchdowns. UNC would match them for most of the night in scoring but logged two turnovers that were the difference in the score, both fumbles.
Clemson & Notre Dame Tier!
Trevor Lawrence may have been out but the defense took a half to get its act together before coming back and putting away Boston College. Notre Dame has taken care of business the past weeks and will get its chance to knock off the Tigers this week with Lawrence still out from Covid. Will we see the Irish claim dominance in their lone conference season?
Coastal Brothers (Miami, Virginia Tech, UNC)
Miami got to take a breather this week before they see NC State and should be the favorite of this group. The Hokies can control a game with their run game but have been a bit leaky on defense at times. UNC suffers the same as VT but should be better than the rest of the ACC most weeks despite being upset twice.
Average Atlantic (Wake Forest, Boston College, NC State)
Wake has been respectable this year with their only losses coming from Clemson and NC State. They should find a few more wins on the schedule to finish right in the middle. Boston did their best to make a mess of the playoff race this year but couldn’t muster any points in the second half against Clemson. They shouldn’t be penalized too much though as their run game has found some life. The Wolf pack had a bye but could improve their lot in life if they can upset Miami coming up.
Not quite good enough to be average but not so bad as to fall into the pit of misery where the rest of the teams reside.
