Georgia Tech Recruiting: TE River Helms Commits

Tech picks up it’s 19th commitment of the cycle.

NCAA Football: Georgia Tech at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

After a much-needed win against Louisville this past Friday the Yellow Jackets picked up a recruiting win with their 19th commitment from a tight end, River Helms. Helms comes from West Limestone in Lester, Alabama. He is listed at 6’4” 225lbs. He does not have a rating from 247 as of now but Rivals grades him out as a high 3-star with a 5.7 grade and the 23rd ranked player at his position. There were no camps or visits this year so ratings could be incomplete but he shot up rather quickly in the Rivals ratings since high school football started. His offer list is pretty extensive and boasts some top programs such as UGA but it appears Tech beat out FSU and UCF as the favorites.

Watching River’s current highlights of his senior season shows he will be a versatile player for Georgia Tech when he arrives on campus. He lines up as an outside receiver quite a bit and shows a decent understanding of running routes. Tight ends aren’t usually the faster runners opting for size dominance in coverage but he has a long stride that makes him faster than some of the players trying to cover him. His Hudl profile shows a 40-yard dash speed of 4.59 which is not bad for his position and size. Most of his blocking highlights come against much smaller opposition but it is good to see him engaging the player till the end of the play.
