Technical Tidbits 7/30: Geoff Collins’ Unique Approach To Uniforms

Several Tech football players will be wearing single-digit uniforms in 2019. Many of these players wore different numbered jerseys last season. Of course, wearing a single-digit number is often a matter of seniority and starting status for many colleges. But I find it interesting how head coach Geoff Collins simply requires a written statement explaining why they want to wear a single-digit number.

In the case of Jalen Camp, he wore the number one as a senior in high school, and he wanted to do the same for his senior year at Tech. Sophomore Juanyeh Thomas is also going to be donning the number one jersey this season, though the article doesn’t go into what his reasoning is. I didn’t realize it until reading this article, but the NCAA allows two players to wear the same number as long as they don’t appear on the field at the same time. (Side note, could this possibly be used as a strategy to confuse one’s opponent?)

For the nine players who will be wearing a single digit jersey, I’m sure there will be some pressure to perform. It should make for an interesting season as we can track their performance. Regardless, they were granted the right to wear these jerseys for a reason, so it’s definitely well-deserved.

Tech’s official site shared this video. I’ve got to say, those practices look to be really challenging and intense, but, more importantly, it appears the players are having a really good time. They’re doing a lot of hard work, but when it’s fun to do so, as it obviously is from the video, it’s a good sign that there is a strong culture being built on The Flats.

The final winner of the Golden Sweepstakes has been announced. The winner will enjoy a ride in the iconic Ramblin’ Reck. If you were hoping to win one of the five prizes from the Golden Sweepstakes but didn’t, I imagine they’ll have a similar sweepstake next season or, who knows, they might have similar contest during this season. We’ll have to see.

We are officially less than a month away from the 2019 season. Who’s excited?
