Yellow Jacket Roundup: Something Old, Something New

New, 1 comment

For those of you who remember last year, it’s time for a similar trip through a summer without sports.

Running! We still have some of that left to do!
Georgia Tech Athletics/Danny Karnik

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - Forgive my holiday absence last week, but with no non-revenue sport action in the meantime, we return to the penultimate edition of Yellow Jacket Roundup with a belated look at golf, a preview of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and an introduction to this summer’s plans for From the Rumble Seat’s premier non-revenue sports column.

Men’s Golf - 18th Place, NCAA Golf National Championship

Since it’s long over, and covered ably by this week’s Technical Tidbits, I’ll spare the more disappointing details, but Georgia Tech failed to make the 54 hole cut at the NCAA Championship and finished in 18th place in the field. It would have taken a 15th place or better finish to live to play another day, and Tech fell shy of that mark by three strokes, after finishing a fair amount above par on their final day of play, odd for a team that is usually quite capable of nailing down birdies on longer holes. However, Tech’s slide out of that top echelon of teams was all but doomed when freshman Connor Howe finished with the best score of the day at a pedestrian 72. Tech, however, for all its troubles, returns its whole starting lineup to the two-time defending ACC championship golf squad. And that sure isn’t the worst place in the world to be, especially compared to flaming out of the Regional three straight years before this. The joy is in the little things. Hopefully they can put it back together for next spring, because they are truly quite a talented team.

This week: The Swingin’ Jackets are at rest until the fall slate opens up in [presumably] September.

Track and Field

National Championship Qualifiers:
Avery Bartlett - 5th place in prelims, Men’s 800m (1:49.39)
Bria Matthews - 8th place in prelims, Women’s Triple Jump (13.25m)
Jeanine Williams - 1st place in prelims, Women’s 100m Hurdles (12.62)
Though Tech had hoped to send more athletes to Austin, the three usual suspects will be representing them in the biggest meet of the year. Williams ran the second-fastest time in the NCAA and the third best in the world to finish first in the preliminary round, and Bartlett is essentially the wizened old man of Tech track with how much experience he has going to these big meets. With only three entires, Tech essentially has no hope for a team trophy, but Williams has always been a credible threat to beat anyone on the planet, and that won’t change one timezone west in Texas this coming weekend.

This week: Tech prepares to head to Austin, Texas for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
