Yellow Jacket Roundup: Half Centuries and Whole Sweeps

Track and Softball and not much else this finals week here on the Flats. But Track did some exceptionally cool stuff.

Softball had a good weekend.

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - Track and Field sent runners to Philadelphia and Syracuse paid softball a visit, but, truly, there wasn’t much else to be said this week about the wide world of non-revenue sports. Read on for the sweep of the Orange and the excellent weekend of running from the track team. I don’t know if this column is the proper space for some highly biased opinions on Sunday’s baseball series finale against Clemson, but, barring any other applicable comment section, feel free to talk about it here.

Softball:

The Jackets got themselves above the 30 win mark for the first time since 2012, when they won 37 before falling first to around .500 for a few years before the bottom fell out. However, after rebounding last year under first-year head coach and former Tech star Aileen Morales, the Jackets have steadily built themselves up, thanks to solid player development and scouting. The Senior Day festivities this weekend were a nice culmination of the last two years of work on the Flats. Taking three against the Orange to break the benchmark is a nice perk.

The first game, Tech and their guests were knotted up going into the bottom of the seventh, before the Jackets were able to punch one last run across, thanks to a walk-off single from Skye Webb. This, of course, after the Jackets let Syracuse back into the game in the top of the fifth, though solid defense complemented some timely hitting and Webb was able to put the winning across for Tech.

In the second game, Tech and Syracuse again played a back-and-forth game decided by one run. Syracuse got on the board first, before Tech took two, but then they quickly got the lead back on a three run home run. Tech again was able to tie the game before giving up another run. Again, Tech took the lead, before Syracuse tied it again. Once again, the Jackets scored one in the bottom of the seventh with a single from Cameron Stanford to win on Senior Day.

On Sunday, Tech didn’t play around, run-ruling Syracuse 9-1 in five innings. The first truly one-sided game they’ve played in a while saw Tricia Awald push five runners across home plate on a double and a home run. The Jackets scored in all four innings, and Naomi Dickerson had a day for herself on the mound, limiting not only hits and runs, but solid contact as well. All in all, a solid and needed weekend for the Jackets before they hit the road to end regular season play and head to beautiful, breezy Tallahassee for the ACC Tournament.

This week: Softball closes out the regular season with a post-finals week trip to South Bend, Indiana and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Track and Field:

Hana Herndon broke the women’s 5k record at the Penn Relays, while Tyson Spears, Maurice Simpson, Ryan Thomas, and Daniel Pietsch took down the 4x100 relay record in Athens. Combined, the two now-broken records had stood for just shy of a half century. On that alone, it would be called a great weekend, but track had one of their best weekends of the season, seeing a handful of personal bests, some NCAA Preliminary qualifiers, and a bevy of top-ten finishes at both competitions.

This week: Track is at rest this week.
