Yellow Jacket Roundup: Has a Rough Week

Looking like a WNIT bid for the ladies.

Shot went in but Tech still fell in Greensboro.
Georgia Tech Athletics

ATLANTA, GEORGIA - With memories of the eight game win streak fast fading into the distance, softball picks up one game while Tech women’s basketball continues its skid to end the season.

No. 4 Men’s Golf

Tech led all week before slipping all the way to sixth with a seven over par showing on the final day of competition. Andy Ogletree, however, finished in the top ten yet again as Tech golf continues to work out the kinks on a very strong team.

This week: Golf heads to Florida for their annual run at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational.

Softball

Tuesday, March 5th: Georgia Tech (14 - 7) loses a heartbreaker to Jacksonville State (9 - 4), 4-3.

Wednesday, March 6th: Georgia Tech (14 - 8) falls badly to the school in Athens (19 - 2), 16-4.

Friday, March 8th: Georgia Tech (14 - 9) loses the opener to VPISU (17 - 3), 5-1.

Saturday, March 9th: Georgia Tech (15 - 9) tops VPISU (17 - 4), 10-7.

Sunday, March 10th: Georgia Tech (15 - 10) loses late to VPISU (18 - 4), 5-4.

The Jackets had a chance to extend their winning streak to nine games against Jacksonville State, only to lose a 3-0 lead late to the Gamecocks. One run turned to three more in the next inning, the sixth, as Tech ultimately allowed four unanswered runs after jumping out to a little lead. Tech loaded the bases in the sixth, and Cameron Stanford, with two on and two out and a full count laced a rocket to left field, to just ever so slightly go foul, before sending one deep, but not deep enough, to center and the Jackets fell at home.

The next night wasn’t so pretty for Tech, as the school out east basically had their way with the hosts. The Athenians jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Tech even batted, though Tech attempted to make it a game by tacking on four runs a few innings later. That was pretty much all she wrote at the plate, though, and the guests took the game by a twelve run margin.

Tech headed out on the road for the weekend series, opening ACC play with a 1-2 showing in Blacksburg. Tech fell 5-1 in the opener, as a costly error led to two unearned runs and Tech left ten runners on base. Yikes. The second day was kinder for the Jackets, and they split the remaining games with the Hokies. Sidenote: what’s a Hokie, anyways? In the first game, Tech finally capitalized on some runners on base and got a solid win, while in the second game, the Jackets took a 4-2 lead late on another mammoth Katie Krzus home run. What a fantastic senior season for her, by the way, as she was hitting with poise even before a solid road weekend. However, it wasn’t enough, as VPISU would tie the game in the sixth before winning in their half of the seventh.

This week: Tech gets Mercer in the midweek and Virginia back at home.

No. 32 Women’s Tennis

Sweep or be swept! My favorite thing. Anyways, Tech started the weekend with a tough loss to a good Wake Forest team on the road, before blanking Louisville. The Jackets have settled into a more consistent and respectable rut after falling straight out of the stratosphere after last year’s wonderful run to the final four.

This week: Back to home for a game on Friday.

Women’s Basketball

Thursday, March 7th: Georgia Tech (17 - 14) falls to North Carolina (18 - 13), 80-73.

Tech couldn’t get it done despite holding a lead most of the game. Foul trouble sank ACC Freshman of the Year Elizabeth Balogun and this team really doesn’t look like the same team it was a month ago, which is tragic. Luckily, they’ll likely at least get something else to play for in the postseason as their resume, including multiple top-25 upsets, more than deserves a chance at another trip to the WNIT title game.

This week: Probably the WNIT soon.

Track and Field

Bria Matthews and Jeanine Williams went to Birmingham for NCAAs this weekend, a slightly smaller crew than usual for the Track and Field team. Anyways, Williams netted herself 15th in the hurdles and Matthews is Tech’s latest All-American after her fifth place performance in the Triple Jump. Congrats, Bria!

This week: Tech hosts their first outdoor meet on the George C. Griffin Track.
