Georgia Tech will make the journey through the vast nothingness of central Georgia this evening for a weekday matchup with the Georgia Southern Eagles, one of very few in-state rivals against whom the Jackets have had any significant luck over the past few seasons.
Sophomore lefthander Brant Hurter is expected to get the start for the Jackets. The Canton native held down the midweek starting role for the team last season with mixed results but logged a strong inning on Friday night against UIC, allowed just a walk while striking out three in a scoreless frame.
He will face off against Georgia Southern’s Joe Nahas, a junior JUCO transfer who landed in Statesboro after stints at UMBC and Chesapeake College. He was a strikeout machine in junior college last season, striking out 142 batters in 73.2 innings on his way to compiling a 10-1 overall record and 3.18 ERA. His first career appearance for the Eagles came over the weekend versus Auburn, where he struck out 3 and walked 2 over 4 innings of 1-run work.
Southern had an overall successful weekend in their own right, claiming one of three against No. 22 Auburn on the road and just barely losing game three in 13 innings. They are a solid team and will push Tech to the ropes if we can’t get either a strong start from Hurter or a much-improved offensive performance over what we saw at times this past weekend.
First pitch is scheduled for 6pm. You can listen to the game on WREK 91.1 or watch on ESPN+.
