Georgia Tech had nobody taken in this year’s NFL draft, but several players signed deals or got tryouts soon after the draft ended. Antonio Simmons inked a deal with the Buccaneers while Ricky Jeune and Corey Griffin are heading to the west coast to the Rams and 49ers respectively after signing deals. Lance and Lawrence Austin are staying in Atlanta for now where they will tryout for a spot on the Falcons roster. Former center Freddie Burden is heading Cleveland where he will get a shot at the Browns rookie minicamp. Finally Keshun Freeman is going to the Ravens rookie minicamp and if that doesn’t lead to a roster spot he will head to New Orleans for their minicamp.
Great pitching led to wins over Wake Forest on Friday and Saturday. Xzavion Curry started on Friday and pitched a complete game shutout with 12 strikeouts and only 2 walks and 2 hits allowed on the way to a 7-0 win over the Demon Deacons. Not to be outdone, Connor Thomas started Saturday and also threw a complete game. This time he gave up 1 run, but he also threw an incredible 17 strikeouts and just 1 walk. Total domination. Wake came back with a 6-3 win on Sunday, but Tech grabbed the series.
Josh Okogie declared for the NBA draft a few weeks ago, but did not sign an agent so he could still return. Coming up we may start to get an idea of whether or not he will be back next year. He is waiting to get his “draft grade” from NBA teams to help him determine when in the draft he’d be likely to go and whether it’s worth it for him to leave. Most mock drafts have him going late in the second round, but there is plenty of time to change. The combine invites went out on Friday and it is likely that Okogie was invited although they haven’t been publicly announced yet. Okogie is receiving advice from his family.
