That team from Athens will go for a season sweep of Tech on May 8th.

Coming home from a disastrous weekend sweep in Chapel Hill, the Jackets tried to get back on track against yet another ranked team – their hated rivals. The dwags had been slowed down a bit over the weekend, losing a series to “Ole Miss” but were still 27-13 to the Jackets’ 22-19. They had won the game in Athens, handing Tech their only shutout of the season. This game was postponed 24 hours due to weather.

Midweek stalwart Brant Hurter (4-2, 5.75) faced off against freshman LHP C. J. Smith (0-0, 0.00). It was a grim night as uga got clutch two out hitting starting in their fifth inning to win their 5th straight over Tech. The Jackets seem hungover from their weekend still.

The Jackets missed a great chance in the first when English hit a bullet - right into the pitcher’s glove – with runners on the corners. It was easily turned into an inning ending DP. In the top of the 2nd, Joey Bart caught the runner straying off second base with an inning ending throwdown.

The Jackets struck first with a run in their 2nd, when Colin Hall drove in Oscar Serratos with a two out single. Bart erased another base runner – trying to steal third – in the top of the 3rd, and Austin Wilhite ended the inning with a great stop deep in the hole and strong throw to first.

The 1-0 lead lasted until the top of the 5th, when a two out solo homer by Maxwell tied it. In the Tech 5th, uga pulled pitcher Smith with one out and Wilhite on first, perhaps on a pitch count. Zac Kristofak, a sophomore RHP came in to face Bart.

In the top of the 6th, Tech fell behind by three on four hits and a hit batsman. Two of the singles were infield hits, including an unfortunate one that ticked off Hurter’s glove. Tech got one back in the bottom of the inning when Colin Hall drove in Murray. Jake Lee came into pitch the 7th for Tech and gave the run back when Aaron Schunk of Atlanta got his fourth hit of the night with a two out RBI single. Junior LHP Kevin Smith came in to pitch to Tech in the 7th and retired them with seven pitches, Tech looking futile. After a lead off single in the top of the 8th, Joseph Mannelly relieved Lee on the mound and gave up a two run homer to Talley, making it 7-2. After an out and yet another infield hit, the 4th or 5th of the game for uga, Hugh Chapman relieved Mannelly and gave up the 8th run on a double and sacrifice fly.

The game ended 8-3 after the Jackets scored a meaningless run when Colin Hall scored from 2nd on a missed pop-up. Aaron Schunk closed it out on the mound for the dwags, topping off his excellent night with the bat. Hurter took the loss, Kristofak the win as Tech falls to 22-20 with their fourth straight loss and a big weekend series against Wake Forest looming. They need to shake their blues quickly to salvage the season.
