The 2018 ACC Men’s Basketball tournament tips off today at noon with everyone’s favorite March Tradition: Georgia Tech vs Boston College. The Yellow Jackets and Eagles will face each other in the opening round of the conference tournament for the fourth time in six seasons. In 2013, Tech opened the game on a 15-0 run but ended up losing by 20 after Olivier Hanlan went off for 41 points. The Jackets got revenge in 2014, winning a 73-70 overtime thriller. The series continued in 2015 with BC edging GT 66-65. In this season’s regular season match, Georgia Tech couldn’t hold on to an 8-point halftime lead, falling 80-72 in overtime. Tech does enter today’s game on a two-game winning streak while BC has lost four of their last five. The game will tip off at noon and will be aired on ESPN2 or the ACCN (check your local listings). The winner will move on to face NC State on Wedensday.
The Georgia Tech basketball team will be lead onto the court by a pair of ACC honorees. Sophomore G Josh Okogie was named All-ACC third team, while senior big man Ben Lammers made it onto the All-Defense team. They’ll face off against All-ACC first team member and Player of the Year runner-up, Boston College G Jerome Robinson. Robinson finished behind Duke’s Marvin Bagley III in Player of the Year voting. The superstar freshman was also named Rookie of the Year and was the only unanimous first team All-ACC selection. Virginia’s Tony Bennett was named Coach of the Year while the Cav’s F Isaiah Wilkens was named Defensive Player and De’Andre Hunter was named 6th Man of the Year. UNC’s Luke Maye took home the award for Most Improved Player.
The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team is awaiting their postseason fate after falling in the second round of the ACC Tournament last week but the future looks bright for Michelle Joseph’s squad. Three members of the 2018 recruiting class were named to the Naismith High School All-American Team. G Elizabeth Balogun was named second team All-American while G Jasmine Carson and F Elizabeth Dixon were both recognized as Honorable Mentions. The trio headlined a class that was ranked as high as 7th in the country by some recruiting services. Congratulations to all three! We can’t wait to see you on The Flats!
