Phillips will have to sit out next season, after which he will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Phillips played in 31 games for Tennessee last season, starting 13, and averaged 6.2 points and 3.1 rebounds in just under 21 minutes per game. But his strong defensive play earned him playing time in Knoxville and was probably part of his appeal to Josh Pastner.
In Tennessee’s 81-58 win over Tech last season, Phillips tallied 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists in 30 minutes.
Phillips played his senior year at Wheeler High School in Marietta, Ga.
Georgia Tech will play Tennessee next season in Atlanta and in Knoxville in 2018.
