The ACC announced the 2017 All-ACC Football teams on Monday, featuring four Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Sophomores Parker Braun and KirVonte Benson each earned spots on the Second Team, while freshman punter Pressley Harvin III has named to the Third Team and senior Shamire Devine earned an Honorable Mention nod. With just those four honorees, Georgia Tech tied with North Carolina for fewest All-ACC nods, though Anthony Ratliff-Williams accounted for two of UNC’s four by earning a spot on both the First and Third Team (as a special teams player and all purpose weapon, respectively). Georgia Tech was the only team not to have a player earn a spot on the First Team and the only team to get shut out of awards on the defensive side of the ball. Clemson led the way with 18 honorees - 10 on offense and 8 on defense. Miami was close behind with 17, though just K Michael Badgley on the First Team.
In addition to the All-ACC football teams, the conference also released the 2017 All-ACC Volleyball teams on Monday with Tech’s Gabriela Stavnetchei earning First Team honorees. The senior outside hitter had an outstanding season, leading the conference in kills since September. Stavnetchei’s spot on the First Team is well earned and a positive capper for a somewhat disappointing 2017 season.
With football in the rearview mirror, it’s time to turn our full attention to basketball. If you haven’t kept up with the team’s start of the season, you’ve missed out on a very strong start to freshman PG Jose Alvarado’s career. Through four games, Alvarado is second on the team in both scoring and rebounding, providing some much needed offensive punch for a team fighting through a wave of suspensions. Alvarado was a much hyped recruit, but early in his tenure on the Flats he’s proven to be as advertised.
Alvarado and the Yellow Jackets will be back in action tonight against Northwestern as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Tune into ESPN2 at 7:00 pm to watch. If you’re a student, get to McCamish early to claim your Josh Pastner wig!
If you’re not a student but won some free swag, mark down January 28th in your calendars. The Yellow Jackets will be honoring former Georgia Tech star Chris Bosh by giving away replica Bosh jerseys to the first 2,000 fans in attendance for the game against Clemson. Last year’s Jarrett Jack jersey giveaway was a big hit and this is sure to bring out a crowd for a big ACC game.
