Georgia Tech Basketball: North Texas Preview

Yellow Jackets Look To Make It Three In A Row Against The Mean Green

NCAA Basketball: ACC Conference Tournament-Georgia Tech vs Pittsburgh Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

There’s good news. Tadric Jackson is coming back today! Georgia Tech has survived during the suspensions so far, but has far from excelled. Tadric Jackson will bring a much needed dose of offense and help Josh Pastner start to pare down his rotation. We will see today if Tadric is going to have some rust or if he can come in and and contribute immediately.

The North Texas Mean Green are 1-2 so far in 2017 against D-1 competition. The beat Bethune-Cookman by 12, but lost to UTRGV by 12, both at home. They also got crushed by 19 by a poor Nebraska team. This is not a good team. UNT really likes to spread out their minutes. The main scoring threats for the Mean Green are guards Roosevelt Smart and Ryan Woolridge. UNT lacks much inside presence with the 6’9 Shane Temara the only contributor over 6’7. Mercifully for the Yellow Jackets they are not very good from deep (at least against D-1 opposition) although Roosevelt Smart is a threat. One stat of note, UNT gets blocked on an insane 17.6% of their shots (5th worst in the country). Look for Lammers and Gueye to have a field day.

Through two games, the Yellow Jackets looked like they would struggle to find much scoring Ben Lammers, with Jose Alvarado and Brandon Alston providing offensive support. Against UTRGV that offensive template was changed. In addition to Alston’s 20 and Lammers’ 14 there were some surprise contributors. Abdoulaye Gueye added 13 points in a surprise offensive outburst and the freshman Curtis Haywood added 11. Tech finally had a respectable game from deep with 5-12 shooting from three including 2-3 each from Alston and Gueye. Now this team adds Jackson, who is a competent shooter so things are looking up from deep. I will be looking to see how Jackson fits into this team on his return. I would like to see him seamlessly integrate into the offense and have clean switches and assignments on defense.

This game takes place at McCamish at 4 pm.
