Technical Tidbits 10/24: Players of the Week Announced

New, comments
NCAA Football: Wake Forest at Georgia Tech Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

Georgia Tech senior guard Shamire Devine was named the ACC’s Offensive Lineman of the Week on Monday for his role in the Yellow Jackets’ 38-24 win over Wake Forest. Devine recorded 10 knock downs and paved the way for 427 rushing yards. He is the third Georgia Tech offensive lineman to take home the conference honors this season, following guard Parker Braun against Pitt and center Kenny Cooper against North Carolina. It’s a simple formula - Georgia Tech wins a conference game and an offensive lineman takes home player of the week honors.

While Devine taking home conference honors is the big story, Georgia Tech awarded their own player of the week honors on Monday. QB TaQuon Marshall, DT Brentavious Glanton, and LB Jaquan Henderson were named offensive, defensive, and special team players of the week, respectively. Marshall was 5/11 for 68 yards through the air, with 163 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Glanton tied for the team lead with 6 tackles, including one for a loss, while leading a defensive line that was key on several big second half stops. A true freshman, Henderson made two solo tackles on special teams, continuing a strong debut season.

In non-football news, Christopher Eubanks, Georgia Tech’s star tennis player, has elected to turn pro, forgoing his final year of eligibility. Accompanying the announcement was a letter from Eubanks describing how he came to Georgia Tech and thanking his coaches and teammates for helping him along his path to the professional ranks. Eubanks spent the summer competing as an amateur on the pro circuit, winning his first two matches at Atlanta’s BB&T Open and making the U.S. Open field in both the singles and doubles draws, winning a match in the latter. This fall, he was part of the doubles team that took home the championship at the Monterrey Challenge. He will enter the ATP at #309 in the world rankings.

Eubanks will leave Georgia Tech as one of the school’s all-time great tennis players. He is tied for 5th in career victories and 10th in winning percentage. He is the first Yellow Jacket to take home two ACC Player of the Year honors. He capped his collegiate career this spring by becoming the first Tech tennis player to reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championships since 1988. Best wishes to Christopher as he embarks on what will hopefully be a long and productive career on the pro circuit!

A couple scheduling items to close out Tuesday’s Tidbits:

  • Make it four straight not-noon kickoffs for Georgia Tech! The Yellow Jackets’ game at Virginia on November 4th will kick at 3:00 pm and be broadcast on your regional sports network (Regional Fox Sports Networks in most places).
