On the heels of a big-time camp on Georgia Tech’s campus this past weekend, one of the Yellow Jackets’ most prominent targets on the offensive line gave Paul Johnson’s staff some excellent news on Tuesday afternoon:
Extremely blessed to say I'm committed pic.twitter.com/ljbQvvO1Aw
— Zach Quinney (@zach_quinney) July 19, 2016
Quinney becomes the 7th commitment in the 2017 class, and joins Connor Hansen as the second offensive lineman in the class. Quinney checks in at a very tall 6’6” and around 260 pounds, with plenty of room on his frame to add more weight. He plays his high school ball at Savannah Christian School, where he was a teammate of recent 5-star Georgia Tech target Demetris Robertson. Quinney commits to Georgia Tech over other reported offers from Mississippi State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Wake Forest, among other Power-5 programs.
Quinney displays prototypical size for an offensive tackle, with a lengthy (but sturdy) frame. His junior year highlights (embedded below) show him playing both guard and tackle, although his height makes him a prime target to play tackle in college. Quinney shows excellent motor and athleticism in his film, finishing plays well and shooting out to take on linebackers and safeties with ease -- a highly necessary skill for the Yellow Jackets’ offensive linemen. One of the biggest things he’ll need to work on is pad level, which will always be a struggle for someone of his height, but conversely his height is a weapon in pass protection that Georgia Tech so desperately needs.
Quinney is rated a 3-star recruit by Rivals (5.6) and the 247Sports Composite (0.8362).
With the addition of Quinney, here is Georgia Tech’s 2017 recruiting class as it currently stands:
