After going through the 1st day of the draft without any Jackets selected, both Connor Justus and Matt Gonzalez were taken early on the MLB Draft’s second day. Justus was selected during the 5th round, pick 156, and Gonzalez soon followed with the 169th overall selection at the top of the 6th round.
It is unknown if Justus, a Junior, will sign with the Angels or if he will return to the Jackets next season. With a 5th round slot, however, it appears that he will be going pro. Justus was ranked the #131 prospect in the draft by mlb.com, and was expected to be the 1st Jacket taken this year.
Gonzalez, the senior, had a huge year in which he improved across all statistical categories. Many fans will be excited that he’s staying home. The Braves intend to develop Gonzo as a flexible infielder who may fill the vacant 3B spot for the major league club in the future.
Congrats to Matt and Connor, who will be continuing a rich tradition of former Jackets in professional baseball!
Matt Gonzalez is staying home.
