ESPN (McMurphy) – TaxSlayer Bowl vs LSU
ESPN (Schlabach) – Military Bowl vs Temple
Fox Sports – Military Bowl vs South Florida
CBS Sports – Independence Bowl vs Kentucky
SB Nation – Pinstripe Bowl vs Maryland
This is probably the most eclectic mix of possible destinations we’ve seen so far. Most of these have been projected previously, with the exception of the games with the two SEC opponents.
If we’re being honest, nobody wants the Jackets to head back to Shreveport, La. But I think a matchup with Kentucky could be fun. The Wildcats run a fast, fun offense – maybe not so much fun for the Georgia Tech defense, but fun to watch. And much like I mentioned with Arkansas last week, this could give the Jackets a chance to potentially go 3-0 against the SEC this season. Tech owns the all-time series with Kentucky 11-7-1, with the last game being played in 1960.
The most intriguing matchup, in my humble opinion, is that of the LSU Tigers in the TaxSlayer Bowl. The Tigers started the season slowly, firing Les Miles after their home loss to Auburn. But the Fighting Ed Orgerons went on a hot streak, before losing to Alabama and most recently, Florida. But LSU is still one of the most talented teams in the SEC, powered by a stout running game and another one of their trademark defenses. This is certainly the most challenging opponent the Jackets could potentially face, but it’s also the best attainable destination. This bowl destination and opponent is probably only possible with a win in Athens on Saturday. Tech owns the all-time series record 12-7 over LSU, thought the Tigers have won the last five, including the most recent matchup, the 38-3 thrashing of the Jackets in the 2008 Chick-fil-A Bowl.
We’ll bring you one more batch of projections next week before we know for sure where we’re headed!
