The Poll Review After Week 2

New, 76 comments

A look at the new AP poll as we begin week 3.

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Every week we’ll be looking at the polls and where our Yellow Jackets sit in them.  That's nice to say, isn't it?  Until the Playoff Poll comes out, we’ll stick with the AP poll.  So here’s what the poll looks like after the second week of the season:

  1. Ohio State
  2. Alabama
  3. TCU
  4. Michigan State
  5. Baylor
  6. USCw
  7. Georgia
  8. Notre Dame
  9. FSU
  10. UCLA
  11. Clemson
  12. Oregon
  13. LSU
  14. Georgia Tech
  15. Ole Miss
  16. Oklahoma
  17. Texas A&M
  18. Auburn
  19. BYU
  20. Arizona
  21. Utah
  22. Mizzou
  23. Northwestern
  24. Wisconsin
  25. Oklahoma State

You may have noticed an overwhelming amount of teams from our neighboring conference in the poll.  As you know, Paul Johnson has repeatedly expressed his displeasure with the favoritism that voters show the SEC, even with their 1-5 record in major-6 bowls the last 3 years.  The SEC looked bad this weekend, as noted by Auburn’s plummet from 6 to 18 and Arkansas dropping out completely after losing to Toledo.

There was a slight rearranging of the Top 4 as Michigan State jumped Baylor with their win over then-number 7 Oregon.  Baylor also struggled mightily with Lamar for the first half, so I’m okay with that jump.

Tech moved up one spot again after torching Tulane, but sure, keep LSU ranked that high.  That’s certain to work out.

Tech will go into South bend a top-15 team, playing a Notre Dame quarterback who is starting his first game.  The Irish have lost both their star running back and quarterback in consecutive weeks to season-ending injuries.  Of course we want to beat the Irish, but not like this.  We wish them the speediest of recoveries and health the rest of the season.

Otherwise, barring a massive upset from a team that didn’t make a bowl last year, Ohio State should cruise to a playoff berth.  There’s no reason they shouldn’t hold on to that #1 spot all season as the only tough game remaining on their schedule is Week 12 against Michigan State.
