Georgia Tech begins its NCAA Tournament play tomorrow in the Oxford Regional, playing the Washington Huskies at 4 P.M. The Huskies (39-15-1, 21-9 PAC-12) finished the season second in the PAC-12. This will be Washington's ninth trip to the NCAA Tournament, but only their first since 2004. In the overall series between Washington and Georgia Tech, the Huskies hold a slight lead of 5-4, but the Yellow Jackets will look to even up the overall series.
After being picked to finish tenth in the PAC-12, the Huskies fought their way to 21 conference wins, finishing second. Washington won 10 total series before dropping their final two series to Oregon State and UCLA. When scoring four or more runs, the Huskies are 35-2-1. When they hold opponents under four points, they are 34-6. They are 28-2 when leading after four innings and 14-0 when leading after the first.
The Huskies had five regulars who hit .290 or above:
Name/Position | Batting Average | Home Runs | RBI | OPS | Stolen Bases - Attempts |
Brian Wolfe/OF | .361 | 5 | 35 | .929 | 2-4 |
Trevor Mitsui/DH | .335 | 5 | 32 | .886 | 1-2 |
Austin Rei/C | .329 | 2 | 27 | .892 | 1-1 |
Andrew Ely/2B | .306 | 2 | 31 | .807 | 2-3 |
Braden Bishop/OF | .296 | 0 | 25 | .736 | 19-21 |
Their pitching staff was pretty good too. The Huskies had three pitchers with at least 14 starts:
Name | W-L | Strikeouts | Walks | ERA | B/AVG |
Tyler Davis | 10-2 | 54 | 15 | 1.75 | .241 |
Jeff Brigham | 7-3 | 41 | 20 | 2.93 | .247 |
Jared Fisher | 6-4 | 58 | 43 | 4.17 | .267 |
They also have a few options out of the bullpen:
Name | W-L | Strikeouts | Walks | ERA | B/AVG | Saves | IP |
Troy Rallings | 5-1 | 32 | 9 | 2.18 | .235 | 9 | 41.1 |
Will Ballowe | 4-1 | 22 | 9 | 2.39 | .247 | 1 | 49.0 |
Brandon Choate | 3-1 | 24 | 13 | 2.60 | .225 | 0 | 27.2 |
Trevor Dunlap | 2-2 | 45 | 23 | 3.62 | .232 | 5 | 54.2 |
So how are we going to do in this game? This is a winnable game, but we'll have to come out swinging.
