Sunday wrapped up what would prove to be a rough weekend for Georgia Tech baseball. After winning series against both Miami and UNC, the Yellow Jackets failed to continue that momentum this weekend, losing the final game of the series sweep to Pitt 4-2.
Pitt got the scoring started in the bottom of the third inning Sunday afternoon. With two runners in scoring position and one out, redshirt sophomore SS Dylan Wolsonovich came up to the plate. On the 3-1 pitch, Wolsonovich hammered a single into left field, which was good enough to bring both the runners home.
The Yellow Jackets would stay silent until the top of the fifth inning. With a runner on second and two outs, junior CF Daniel Spingola came up to the plate. On the 0-1 pitch, Spingola singled into center field to bring home freshman RF Keenan Innis from second.
Pitt would recover from that pretty quickly. In the bottom of the fifth inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, junior LF Boo Vasquez came up to the plate. After working a full count, Vasquez ultimately took a walk to bring home the runner from third.
Pitt would score their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. With runners on the corners and nobody out, junior 3B Jordan Frabasilio came up to the plate. On the 0-1 pitch, Frabasilio hit a deep fly ball to center field that would be caught by Daniel Spingola. Unfortunately, it was deep enough that the runner on third had plenty of time to scamper home.
The Yellow Jackets would try to come back one final time in the top of the seventh inning. After leading off the inning with a triple, freshman SS Connor Justus scored on a passed ball. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, that would result in the final run of the game, ending with a final score of 4-2.
Starting the game for the Yellow Jackets was redshirt junior RHP Matt Grimes. In his 5.0 innings of work, Grimes allowed three runs on five hits, with three strikeouts and three walks. He also hit a batter and gave up two doubles in his 94 pitches. Pitching the final 3.0 innings for the Yellow Jackets was senior RHP Jonathan Roberts. Roberts allowed one run on three hits (one double) with no strikeouts and three walks in his 49 pitches. Matt Grimes was credited with the loss for the Yellow Jackets.
Starting the game for Pitt was senior RHP Matt Wotherspoon. In his 7.0 innings of work, Wotherspoon allowed two runs on six hits (one triple), with four strikeouts. He also hit one batter. Pitching the last 2.0 innings for the Panthers was redshirt junior RHP Luke Curtis. He gave up zero runs on two hits (one double), with a strikeout and a walk.
After a rough series against Pitt, the Yellow Jackets will look to rebound against Georgia State Wednesday night on the road. The game will be available on 91.1 FM WREK and on ESPN3 and starts at 6.
