KeShun Freeman became Georgia Tech's fourth commitment when he agreed to join on June 7th, 2013. He was the first of 8 commitments in the month of June, and the third defensive commitment in the class (after Miles Taylor and Tre Jackson). Freeman stands at 6'1", 223lbs, which is fairly small for a DE. He reigns from Callaway High School in Hogansville, GA, which is about halfway between Newnan and LaGrange. He sported a 4.0 GPA in high school, and was rated the 5th-best DE in Georgia, and the 61st overall prospect in Georgia. He committed to Tech over a lot of other offers, including Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Stanford.
Freeman's film makes one question why he was listed as a DE. It would appear that Freeman played mainly an OLB role (which would really fit his frame quite a bit better). Freeman does do a great job of rushing the passer, and does so using his smaller frame and incredible acceleration to slip through blockers, even when double-teamed. Freeman does a solid job of focusing on his assignment, staying with a play, and showing effort and intensity. Freeman also shows some major physicality and great vision, especially from the LB spot. Like Jackson yesterday, Freeman's film does not show much in pass coverage, but in this case focuses on his pass-rushing and run-stopping.
Freeman will be slotted at Georgia Tech as either a WDE (rush end), or perhaps the OLB slot. His speed and acceleration are his biggest assets in rushing the passer or stretching a play to the sideline, and I could see him playing either role effectively. To play DE, he may need to bulk up and add 20-30 pounds. Either way, he could play a really nice role for Georgia Tech in pass-rush situations. Freeman is a major pickup for the Jackets, and a major win over all of the other schools that got him. Freeman is just one of a group of pickups at the DE spot, as the Jackets look to replace Emmanuel Dieke and Jeremiah Attaochu.
Freeman is listed as a 3-star prospect by Rivals (5.6) and by the 247Sports Composite (.8560).
