Georgia Tech Football: 3 Things to Watch for Against Virginia

Let's take a look at what to watch for against the Fightin' Thomas Jeffersons.

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Last week was fun. One of my keys for the Pitt game came through in a big way: the defense. In only the first few minutes of the game, Pitt's offense had fumbled the ball five times, and Tech had turned four of those in for touchdowns. With only one more touchdown, the Yellow Jackets would have enough points to win the game.

Now, let's look at some factors for this week.

1. The Defense

This sort of worked last week. Like I said earlier, the defense stepped up in a big way in the first few minutes of the game, forcing five turnovers.

However, the defense went back to the way it looked in every other game this season: porous. They didn't tackle very well, couldn't get to the quarter back (with a couple exceptions), and they let Pitt come back and make a game out of it.

This week, the Yellow Jackets probably won't be able to get away with that. This is a better UVA team than in years past. They've always had the talent, but from what I've seen this year, Mike London is finally getting some good play out of his team.

2. Jon Tenuta

Speaking of defense, we can't play Virginia and not mention the former defensive coordinator for Georgia Tech. As all of you know, Tenuta's defenses are very blitz-happy and rely on that to hide any weaknesses that may occur in the secondary.

Paul Johnson knows that the blitz is coming. He knew this last year too, and there wasn't very much he could do to stop it. Johnson's offense turned the ball over five times. In spite of this, the offense still managed over 500 total yards, with Zach Laskey, David Sims and Robbie Godhigh all rushing for over 100 yards.

If we can replicate this on offense without the five turnovers, the Yellow Jackets should not have any problem handling the Fightin' Thomas Jeffersons.

3. Homecoming

It's Homecoming on the Flats this weekend. Joey put up a list of some of the major events that will be occurring this weekend. It should definitely be a fun weekend.

The Yellow Jackets will need to handle their Homecoming much better than Pitt did. I don't have to remind any of y'all that Pitt had a pretty rough Homecoming last week.

They're going to have to come out pumped up and ready to play. They need to handle this game with the same intensity they did with Miami and Virginia Tech. They need that same desire for victory.

That's what I'm keeping an eye out for? What are y'all looking for?
