The first word that comes to my mind when I look back at this game is "rain". I think you'll understand why.
The second word that comes to my mind is "ugly". This win was ugly, there's no doubt about that -- but it was a win, and still found ways to impress me.
UNC came out and scored 13 points in the first quarter before the Yellow Jackets were really able to get much going. It wasn't looking good -- the UNC offense was thrashing Ted Roof's crew, and the Tech offense looked like it was operating in quicksand.
The Yellow Jackets responded to the Tar Heels' second TD with a score of their own, although they would be answered right back as North Carolina scored their third touchdown on four drives, to make the game 20-7 in their favor.
Here's where my "impressed" feelings come from. Georgia Tech is down two scores, playing in the rain and struggling to get much of anything going, and it's not looking good. It's a great time to roll over and call it quits and start thinking about Virginia Tech on Thursday.
Obviously Tech disagreed. The Yellow Jackets scored a pretty TD on a pass from Vad Lee to Darren Waller with less than a minute until halftime, and made some adjustments in the locker room that enabled them to shut down the Tar Heel offense in the second half. Consider this: after halftime, UNC's stat line reads as such...
18 plays, 58 yards, 7:39 TOP, 3 punts, 1 INT, 0 points
Folks, that's called taking a team to the woodshed.
Tech added two touchdowns on drives of 9- and 11-plays respectively, and were able to kill the clock and finish a 13-play drive with two plays from victory formation.
It wasn't pretty, but it was a good sign that the team was able to fight back from the edge of the cliff to push UNC right back off of their side. Good win. Looking forward to this Thursday.
What are your thoughts about this win, Tech fans??
