Georgia Tech whooped on on Boston College in the first half. There really isn't any other way to say it. I think we can all be a little positive about this victory, while also acknowledging that BC is bad, like really bad (89 out of 124 according to advanced metrics, they are so bad we actually dropped in the performance ratings because they are so bad and we allowed them to come back in the 2nd half). Some of the things I noticed after looking back at the film...
- Our blocking was.....decent. We had some great blocks along the line and on the outside with our wide-receivers and A-backs. But we also had a lot of misses on scoops, lead blocking to the outside, and sealing off the corners. Our A-backs are consistently our best blockers. I only criticize the receivers when I see a missed block, so perhaps it is just selection bias, but I think we can continue to get better.
- Our defense certainly played better. Even with a rough second half, our defense played a sound game and absolutely killed first and second downs and did not let BC get a drive going. The whole game we only allowed 3 drives of more than 4 plays, and only one of those was in the first half. Georgia Tech had 9 drives of more than 4 plays.
- Tevin got outplayed in this game. He had some good reads and makes some great runs but, he seemed nervous. The first drive was not a good drive at all for Tech and Tevin was throwing ducks all game. He really needs to be able to throw the easy passes with some level of confidence, especially when the guy behind him looks damn good doing the same things Tevin does.
The following are my observations after viewing each play after re-watching the football game this week. I am sure I missed some things and am no football genious. So if you got something to say after reading through my film review, lets talk about it! Put it down in the comments.

|
Nate Freese kickoff for 65 yards returned by Jamal Golden for 12 yards to the GTech 6, tackled by Steven Daniels, GEORGIA TECH penalty 6 yard illegal block on N/A accepted. |
Not quite the best start in the world but. A decent return but a stupid penalty knocks us back |
|
Georgia Tech at 14:52 |
BC |
Oh I almost forgot, RON CHERRY!!!!! |
1st and 10 at GT 6 |
Tevin Washington pass incomplete to Zach Laskey. |
A simple fake toss rollout to Tevin's left. He has Laskey wide open in the flats for a first down. |
2nd and 10 at GT 6 |
Orwin Smith rush for 2 yards to the GTech 8, tackled by Kevin Pierre-Louis and Sean Sylvia. |
Man that's an awful read by Tevin. The DE almost had Tevin in his arms as Tevin was pulling the ball from Laskey. Maybe he was startled or something. |
3rd and 8 at GT 8 |
Tevin Washington pass complete to B.J. Bostic for 39 yards to the GTech 47 for a 1ST down. |
This is a great catch by Bostic. He makes this play completely. Tevin needs to set his feet and throw a confident ball, he kind of just slings it out there but luckily Bostic makes a great play |
1st and 10 at GT 47 |
Zach Laskey rush for 8 yards to the BC 45, tackled by Nick Clancy and Kasim Edebali. |
I am pretty sure Laskey doesn't get touched for 5 of these yards. The left side of the line does a great job clearing everyone out and making this an easy read. |
2nd and 2 at BC 45 |
Zach Laskey rush for 9 yards to the BC 36, tackled by Nick Clancy for a 1ST down. |
Another easy read for Tevin and Laskey hits the hole well. I think Laskey could run with his head up a little more, he seems to stumble a little. |
1st and 10 at BC 36 |
Zach Laskey rush for 26 yards to the BC 10, tackled by Jim Noel for a 1ST down. |
As I speak he runs with his head up and makes a great cut outside for an extra 15 yards. That's the third play in a row we have simply run Triple to the left and gotten big yardage with the B-Back |
1st and Goal at BC 10 |
David Sims rush for 8 yards to the BC 2, tackled by Jim Noel. |
Wooh, The line almost allows enough penetration to get to Tevin before he hands the ball of to Sims on the B-Back Trap. The right side misses the scoop here but he is also the one who went straight down on the play and had to be helped off the field, Will Jackson. Wonder what happened. |
2nd and Goal at BC 2 |
Zach Laskey rush for a loss of 1 yard to the BC 3, tackled by Kasim Edebali and Kieran Borcich. |
Quick handoff to the B-Back and the line gets no push on the right side. Two of our offensive lineman couldn't push back one BC d-lineman. |
3rd and Goal at BC 3 |
David Sims rush for a loss of 2 yards to the BC 5, tackled by Manuel Asprilla. |
This is a poor reach block by Shaquille Mason and a bad job blocking on the outside by Smith. Godhigh has no where to go with this pitch. Darren Waller also just completely misses the linebacker who makes the initial hit, just bad blocking all around on this play. |
4th and Goal at BC 5 |
David Scully 22 yard field goal BLOCKED, Justin Simmons for 12 yards, to the BC 19, tackled by Sean Poole. |
Can we just quit kicking, like, forever? This is on Scully; the ball needs to be way higher when you are only kicking a 22 yard field goal. |

1st and 10 at BC 19 |
Chase Rettig pass complete to Johnathan Coleman for 16 yards to the BC 35, tackled by T.J. Barnes and Louis Young for a 1ST down. |
Someone tried to jump this pass, I can't tell who it is, and whiffed. Also we had two missed tackles on the play. I think I am going to keep a running tally. |
1st and 10 at BC 35 |
Chase Rettig pass complete to David Dudeck for a loss of 2 yards to the BC 33, tackled by Brandon Watts. |
Watts does a great job on this screen. There are two linemen back to the inside about to wreck havoc on our defense. But Watts comes in from the outside and makes a great tackle for loss. |
2nd and 12 at BC 33 |
Chase Rettig pass incomplete to Alex Amidon. |
If Rettig wants to throw the ball out of bounds unprompted, I guess we will let him. |
3rd and 12 at BC 33 |
Chase Rettig pass complete to Alex Amidon for 10 yards to the BC 43, tackled by Louis Young. |
Good pressure by the D-line to make Rettig get the ball out quick, and Young made sure the receiver wasn't going to get the first down on his route. |
4th and 2 at BC 43 |
Timeout Georgia Tech, clock 09:16. |
Burning a timeout 6 minutes into the game. Then again, we don't have a DC so. |
4th and 2 at BC 43 |
Chase Rettig punt for 57 yards for a touchback, GEORGIA TECH penalty 10 yard personal foul on N/A accepted. |
Holy crap. Chase Rettig should be a punter! BC lines up in a shotgun and Rettig just takes two steps and BOOTS the ball. And GT gets a penalty to boot. Miami (Ohio) used to run this play with Big Ben, if he saw something he didn't like on 4th down, he would just punt it away. I love this play. Terrible field position for GT though |
DRIVE TOTALS: BC drive: 4 plays 36 yards, 01:35 BC PUNT |

|
1st and 10 at GT 10 |
Tevin Washington rush for 16 yards to the GTech 26, tackled by Kevin Pierre-Louis for a 1ST down. |
The toss trap play we run is awesome. Tevin doesn't have to do anything but run to daylight on this play. I would love to know what keys PJ looks for in a defense to run this play, just so I could call it out in the stands. |
1st and 10 at GT 26 |
Zach Laskey rush for 3 yards to the GTech 29, tackled by Connor Wujciak. |
Triple, it looked like it was going to gain more but I guess the hole closed pretty quickly. |
2nd and 7 at GT 29 |
Robert Godhigh rush for no gain to the GTech 29, tackled by Steele Divitto and Bryan Murray. |
Laskey hasn't quite figured out blocking on the perimeter yet. Then again, the corner does make a great play but, I'd like to see Laskey do a little better here. |
3rd and 7 at GT 29 |
Tevin Washington rush for 11 yards to the GTech 40, tackled by Nick Clancy for a 1ST down. |
A-Back Belly! The A-back turns up inside, Tevin reads the DT and can either give it or keep it. Tevin keeps it on a nice read and gains a first down. |
1st and 10 at GT 40 |
Tony Zenon rush for 16 yards to the BC 44, tackled by Jim Noel for a 1ST down. |
We run a belly trap where the A-back to the play side curls underneath and fakes a hand off from Tevin, who is spinning like a normal B-Back trap. But then Tevin takes the ball outside with the A-Back coming around on the toss motion. Weird. |
1st and 10 at BC 44 |
B.J. Bostic rush for 1 yard to the BC 43, tackled by Nick Clancy and Kasim Edebali. |
And there is the "give" compliment to the trap play I just described. Didn't work quite so well though. Interior blocking gave him nothing. |
2nd and 9 at BC 43 |
Tevin Washington pass incomplete to Jeff Greene, broken up by Justin Simmons. |
Tevin's play action fake on this reminds me of the scene in the Water Boy when the Mr. Coach Kline is going, "He fakes to the left. No, He fakes to the right, He doesn't fake, He thinks about faking, he pretends to fake." |
3rd and 9 at BC 43 |
Tevin Washington pass complete to Zach Laskey for 11 yards to the BC 32, tackled by Jim Noel for a 1ST down. |
Pistol! A nice screen play design to Laskey, but Tevin throws and awful pass. I mean, we got lucky no one was around, this throw has to be better. |
1st and 10 at BC 32 |
Tevin Washington rush for no gain to the BC 32, tackled by Bryan Murray. |
Not sure why he kept it here. |
2nd and 10 at BC 32 |
B.J. Bostic rush for 15 yards to the BC 17, tackled by Jim Noel for a 1ST down. |
Counter Option with some great blocking on the outside by Godhigh is easy yards. |
1st and 10 at BC 17 |
Orwin Smith rush for 3 yards to the BC 14, tackled by Kevin Pierre-Louis. |
Smith helps us get some yards but our blocking was not good enough on this toss. BC really got some penetration on the outside that made it a tough run for Orwin. |
2nd and 7 at BC 14 |
Tevin Washington rush for 2 yards to the BC 12, tackled by Steele Divitto. |
Tough running in the middle of the field for Washington. Sets up another 3rd down. |
3rd and 5 at BC 12 |
Tevin Washington rush for 12 yards for a TOUCHDOWN. |
YEAH TEVIN! This is a designed QB sprint out with a pitch man and Tevin reads the defense correctly, tucks it up, and hammers it home to the endzone. |
David Scully extra point GOOD. |
||
David Scully kickoff for 65 yards returned by Spiffy Evans for 19 yards to the BC 19, tackled by Demond Smith. |

1st and 10 at BC 19 |
Andre Williams rush for a loss of 1 yard to the BC 18, tackled by Brandon Watts and Jabari Hunt-Days. |
|
2nd and 11 at BC 18 |
Chase Rettig pass incomplete to Bobby Swigert. |
Watts needs to keep contain a little better so Rettig can't roll out for an easy throw. Luckily he overthrows it. |
3rd and 11 at BC 18 |
Chase Rettig pass complete to David Dudeck for 4 yards to the BC 22, tackled by Jemea Thomas. |
3 missed tackles so far, but then again the time to miss a tackle is 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 10. |
4th and 7 at BC 22 |
Gerald Levano punt for 44 yards, returned by Jamal Golden for 3 yards to the GTech 37, tackled by Jim Noel. |

Just showed a highlight from the first BC-GT game of PJ's tenure, weird. |
1st and 10 at GT 37 |
Tevin Washington pass incomplete to Anthony Autry. |
Autry stumbles as the ball goes in the air but, I doubt he would have been able to catch up to this ball. I'll take it though, Tevin stepped up and made a great throw downfield. |
2nd and 10 at GT 37 |
Robert Godhigh rush for 12 yards to the GTech 49, tackled by Justin Simmons, BOSTON COLLEGE penalty offside defense declined for a 1ST down. |
I love it! Tevin tries to cut it up, sees nothing there, comes back to the outside, and because Godhigh kept his pitch relationship the whole time he is open for an easy 12 yards. |
1st and 10 at GT 49 |
Zach Laskey rush for 4 yards to the BC 47, tackled by Steven Daniels. |
Laskey just kind of falls for four yards, I'll take it. |
2nd and 6 at BC 47 |
Zach Laskey rush for 10 yards to the BC 37, tackled by Sean Sylvia and Tim Joy for a 1ST down. |
We are killing the right side of the BC defensive with the same B-back dive out of triple. Tevin audibles to the play and Laskey just runs forward for 10 yards, this is easy pickings. |
1st and 10 at BC 37 |
Orwin Smith rush for 16 yards to the BC 21 for a 1ST down. |
Orwin has more yards after contact than any other Tech A-back, maybe of all of PJ's teams. He should have gotten tackled for no gain, instead throws a stiff arm and gains 16 yards |
1st and 10 at BC 21 |
David Sims rush for 3 yards to the BC 18, tackled by Steven Daniels and C.J. Parsons. |
Sims really has no where to go. But a good read. |

2nd and 7 at BC 18 |
Tevin Washington rush for a loss of 4 yards, fumbled, forced by Dominic Appiah, recovered by GTech Tevin Washington at the BC 22, GEORGIA TECH penalty 15 yard personal foul on Robert Godhigh accepted. |
Remember the first play of the game where I said Tevin was tackled before he even gave the ball away to the B-back? Well it happened again and Tevin couldn't get the pitch out in time and fumbled. And then Godhigh comes out of nowhere to get a personal foul, kewl. |
3rd and 26 at BC 37 |
Tevin Washington pass complete to B.J. Bostic for 27 yards to the BC 10, tackled by Spenser Rositano for a 1ST down. |
This pass should be picked. I mean, how BC has no one there to pick it is just unlucky. But hey, BJ Bostic was open in the middle of the field. |
1st and Goal at BC 10 |
Tevin Washington rush for 3 yards to the BC 7, tackled by Dominic Appiah. |
Good keep by Tevin, he is able to follow the B-back through the hole, might have been able to get some more yards but. |
2nd and Goal at BC 7 |
Zach Laskey rush for 6 yards to the BC 1, tackled by Justin Simmons and Kevin Pierre-Louis. |
Great run by Laskey. He gets his feat over the pile in front of him and almost gets in the endzone. |
3rd and Goal at BC 1 |
Tevin Washington rush for 1 yard for a TOUCHDOWN. |
Touchdown on the keep. Great drive by the offense. |
David Scully extra point GOOD. |

David Scully kickoff for 57 yards returned by Spiffy Evans for 23 yards to the BC 31, tackled by Chris Milton and Anthony Harrell. |

1st and 10 at BC 31 |
Andre Williams rush for 16 yards to the BC 47, tackled by Jeremiah Attaochu for a 1ST down. |
The draw freezes our defense and Williams makes a nice cut to run to the open lane. Our D-line might have been too focused on the pass rush. |
1st and 10 at BC 47 |
Chase Rettig pass complete to Alex Amidon for 12 yards to the GTech 41, tackled by Louis Young for a 1ST down. |
Louis Young is leaving this route open to take away the deep throws and anything inside, just a good pass. |
1st and 10 at GT 41 |
Chase Rettig pass complete to Alex Amidon for 14 yards to the GTech 27 for a 1ST down. |
Hunt-Days really needs to get back in pass coverage sooner. This drag route over the middle shouldn't really be open. |
1st and 10 at GT 27 |
Andre Williams rush for 5 yards to the GTech 22, tackled by Jeremiah Attaochu. |
Our D-line plays this draw much better, but we miss two tackles, that's 5. |
2nd and 5 at GT 22 |
Chase Rettig pass incomplete to Alex Amidon. |
This pass is open but Rettig is again inaccurate with his throw. |
3rd and 5 at GT 22 |
Timeout Boston College, clock 10:37. |
I will take credit for this play because the crowd was too loud for Rettig to communicate with the coaches, you are welcome. |
3rd and 5 at GT 22 |
Chase Rettig pass complete to Chris Pantale for 8 yards to the GTech 14, tackled by Jeremiah Attaochu for a 1ST down. |
Attaochu should get there a little earlier because no one is on his side of the field but, at least he wrapped up. |
1st and 10 at GT 14 |
Andre Williams rush for a loss of 2 yards to the GTech 16, tackled by T.J. Barnes. |
T.J. Barnes makes a play! He actually doesn't use his size on this play and just runs around the center. |
2nd and 12 at GT 16 |
Chase Rettig pass complete to Bobby Swigert for 8 yards to the GTech 8, tackled by Isaiah Johnson. |
Isaiah Johnson makes a nice tackle here. Our pass rush has been non-existent on this drive. |
3rd and 4 at GT 8 |
Chase Rettig pass incomplete to Chris Pantale, broken up by Isaiah Johnson. |
Isaiah Jonson made a great play on this ball to knock it out just enough for the ball to hit the ground. |
4th and 4 at GT 8 |
Nate Freese 25 yard field goal GOOD. |
|
Nate Freese kickoff for 58 yards returned by Jamal Golden for 36 yards to the GTech 43, tackled by Kevin Pierre-Louis. |
Great return and blocking here. |

I guess CPJ is just rotating Vad Lee in every couple of series now? Solid plan I think, as long as it doesn't impact Tevin's play |
1st and 10 at GT 43 |
Vad Lee pass incomplete to T.J. Barnes. |
The play by play for this says Vad Lee incomplete to T.J. Barnes......I can't even concentrate on this play I am laughing so hard, incomplete. |
2nd and 10 at GT 43 |
Orwin Smith rush for 13 yards to the BC 44, tackled by C.J. Jones for a 1ST down. |
Great blocking on the toss. Orwin decided to just run past his blockers. If he had some more patience for Uzzi to get on the safety as the pulling guard he might have had 6. Great scoop block by the right tackle Morgan Bailey to get his man on the ground and not let him get wide. And good blocking by the wide receivers (Jeremy Moore and somebody else) on the outside for Orwin. A little more patience and this is 6. |
1st and 10 at BC 44 |
Tony Zenon rush for a loss of 3 yards to the BC 47, tackled by Spenser Rositano. |
And this is not good blocking. Not sure why we have Godhigh lined up as a TE, he can't block a DE unless he cuts him to the ground. No room for Zenon |
2nd and 13 at BC 47 |
Vad Lee rush for 11 yards to the BC 36, tackled by Nick Clancy. |
Roll out to Vad's right, nothing there so he tucks it for a nice gain. Also If you watch Godhigh block on this play its hilarious. |
3rd and 2 at BC 36 |
Vad Lee rush for 2 yards to the BC 34, tackled by Connor Wujciak and Kasim Edebali for a 1ST down. |
CPJ is doing to Vad what he did to Nesbitt. Just telling him the play call and giving him the read. Vad has no intention of giving this ball to the B-back on the dive. |
1st and 10 at BC 34 |
Orwin Smith rush for 3 yards to the BC 31, tackled by Spenser Rositano. |
Orwin makes a nice move to make the corner miss, but the wide receiver should be called for a block in the back here. |
2nd and 7 at BC 31 |
Vad Lee rush for 8 yards to the BC 23, tackled by Sean Sylvia for a 1ST down. |
Wow, first time I have seen this play. We line up with everyone to the right of the formation except an A-back. The A-back goes in typical toss motion and Vad gives a big sweep fake. He then just turns around with Laskey as his lead blocker and runs to the left. I guess we saw that BC was overcommitting to tosses to the strong side. When Vad can run this play works. |
1st and 10 at BC 23 |
Zach Laskey rush for 2 yards to the BC 21, tackled by Bryan Murray. |
16-5 first down advantage, awesome. Simple dive play. Hard read so I am glad he just gave it. |
2nd and 8 at BC 21 |
B.J. Bostic rush for a loss of 3 yards to the BC 24, tackled by Kieran Borcich. |
Yea this is not what we want from a toss. Deon Hill does a terrible job blocking on the outside. This whole drive one A-back has been lined up on the line of scrimmage like a tight end, and there has yet to be a good block. |
3rd and 11 at BC 24 |
Vad Lee rush for 24 yards for a TOUCHDOWN. |
Designed QB draw, and Vad is a boss. He makes about 4 people miss on this play. Man I am excited for him to grasp this offense. |

Another fumble, this time on the QB-RB exchange, BC is getting lucky we don't recover some of these. |

Good job by the defense to not let any stupid passes get completed for a first down, Attaochu almost sacks him on this play, dude is a hoss. |

The D-line does a great job of pushing their man in the backfield, but not over pursuing on the pass rush so the draw play goes no where. |
2nd and 10 at BC 7 |
Timeout Georgia Tech, clock 01:47. |
They just showed a graphic, we are outgaining BC 359 - 69 yards, that's awesome |
2nd and 10 at BC 7 |
Chase Rettig pass incomplete. |
While I would have liked a little pressure from the backside rusher so Rettig isn't able to stop rolling right and just wait for someone to get open, our secondary does a great job of covering all the receivers downfield and not giving Rettig anywhere to throw. |
3rd and 10 at BC 7 |
Chase Rettig pass complete to Alex Amidon for 9 yards to the BC 16, tackled by Rod Sweeting. |
Wow, I think he got this first down but the refs called him short. So he got out of bounds and didn't get a first, awesome. |

With how quick and fast our A-backs are, and how awful we have been at passing the ball, why don't we throw more underneath passes and let them make some plays in the open field. I haven't seen that much of it this year, and on this play Zenon makes 3 people miss for a big gain. |
1st and 10 at BC 15 |

Oh man we need to have this touchdown, or we don't need to but, it was open. Vad steps up in the pocket to run before he sees the receiver open and throws an awkward throw, set your feet! |

So nothing happened in the third quarter, and we get up 31-3 quickly, I think I'll stop writing down my thoughts on every play. |
This was an improvement over our performance to date, our we ready for BYU? I don't know. Lets just say BYU is an improvement over BC, and the 2nd half performance we put up won't be a big help.
