If you happened to forget about the basketball program, don't worry we are here to helpfully remind you! The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets play the Virginia Cavaliers tonight at the place soon to be formally known as the Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The two squads will battle it out for 11th place in the ACC and the right to potentially play Clemson or Maryland in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. Wooo!
In an effort to properly understand this matchup, we talked to blogger bro Brendan of the UVA website FromOldVirginia. We'll link up to his site and our answers once he publishes.Update:9:30 AM EST: Here's the link to our answers.
Here's to basketball!
1. What is UVA's perception of Paul Hewitt?
Nobody thinks he's a good coach. I don't think most people really know about the insane buyout he has. In general he's seen as a guy who can recruit like mad and can't do anything with that talent. If it weren't for Sidney Lowe and the strong dislikability of Seth Greenberg, Hewitt would probably have the UVA-fan stamp of approval as worst coach in the ACC.
2. Has UVA ever made a financial mistake as big as Georgia Tech's $8 million contract folly with Paul Hewitt?
Does holding out for Virginia Tech's inclusion in the ACC at the behest of the pursestring-holders in Richmond count?
Some might say extending Al Groh after 2007 counts, but I still don't think that rises to Hewitt-buyout levels. I can't think of anything similar and equally egregious at UVA; in fact, when you first told me exactly how that thing is set up my first reaction was "thank everything we never did anything like that."
3. *yawn* is anybody actually going to watch this game?
If we hadn't beaten Tech on Saturday, I think UVA fans would've ignored this one and just about everything else. Getting that sweep has a way of reactivating the Tony Bennett Kool-Aid we've all been chugging. We see next year as our time to make our grand reappearance on the college basketball map and most of us are looking at the finish to this season as a springboard to excellence in 2012.
4. Can UVA defeat the floundering Jackets in Atlanta?
Yes, if they hit free throws. It'll help if GT is throwing up its hands on the season. I think the mentality is still there for UVA.
5. What are UVA's baseball goals in 2011?
Win the ACC and get back to the College World Series. It's a little bit of a retooling year, especially in the outfield, but none of us doubt that this can be a top-8 team. Plus, this is Danny Hultzen's junior year - and probably his last - and I think most UVA baseball fans are hoping he can have a Golden Spikes, Dick Howser kind of year.
