What grade as Damon Stoudamire earned after Year 1?

The mailbag is brought to you by Section 103, home of the most unique and comfortable Georgia Tech apparel.

tyler_pifer92: Year 1 under Damon Stoudamire officially complete. What grade would you give him?

I predicted 19-12 (11-9) if everything went our way and my realistic prediction was 15-16 (8-12). I did not have us having beating Duke and UNC and given the job he’s done recruiting, I’ll give him a B-

Ben: I think it’s tough to give him a letter grade. Or at the very least, I think it would be difficult for a letter grade to accurately grade the season. It was very up and down, so saying an average grade wouldn’t describe that well. Given that it’s first season, I’ll say he earns a satisfactory mark.

Logan: Like a C+, maybe a B-? The results were a bit under .500 on the season which is kind of where I expected us to end up. There were some fun upsets, as far as a 1st season for Stoudamire goes this one was just kind of middle of the road.

Anuj Bhyravabhotla: We’ve already talked about Buster Faulkner and/or Chris Weinke potentially getting poached and we just saw Josh Crawford get poached. But here’s something interesting; with how well we were able to run the ball and the general better state of the offense, how long until Geep Wade gets poached? And will it be a lateral move or a vertical move?

Ben: Georgia Tech’s offensive line will have to continue to improve, but if it does, I could certainly see Wade taking a lateral move to show that the OL is his and not the head coach’s.

DressHerInWhiteAndGold: Thoughts on Saban’s comments on College Sports during round table.

Logan: Generally speaking I think he’s right. I’m not sure if all students purely make decisions based on money, but I imagine most do and I would too if I was a student athlete. We definitely need some kind of revenue sharing or at least regulation for the NIL. Boosters have always paid players, but the amount they are paying is getting to the point where it will be unsustainable in the future. I do wish he had spoken more on the greed of the conferences as well, this isn’t news to anyone but the greed of all the conferences to rake in this tv money is also getting out of hand and putting CFB as we know it in a dangerous position for the future.

TkTheGoat: Big news for fball transfer portal. We landed Penn St. DT Jordan Van den Berg and that FSU DT. Along with other defensive transfers and new DC, can you realistically see Tech winning the ACC?? If Offense stays the same as last year and D improves it will probably be around 8-4. But if D overhaul is success and offense improves as well, could we be looking at 10+ wins or even a spot in the 12 team plyf?

Ben: We just had our first winning season since the 2010s. Let’s take off the gold-colored glasses for a bit. It would take an incredibly dramatic shift on defense for that to happen. I think Tech has a chance to be more in play for the ACC than they were this season, but I think that’s far from the expectation.

Logan: Let’s slow our roll a bit on the expectations here. I think this team has gotten a lot of talent, debatably the most talent we’ve had since the start of the millennium, but this is also going to be a really tough season schedule wise. Notre Dame, FSU, Miami, Louisville, UNC, and some other team from the state of Georgia which are just as talented if not more so than we are. I’m not going to write off our chances to be win more than 8 games, but we will have to get some big wins at neutral sites and on the road if we really expect to make the playoffs.

Submitted via email: Hey guys,

Hope all is well for you. Sorry that it’s been a while, I’ve been busy. Baseball has had a rough start and basketball seemed to stumble on its way across the finish line. Softball has been impressive though, so that’s a good situation.

I tend to bury my head in the sand regarding other things going on in Atlanta sports, but since we’re in a bit of a lull for GT news right now, what other sports news in the Atlanta area should I be aware of? Y’all have a good one.

The City of Raleigh

Logan: I guess the Falcons want to win some more games since they signed Kirk Cousins. Braves are looking pretty good in spring training. That’s about the extent of my knowledge on Atlanta sports.

Ben: Yeah, Logan took mine. I was also gonna mention Kirk Cousins. I don’t follow the NFL enough to really know if that’s a good or a bad move, but any contract that has an AAV of over $40 million is going to have me looking with a suspicious eye. The Falcoholic did a breakdown of the contract that makes me less critical of it.

The Jackets sweep once again, extending their win streak to 15 straight games.

DAIL STADIUM – Riding high from a 12-game win streak, the Jackets traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina to take on the NC State Wolfpack for their first ACC road series of the season. The Tech team put on a show, sweeping the series, and extending the win streak to 15 games. This puts Tech at 18-7 on the year and 6-0 in the ACC. This start ties the program record for the best start in ACC play, going 6-0 for the first time since the 2002 season. This was also the first ACC series sweep since 2018, and the longest winning streak since 2007 when the Jackets set the program record at 19 straight wins.

The momentum for this weekend was kicked off on Wednesday evening, as the Jackets took on Jacksonville State at home and won 8-6. They packed their bags and headed to NC State with high expectations. The Wolfpack was one of the weaker teams in the conference last year and came into this matchup with a 1-2 conference record after losing their ACC opener at Clemson.

The weather on Saturday did not look promising, so the Saturday game was moved to a doubleheader on Friday. This called for a long day, as the first matchup went into 11 innings.

Game One was a brawl and a defensive one at that. GT came out on top 4-1, and carried that boost over to game two, winning 8-1.

The first pitch was thrown by Sophia Voyles at around 4 pm on Friday, and she denied almost every hitter she saw at the plate. She did not allow a runner on base until the fourth inning with a walk. She had a no-hitter until the seventh inning when State hit a home run and finally got something going.

It wasn’t just NC State that was struggling on offense, as the game remained in a 0-0 stalemate until Tiffany Domingue hit a double and then scored off an NC State error. NC State hit a homer in the next inning, and the game was taken into extra innings while tied at 1. The offense came in clutch at the end, with Paige Vukadinovich driving in Emma Minghini and several other Jackets rounding the bases from getting walked. Sara Beth Allen got the final walk, which took Vukadinovich home for a final score of 4-1.

After this long game, the Jackets were only just getting started! The first several at-bats were a huge success. Ella Edgmon began the inning with a walk, then stole second and made her way to third. Mallorie Black drove Edgmon home with a single into the outfield to put Tech up 1-0. Blake Neleman took the mound for the Jackets and struck out the final two batters, leaving a runner on third to maintain the early lead. The second inning was slow for both teams, then in the fourth, the offense came alive again. Up 3-1, once again, there were several walks, a Jin Sileo bunt, and Edgmon getting hit by a pitch that left the bases loaded. Mallorie Black stepped up to the plate and got down to business, blasting a pitch over the wall for the Yellow Jacket grand slam. This put the score at 7-1. Thanks, to Neleman’s pitching the score remained the same, and the offense added another run to their total in the top of the sixth inning. Dennis took over for Neleman and did her job, not allowing any runs to secure the second victory of the day, 8-1.

After getting a free Saturday to rest, the win streak was on the line on Sunday for the final game of the series. This was no problem for Tech, as the game ended shortly thanks to a run-rule win. To no one’s surprise, Ella Edgmon got things started early and showed off the jets, getting the first run of the game by scoring from first after a Mallorie Black double. The Wolfpack made Tech sweat for a minute, hitting a two-run homer to take the lead after the first inning. GT answered in almost no time, having a wild second inning and getting 4 runs to reclaim the lead at 5-2. Sophia Voyles led off on the mound and kept NC State off the board in the bottom of the second, sending the Georgia Tech offense back to the plate. They didn’t do too much in the third, but one would like to think they were just preparing for an elite fourth inning. Chandler Dennis took over for Voyles in the bottom of the third, and immediately snagged her very first pitch from the NC State hitter. After this, she never allowed a runner to get into scoring position, and the game got ugly for the Wolfpack from there.

Remember that fourth inning I mentioned? Tech accumulated five runs to take a 10-2 lead, ultimately ending the game. Vukadinovich started with a single, and Jin Sileo came in after with a single of her own. Edgmon loaded the bases, coming back from a 0-2 start to get the walk. Black had a nice line drive to score two runners, and shortly after the bases were loaded again. The rest of the lineup completed this inning with three more runs, which gave Tech the 10-2 lead. That was the end of that story, as Dennis helped the offense and ended the game in the bottom of the fifth.

Some other key statistics to take a look at:

The HR total now stands at 48, still the most among Power 5 teams. 48 was the total number of home runs Tech had last season, meaning that GT has tied the HR output while playing less than half of the games. The offensive production has been exceptional this year, and hopefully, it will keep up as we get deeper into conference play.

Tech has come from behind in 11 of their 18 wins, and 5 of these have ended in a run-rule victory.

Senior Ella Edgmon now has a hit in 12 straight games, which is the longest hitting streak for a Tech player since 2014.

Mallorie Black has made it to base for 22 straight games, which is tied for the longest on-base streak for GT since 2018. She also has 32 RBIs this season, a career-best.

Madison Dobbins has the most RBIs in the ACC with 34.

Softball America released its March position rankings for this year, and several Jackets made this list.

Sara Beth Allen: #1 utility player in the nation

Madison Dobbins: #10 outfielder in the nation

Tiffany Domingue: #10 second baseman in the nation

Mallorie Black: #2 third baseman in the nation

Softball America also released its newest rankings this morning, and Georgia Tech softball squeaked into their top-25 with the #25 ranking. It’s great to see this team getting the recognition they deserve after having a thrilling start to the 2024 season.

Tech takes on in-state rival Georgia in Athens on Wednesday at 6:00 pm. This would be a massive upset, and if everything comes together the Jackets might just have what it takes to get it done. THWg!

tyler_pifer92: MBB has won 4 of their last 5. What has been the biggest difference that has led to the late season renaissance?

Rob: To me, the team just seems to be playing a lot harder and seems more focused and where I see this translating the most is on the defensive side. Comparing the last 5 games (4-1 record) to the previous 14 games (2-12), we can see that the scoring has not really changed much. Our points per games is marginally up from 70.1 ppg to 71.4 ppg, our FG% is nearly identical, and our turnovers per game are actually up slightly. However, when you look at the defensive side of the court, opponent scoring is down from 79.1 ppg to 72.4 ppg. Another sign of making the hustle plays? Rebounds per game are up from 31.2 per game to 39.8 per game and opponent rebounds per game are down from 34.4 per game to 27.2 per game. In other words, Tech has gone from getting outrebounded by opponents by about 3 rebounds per game to outrebounding opponents by about 13 points per game. That’s an absolutely massive change.

tyler_pifer92: What is Danny Hall’s Legacy when it’s all said and done?

Ben: I think it will depend on how closely you followed Georgia Tech baseball during his tenure. The general public will probably remember him fondly, as someone who kept GT relatively competitive throughout his entire tenure. I’m too lazy to look this up right now, but I’m also pretty sure he’s the winningest coach in GT Baseball history. On that alone, the general public will view him favorably. However, if you follow the team more closely, I think there will always be a lingering sense of what could have been better about his tenure.

Partywaggin: Are we the only ones that care about combined HR’s since we’re in 1st place?

Jack: It’s a cool stat! Not often in the mix of 400+ softball + baseball teams do you get the same school in the top 10 of both. We’re going to push it because it’s a rare thing where we can point to multiple teams at the Institute thriving within a single fact producing at high levels. Beyond that, the teams see this stuff. It’s (hopefully) informative and uplifting.

chilidogringsFO: Has MBB hit a true turning point? What do you expect in the ACC tournament?

Jack: I’m about 60% sure they have. I imagine we wouldn’t be thinking about this question if Ndongo’s shot doesn’t go in at Wake, but that game was good enough regardless of that one shot to merit this question.

I want to reiterate the working theory I have that this team is playing like the 2021-2022 Boston Celtics, Ime Udoka’s first year coaching the team where Damon was on the staff. It took a really long time for them to adjust to the coaching style but also to the detox Udoka pressed hard on them to play fully unselfish basketball. He was as hard on them as just about any coach in the NBA will dare to be, and it built an immensely strong base for that team we’ve seen play out over the last three seasons. There’s similarities between Damon and Ime here, and they just might be finding a way to turn the corner now.

Rob: I touched on this slightly in the previous question, but this team seems to be playing with more energy and focus recently and I do think we have hit a turning point. It’s hard to say we are going to go on some crazy run in the ACC tournament, but we have definitely seen that this team can compete with anyone in the conference any given night.

Jellopacket98: GT baseball team should really be 7-4 after getting swept by that other team. How concerned are you that our season is going to end after the ACC tournament yet again?

Ben: It feels like a rinse and repeat of most seasons. Hitting is strong, pitching is meh, and that’s not enough. I won’t be surprised to see us not make it past the ACC tournament this year.

rdmjr: can someone explain to me how Wake Forest shot 20 free thows to Tech’s 2? Is it simply referees favoring the home team or was Wake not playing defense?

Ben: I wasn’t able to watch the game, so I don’t know for sure. I’m more inclined to think it had to do with the players playing instead of the refs.

One big Duke run and that about did it for Tech

The regular season ends for #10-seed Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball today, losing to #7-seed Duke Blue Devils in the second round of the ACC Tournament 70-58. Duke moves on to face #2-seed NC State in the quarterfinals.

While Duke had the best defense in the ACC coming into the tournament, they beat Tech in multiple ways offensively. The first half was a lot of three point shooting around Tech’s 2-3 zone (5-11 3PT) and using their floor spacing to get a lot of people on the scoresheet. Seven different Blue Devils scored in the first half on 52% shooting to Tech’s 38%.

Tech had serious mismatch issues in the paint in the second half against Kennedy Brown and Camilla Emsbo, both with a size advantage over Kayla Blackshear, who reached four fouls with 13 minutes left in the game trying to defend them. All eight of Duke’s third quarter field goals came in the paint, six of them between Brown and Emsbo.

That said, Tonie Morgan again had a very solid game, finishing with 19 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists (and five turnovers) to lead or co-lead the game in those categories. If there’s one thing to be hopeful about this team, it’s that Tonie is getting better and carrying a team on her back in late-season and playoff type games when pace slows down. If the matchup is right, she’s going to find a shot or get herself to the free thow line, like she did tonight going 10-15 from the line.

Tech did come in with a rest disadvantage having played yesterday, and it showed in the top speed Duke was able to play at over Tech. While the first quarter played stagnant, once Duke when on runs, it was largely from better effort and focus. Tech’s 10 missed free throws also were a big blemish on the scorecard.

1st Quarter

Offense was hard to come by for both teams early with Duke committing three turnovers in the first five minutes. Tech’s first initial buckets came from second chance opportunities but generally had very few spots to exploit Duke’s defense. Duke’s defensive pressure turned into four quick points on three straight transition opportunities, giving them a 12-8 lead and prompting Nell Fortner’s first timeout with 2:06 left. Nothing positive came from that timeout, as Tech finished the quarter without another bucket, their scoreless streak lasting 4:34 while Duke closed on an 11-0 run.

2nd Quarter (17-8 Duke)

The shots finally started falling in the 2nd, scoring eight straight with threes from Kara Dunn and Tonie Morgan, prompting Duke’s first timeout only up 17-16. Tech tied it at 20-20 with a Kayla stepback jumper before Ashlon Jackson put up two threes and was part of a steal-n-score for an 8-0 Duke run to go up 28-20.

That run grew to 15-1 during which Tech committed five turnovers and Duke pretty much was getting any shot they wanted. Tech’s zone defense allowed plenty of open threes, Jackson hitting three just in the quarter. Thankfully, because of the 8-0 run to start the quarter, Tech somehow only finished -3 despite getting overmatched for the majority of teh quarter.

3rd Quarter (38-26 Duke)

Kennedy Brown led a charge of inside scoring for Duke to keep Tech at around a 10 point gap to start the second half. Tonie Morgan essentially was the offense, scoring seven of Tech’s first 10 points, sinking five free throws. After Brown, Camilla Emsbo took over in the paint and kept Duke well ahead by the end of the quarter, scoring six straight and putting Kayla Blackshear at four fouls with 13 minutes left in the game. All eight of Duke’s made field goals came in the paint.

4th Quarter (56-43 Duke)

Tech changed their defense to a full court pressure, which helped shrink the lead to single digits about halfway through the quarter. That lasted all but a few seconds when Duke put in a couple quick buckets, all but sealing the deal about three minutes before the final buzzer.

To be seen. There’s a shot Tech gets invited to the brand new 32-team WBIT tournament after everything plays its way through the conference tournaments. If so, there’s a chance Tech would host games on campus as that tournament does not go neutral site until the semifinals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. If they get some extra games in, I would not be surprised to see them win at least a couple games considering they’ve played a more consistent level in their last few games despite losing most of them.

Tonie Morgan’s made 10 free throws for the 2nd time this season | GTAA on Twitter

Tonie Morgan’s 8th double-double huge in tight game

In the second game of the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament, the #10-seed Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets took down the #15-seed Pitt Panthers 73-60, advancing to the second round and will face Duke on Thursday (tomorrow). The win guarantees Tech will finish above .500 no matter what happens in the rest of the ACC Tournament or in a potential WNIT appearance. The 13-point win was Tech’s largest margin of victory since their 15-point win over Boston College on January 21.

The bulk of the game was a very close contest, similar to Tech’s last game against Miami. There were 17 lead changes and six ties, Tech leading for 24 minutes to Pitt’s 10. Pitt never had more than a three point lead in the third quarter while Tech until late in the 4th didn’t have more than an eight point lead.

Tonie Morgan recorded her 8th double-double of the season, scoring 24 points with 11 rebounds along with four rebounds, leading all players in those categories. In these recnet games where Tech has needed a dominant player to get through games, Morgan is doing just that.

Kara Dunn followed with 14 points, 10 coming critically in the second half when Tech struggled shooting at 33%, including just 15% in the third quarter.

Pitt played a high energy zone defense all game, trying to create traps all over the floor. It did a good job wearing down Tech, forcing plenty of outside shots and not many easy looks under the basket. Tech had 26 three point attempts, only making six at 23%, but hit a critical one with under two minutes to go by Rusne Augustinaite that put the Jackets up six points.

Morgan followed that up with a three point play to put Tech up nine with 1:06 left, finally breaking away from Pitt with not enough time for the Panthers to go on a run. Tech’s 25 fourth quarter points marked the only quarter either team put up 20 or more.

Tech next plays #7-seed Duke, who earlier this season beat Tech by 38 on January 14, the Jackets’ worst loss of the season which came after a 7-1 stretch. Fortner’s team has done better with their effort over the course of 40 minutes in the last couple games, but tomorrow will show if they can maintain that in their first instance of a game in back-to-back days since December when they lost to Creighton and beat New Mexico over Thanksgiving.

1st Quarter

Despite eight points from Tonie Morgan in the first, Tech spent the whole quarter trying to break through Pitt’s zone, often having to pass around the perimeter but still found ways to get consistent paint points with 14 when getting good movement from Blackshear, Dunn, and Morgan. Only the last two buckets Tech hit were outside (Augustinaite three and Morgan jumper). Pitt’s full court press forced two Tech turnovers, turning into four points for Pitt during a 7-0 run for the Panthers which put them up 14-12. Augustinatie’s five points late levelled off Pitt before Tonie put in a high-arcing jumper for the period lead.

2nd Quarter (19-18 GT)

The second was a mirror image of the first with Tech growing a gap from a 7-0 run ending with an Augustinaite three, and then growing the lead to six at 31-25 after Sydney Johnson hit a triple of her own. And like the first, Pitt went on a late run, this one powered by Bella Perkins who single handedly went on a 7-0 run to pull within one at 33-32 Tech with under a minute to go. Of all people to shoot Tech’s next three-point basket, Aixa Wone Aranaz, who had three total three point attempts all season, hit a last second triple from above the key after Morgan rebounded her own miss jumping out of bounds with only a few seconds left on the shot clock. Morgan then got to the line to reach double-digits before halftime.

3rd Quarter (38-32 GT)

Pitt came out firing after the break with four points from Lianu King and Malcolm’s third three of the game for a 7-0 to take a 39-38 lead, the 10th lead change of the game, prompting Fortner to call timeout. Morgan scored a jumper to retake the leak out of the timeout before a couple minute scoreless stretch for both teams. D’Asia Thomas-Harris entered the game here and cost Tech on three straight possessions, missing a putback opportunity, then committing an avoidable shooting foul in transition, then wasn’t able to box out well enough to receive a pass in the paint, creating Tech’s 8th turnover.

Kara Dunn then started getting into the mix after a quiet game up to this point, scoring six straight to put Tech ahead 47-44 and forcing a Pitt timeout. The Panthers got some free points from two Augustinaite turnovers, but a Dunn free throw at the end of the quarter kept Tech’s lead after an abysmal 15% shooting quarter where the Jackets lacked intensity on both sides of the floor.

4th Quarter (48-47 GT)

That intensity stayed lacking to start the fourth with Sydney Johnson getting all to easily stripped. From there, Tech did really well to get to the free throw line (13 attempts) repeatedly and got plenty of second chance opportunities from three Kara Dunn offensive rebounds, adding to her extremely productive second half. Bella Perkins hit a three to make it 60-58 with under three minutes to go before Tonie hit a free throw and Augustinaite nailed a corner three to strech Tech’s lead to six, providing the necessary gap to finish off the win and head to the second round.

It’s the west and then everyone else

Welcome to part 10 of 30 of my Ramblin’ to Paris series.

For those that read last week’s piece (linked above), you’ll remember that the current iteration of the Pac-12 and Big 10 were by far had more Olympic medals won by their alumni than any other conference. The ACC is far, far behind in 6th of D1 conferences with only 217 medals. North Carolina has a quarter of those with 54.

This week, I wanted to zoom in at the school level of the Olympic medal count. Georgia Tech only has 10 to their name so far, the same as Missouri and UC Davis, but are far enough down the list you’d get bored scrolling. If Tech were a participating country, they’d have the same number of medals as Puerto Rico, Uruguay, Liechtenstein, and Pakistan, who also are a long scroll down the all-time medal table.

Starting with the top 10 schools through the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, if you know your Olympic sports, these names will come as no surprise whatsoever:

1: USC - 337

2: Stanford - 328

3: UCLA - 286

4: Cal - 239

T5: Texas - 166

T5: Michigan - 166

7: Florida - 160

8: Ohio State - 122 (I believe this number is a tad higher after Beijing 2022)

9: Yale - 113

10: Harvard - 112

Indiana is the only other school with over 100 medals won at 103, next on this list. With the exception of Ice Hockey, very few American colleges end up having athletes in the Winter Olympics, so I have not gone digging for the added medals there. Odds are, some northern/midwest schools added by having players on the American hockey teams.

Stanford made a tiny gain on USC during the Tokyo games, winning 26 medals to USC’s 21.

Looking at the top four, they’re all California schools, all with good non-revenue sports programs, particularly in swimming where lots of medals are always up for grabs. Their 1,190 combined medals would be the third most if these schools merged together to form a California team. Add in CSU Long Beach, UC Irvine, and San Jose State, their state total grows to 1,299, which would be second all time behind the U.S.

Of course, lots of those California medals were won by Americans, so theoretically the U.S. medal count would decrease significantly if in fact a California team actually existed. In 2014, Business Insider counted gold medals by state residence, and California’s 122 at the time doubled the next best, New York at 61, so California is producing lots of their own athletes while getting plenty from out of state as well.

Looking further down the school list, the states do start to diversify with an Ivy slant. Schools 11-20 are: Indiana (103), Washington (89), Arizona (84), Georgia (81), Minnesota (79), Penn (76), Princeton (73), Tennessee (73), and Auburn (66).

26 schools have over 50 Olympic medals so far. At 51st is CSU Long Beach with 47, the most of any non-Ivy/Power 5 school. Below them, it’s a large grab bag of the rest of the Power 5 schools.

Oddly enough, MIT (otherwise known as GT-Boston according to my boss), has more medals than Tech with 12. Does that make me irrationally angry because it’s MIT and years and years of sports for me pain have originiated in the Boston area? Yes. We need to beat them in this endeavor, for my own sanity.

I’ll be curious if one of the 11-15th ranked teams get past Yale and Harvard in the next few Olympics. Lots of those Ivy league medals came in earlier Olympics when the Ivy League was much more dominant athletically. Indiana recently picked up a few medals from American breaststroker Lilly King, but she’s nearing the end of her career.

The rest of the list past 20 steadily has colleges ranging from the 10s to 50s in medals won. The last surprise to me is who was the Power 5 team at the bottom of the list: Virginia Tech. Their athletes have won a total of two Olympic medals, both bronze. Grenada has more medals than them somehow (it’s three, but still).

The last fun nugget is that the top 13 teams in the list all have golds as the medal they’ve won the most. Minnesota at 14th has 32 silvers and 26 golds. So, our top schools not only get on podiums, they are winning more often than not.
