One of the first things I always think about when I read the name Vad Lee is Wes Durham's 2004 call of (then freshman) Calvin Johnson's game-winning catch at Clemson. Johnson came down with the ball on a well-defended pass, and Durham exclaimed "The Legend of Calvin Johnson is born!" I feel like there's going to be a moment at some point this season when the legend of Vad Lee will be born. Down 10 with around 5 minutes left, Vad's going to lead the team to a pair of scores, taking it in himself for the game-winner with 10 seconds left. I can hear it now...
"Lee, gonna keep it to the right side. Breaks a tackle!! TOUCHDOWNNN GEORGIA TECH!!!! THE JACKETS TAKE THE LEAD WITH 7 SECONDS TO GO, AND THE LEGEND OF VAD LEE IS BORN RIGHT BEFORE OUR EYES!!"
Vad just strikes me as a natural leader. He seems like a kid who his teammates want to play for. He's the guy who isn't afraid to put the team on his back in a crunch -- the guy who stands up for his teammates, fights for them, and takes the blame when things go wrong rather than dispersing it. Not only does he have great intangibles, but his physical abilities are incredible as well. He's extremely fast, his arm is accurate and strong, and he's a physical runner who's aware of the value in his size. His passing ability is something we haven't seen at Georgia Tech since Taylor Bennett, and possibly George Godsey. His abilities will provide balance that the offense has been unable to achieve to date under Paul Johnson, and could unleash the offense to produce in ways that we haven't seen in the past few years. Considering the fact that the offense has been extremely productive even without that balance, we may see Georgia Tech turn into an offensive powerhouse this fall.
I hope all of our fans plan on getting behind Vad "The Impaler" Lee as he leads our offense and our team this fall. The rest of the players sure do.
Are Lee's abilities being overestimated here, or do you see him truly bringing more to the team than any QB has in the previous few years?
